Yarndex was a historical online yarn reference directory, not a yarn manufacturer or shop. A Make article published on April 7, 2009 described it as a place to look up yarns and find substitutions for knitting and crochet patterns. Make said the directory contained profiles for almost 4,500 yarns at that time. Yarndex is no longer presented as an operating service in the available sources; a later YarnPixel retrospective says it disappeared, but no precise shutdown date or first-party closure notice has been established.

Yarndex was organized as a reference directory for commercial yarns. Its documented purpose was helping crafters identify a comparable yarn when a pattern’s specified product was unavailable or unsuitable. That makes it different from a yarn brand, retailer, or pattern publisher.
Make’s contemporaneous description, published April 7, 2009, reported almost 4,500 yarn profiles. That is a dated figure from the article, not a current inventory or an independently audited total. The original article is available at Make.

Finding a substitute yarn
The clearest use case was substitution: locating another yarn with broadly comparable characteristics when a pattern yarn could not be found. A useful substitution requires more than a similar color. You normally need to compare weight, fibre content, gauge, meterage or yardage, care instructions, and the fabric the replacement produces.
Looking up yarn attributes
YarnPixel’s retrospective account says Yarndex listings included details such as yarn weight, colour, and fibre content. That account is a later description, not a surviving first-party specification for every historical listing, so the completeness and accuracy of the old records cannot be confirmed.

Did Yarndex shut down?
YarnPixel’s article, “Missing Yarndex? Meet YarnPixel,” says that Yarndex disappeared. The reviewed material does not establish an exact closure date, who operated the directory, or whether a complete archive remains. Treat the disappearance as YarnPixel’s retrospective account rather than a separately verified closure announcement.
There is also no established evidence here about how often Yarndex updated listings, how accurate its catalogue was, whether it had commercial partnerships, or whether all of its historical pages are preserved.

YarnPixel as a possible successor
YarnPixel’s article markets its own service to people looking for Yarndex. It describes a searchable catalogue with filters for brand, product line, weight, fibre type, and recommended needle size, along with image-based colour matching. These are claims made by YarnPixel about its product; the available sources do not provide an independent comparison proving that it is a complete replacement for Yarndex.

For a fair comparison, check the tool’s actual catalogue coverage, the attributes it lets you search, its substitution workflow, how colour matching works, and which platforms are currently supported. The cited sources are insufficient to rank YarnPixel against other services.

How to choose a replacement yarn without Yarndex
- Record the pattern requirements. Note the stated yarn weight, gauge, fibre, yardage or meterage, needle or hook size, and washing instructions.
- Match gauge first. Make a swatch and adjust needle or hook size only as needed; a label category alone does not guarantee the same fabric.
- Compare length, not just skein weight. Calculate the total yardage or meterage required and buy enough of the substitute from one dye lot when possible.
- Check fibre and care. Wool, cotton, acrylic, and blends behave differently in stretch, drape, warmth, felting, and washing.
- Evaluate colour separately. Names such as “red” or “natural” are not standardized. Compare physical samples or reliable photographs and allow for dye-lot variation.
- Swatch and test the finished fabric. A substitute is acceptable only when its gauge, hand, and expected wear suit the pattern.
What Yarndex was not
- It was not documented here as a yarn maker or retailer.
- Its reported 4,500-profile figure does not describe a current catalogue.
- No evidence in the cited material establishes a Yarndex affiliate or partner program.
- The available sources do not identify an operator, exact launch date, exact shutdown date, or preservation status for the full directory.

The primary contemporary reference is Make’s April 7, 2009 article, “Yarndex: The Yarn Directory”.
