What Giga Manga is
Giga Manga is an online experiment created by Google Arts & Culture. Its experiment page is dated March 23, 2022, and credits Artists in Residence Caroline Buttet and Gael Hugo. The project was part of Manga Out of the Box: the story of a Japanese art form, published by Google on March 24, 2022. That exhibit was a collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and 12 cultural institutions across Japan.
This is best understood as an interactive way to explore manga creation and reference art, not as a full illustration package with the controls, file-management features or production workflow of dedicated drawing software.

How to draw a character
- Open the Giga Manga experience in a web browser. The documented interaction is online; the sources do not specify a required browser, operating system or drawing device.
- Sketch the basic lines. The experiment is designed to begin with a few simple marks rather than a finished, carefully inked drawing.
- Add color scribbles. Place splashes of color where you want the character’s main color areas to develop.
- Let the machine-learning model complete the image. Giga Manga predicts how the sketch might develop and generates a manga-style result.
- Refine it with freeform drawing if you want more control. Google describes freeform drawing as an optional way to personalize the creation beyond the guided marks.
- Explore the suggested manga. When the drawing is finished, the tool helps find similar manga in the Google Arts & Culture collection.
What the AI is doing
Google says the model used for this experiment was trained on more than 140,000 high-resolution images. That figure is Google’s 2022 description of the training model, not a claim that every image in the collection was used in the same way or that the system reproduces any particular artist’s work.
Completing the sketch
Google customized a colorization model called Adeleine, created by So Hasegawa, to detect the colored scribbles users add. The system uses those marks, along with the simple line drawing, to suggest a completed character.

Finding related manga
After generation, Google says CLIP and OpenCV, combined with the ANNOY library, help search for the closest match in Google Arts & Culture’s manga collection. The recommendation stage is therefore part of the experience: Giga Manga does not only make an image; it also connects that image to related cultural material.

Do you need a drawing tablet or stylus?
No specific tablet, stylus or Chromebook requirement is established in Google’s description. The experience is presented as a browser-based interaction, so a mouse, trackpad, touchscreen or stylus may serve as the input method available on your device. A stylus can make sketching more comfortable, but it is an optional convenience rather than a documented prerequisite.
What to expect from the result
- It is an interpretation, not a faithful cleanup. The model predicts how your marks might develop, so the output can differ from the exact character you imagined.
- Color placement matters. Google specifically describes Adeleine as detecting the colored scribbles, making those marks part of the generation signal rather than mere decoration.
- Creative control is shared. You establish the initial structure and palette; the model supplies much of the finished visual form.
