Yes, an automatic tattooing device would repeatedly puncture your skin. That is not sensational wording: conventional tattoo machines already drive needles into the skin over and over to place pigment in the dermis. The robotic version adds computer vision, programmed movement and depth control. Those features may improve repeatability, but the available evidence does not establish that a fully autonomous tattoo robot is safe for unsupervised consumer use.
What the device actually is
This is a robotically controlled tattoo system, not a painless printer and not a new type of ink. Patent descriptions combine a camera-based target-site analyzer with a tattoo needle, controller and mechanical actuators. The proposed system can inspect a stencil, identify the skin’s position and curvature, account for deformation, choose puncture points and set needle depth before depositing ink as controlled dots.
In practical terms, it automates the movement and timing of a tattoo needle. A conventional artist-operated machine remains the underlying mechanism.

Why “stab repeatedly” is mechanically accurate
An electric tattoo machine creates a puncture wound each time it injects a small amount of ink. Its needle oscillates rapidly, entering and leaving the skin while the artist guides the handpiece. Infection-control manuals warn that these punctures can transmit infection or disease if equipment, surfaces or technique are not handled correctly.

A robot does not change that biological fact. It may make the punctures more precisely, but each penetration still creates an open route into the skin and still requires sterile procedures, appropriate single-use components and trained oversight.
How a robotic tattoo session is supposed to work
- Capture the site. Cameras image the skin and the stencil or reference marks.
- Map the surface. Software analyzes position, curvature, stretching and other visible deformation.
- Plan the punctures. The design is converted into locations, spacing and depth settings.
- Apply the dots. An actuated, oscillating needle assembly moves to each planned point and makes the required punctures.
- Manage the consumables. If ink or needle capacity requires it, the system is recharged or replaced before work continues across the tattoo area.
The patents describe engineering concepts and control methods. They are not a clinical trial, a regulator’s authorization or proof that a machine can safely work without an artist watching and intervening.
What automation could improve
Repeatable geometry
Software can render a design as many small dots and coordinate their spacing, depth and coverage. That may be useful for micro tattoos, dotwork and other patterns where consistent placement matters.

Measured positioning and depth
A vision system can attempt to align the needle with a stencil and apply a programmed depth rather than relying entirely on a person’s hand and eye. In theory, this reduces some forms of drift and variation.
Documented settings
A digital workflow could record the design path and machine settings, making the process more reproducible between sessions. Whether that translates into better healed tattoos or fewer complications has not been established by the evidence available here.
Where the difficult risks remain
Skin is a moving, deformable surface
People breathe, tense muscles and shift position. Skin stretches differently over bone, joints and soft tissue. A camera can map a surface at one moment, but a programmed path still has to cope with movement, changing tension and texture while the needle is operating.

Depth is not a single universal number
Too shallow and pigment may not hold; too deep and the procedure can cause excess trauma, scarring or pigment spread. Skin thickness varies by body area and person. A software setting is therefore a control input, not a guarantee of the correct biological result.

Ink viscosity, cartridge condition, buildup and contact with the skin can alter how much pigment reaches each point. A system that is geometrically precise can still produce an uneven result or require a human correction.
Hygiene and emergency response
Every puncture creates an infection-control obligation. Sterile disposables, surface barriers, hand hygiene, approved cleaning and correct sharps disposal remain essential. The crucial accountability question is who notices a misread stencil, unexpected bleeding, equipment fault or client distress and stops the machine immediately.

Is a robotic tattoo safe?
The careful answer is that safety for a particular supervised system and client cannot be inferred from a patent or demonstration. The sources available for this topic do not provide a peer-reviewed human safety trial or a regulator’s authorization for a fully autonomous consumer tattoo robot.
That does not prove every robotic system is dangerous. It means the marketing claim “the machine controls depth and position” should not be treated as equivalent to “the machine is safe to use without an experienced professional.” Before booking, ask who operates the device, what training and licensing apply, which parts are single-use, how the skin and equipment are prepared, what emergency stop procedure exists and who remains responsible for the result.

Axios reported on October 16, 2023 that Austin-based Blackdot had unveiled a patented automated tattoo machine and opened bookings. The report said artists’ designs were scanned and rendered as many tiny dots, with planned studios in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and Miami. Those locations, booking status and pricing are time-sensitive; verify them directly before making plans.

Blackdot co-founder and CEO Joel Pennington described the appeal this way: “For the cool kids, there’s a less-is-more mentality now.” Axios also reported figures including a Pew estimate that one third of Americans are tattooed, a Forbes projection of a $3.9 billion industry by 2030 and $4.6 million raised by Blackdot at the time of that 2023 report. The retrieved report did not identify the publication years for the Pew and Forbes figures.
What product category is closest?
The honest conventional product term is rotary tattoo machine pen. That is a handheld tool used by tattoo professionals, not an autonomous robot. Disposable tattoo needle cartridges are another relevant category because robotic designs still depend on needle assemblies and infection-control practices.
Neither product should be presented as an invitation for an untrained person to tattoo themselves. A machine that automates motion does not supply the training, sterile workspace, anatomical judgment or emergency response required for professional tattooing.

So, would I let one tattoo me?
I would treat it as a supervised service, not a self-driving appliance. The engineering idea—using cameras and actuators to place controlled dots—could be valuable for repeatable designs. But I would book only after confirming the operator’s qualifications, sterile workflow, single-use components, emergency controls and responsibility for correcting a misread or unexpected skin response. Until independent human safety evidence and clear oversight standards are available, “automatic” should describe the motion system, not imply that the biological risk has been automated away.
