Make a simple invisible-ink message with lemon juice: write on paper, let it dry, then ask an adult to reveal it with a warm iron. The dried writing is difficult to see until heat darkens it. The National Archives’ activity takes around 25 minutes, including drying time.
What you need
- Half a lemon
- Ordinary paper
- A thin paintbrush
- A small bowl
- An iron and ironing board
The paintbrush helps control the writing, and the National Archives notes that using more lemon juice makes the revealed message darker. An adult should cut the lemon and handle the iron.
How to make and reveal lemon-juice ink
- Prepare the juice. Have an adult cut a lemon and squeeze half into a small bowl.
- Write the message. Dip a thin paintbrush into the juice and write on ordinary paper. Avoid soaking the paper.
- Let it dry. Leave the sheet undisturbed for about 15–20 minutes, the drying time given in the National Archives recipe.
- Reveal it with heat. With an adult operating the iron, place the paper on an ironing board and heat it until the writing appears. The Archives estimates 15–30 seconds, then advises letting the paper cool for one minute.
Those are activity timings, not guarantees: results can vary with the paper, amount of juice, and heating conditions. Keep the iron moving and follow its instructions; only an adult should handle it.

Why does lemon juice become visible?
The National Archives gives a simplified explanation: heating breaks down carbon compounds in the lemon juice, releasing carbon that reacts with oxygen in the air and darkens the writing. The National Children’s Museum describes the juice as oxidizing more rapidly and turning brown when heated. These are accessible explanations of the activity rather than a complete account of the chemistry.
Other invisible-ink methods
Try another citrus juice
The National Archives says other citrus fruits can be used and mentions orange juice in connection with letters associated with the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. This supports trying citrus alternatives, but does not mean every juice will reveal identically on every paper. The step-by-step timings above are for lemon juice.

Try milk as an experiment
The National Archives recounts milk’s historical use as invisible ink, and the Royal Society of Chemistry lists milk among possible heat-developed inks. It is a reasonable alternative to experiment with, but the lemon recipe’s instructions and timings should not be assumed to apply exactly.
Turmeric and baking soda use a different reveal
Turmeric ink is an indicator activity, not a heat-based version of the lemon method. The American Chemical Society explains that turmeric’s curcumin remains yellow-gold in acidic or neutral solutions and turns red-orange in a base. Its activity uses a turmeric mixture and a base-containing window cleaner to reveal the writing; a separate 2025 ACS activity uses baking soda and turmeric. This method leaves a color change and requires its own materials and directions. The ACS calls for safety goggles in its disappearing-ink activity and describes window cleaner containing ammonia. Do not treat spraying cleaner as an unsupervised children’s activity: follow the activity directions and product label with adult or teacher supervision.

Safety and age guidance
The hot iron is the main hazard in the lemon-juice activity, and the National Archives specifically assigns cutting the lemon and ironing to an adult. The IET presents its lemon-juice activity for home or school and gives ages 7–11 as its intended range; that is guidance for that resource, not a universal age rating or safety certification. Other inks and reveal agents may have different hazards, so use the safety directions for the exact activity rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

It also discusses archival records and scientific imaging used to read orange-juice letters. A modern lemon-and-iron activity is a simple demonstration, not a precise recreation of a historic recipe.
