Yes. Unplugging an appliance stops its standby electricity use for as long as it is disconnected. The savings are largest when a device draws power continuously, remains unused for long periods, or belongs to a group controlled by a switched power strip. The effect is often small for a low-wattage charger, and unplugging can disable clocks, remote controls, network access, timers or safety functions.
There is no universal ranking of the eight biggest energy hogs. A home’s largest electricity users depend on climate, heating fuel, equipment, household size, settings and usage. The most useful approach is to measure individual devices, then investigate the high-use categories below.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines standby power as the lowest power a device consumes while connected to mains electricity. Some equipment continues drawing power even when its display is dark or its switch appears to be off. The load may keep a clock running, listen for a remote-control signal, maintain a network connection, charge an internal battery or preserve settings.
Disconnecting the plug removes that connection and therefore stops the appliance’s standby draw. A switched power strip does the same for several compatible electronics at once. DOE’s renter guidance recommends unplugging devices that are not needed or using a switched strip, while warning that some equipment needs continuous power for useful functions.

Standby is only one part of energy use. A television, computer, cooking appliance or pump can consume substantially more while operating than while waiting in standby. A device that uses 2 watts for 20 hours each day may matter less than a heater that uses thousands of watts for a shorter period.
When unplugging is worth doing
Good candidates
- Entertainment systems, speakers and gaming equipment that sit unused for long periods.
- Desktop accessories, printers and monitors that are not needed overnight or during vacations.
- Chargers and small appliances that remain plugged in without a purpose.
- Guest-room or seasonal equipment that can remain disconnected between uses.
- Groups of electronics that can safely be switched off together with one power strip.
Keep these functions powered when you need them
- Clocks, alarms, timers and programmed cooking or heating controls.
- Networking equipment that must provide an uninterrupted connection.
- Medical, safety or security equipment that is designed to run continuously.
- Refrigeration and freezing equipment, which must remain powered to preserve food.
- Any device whose manufacturer requires continuous power or whose settings would be lost after disconnection.
Instead of adopting a blanket “unplug everything” rule, decide device by device. Convenience, reset time and the purpose of the standby function can outweigh a very small electricity reduction.

A plug-in electricity usage monitor can show the power drawn by an individual cord-and-plug appliance. Measurement is more reliable than assuming every charger or television wastes a meaningful amount.
- Identify the load. Record the appliance, its operating mode and whether other equipment is connected through it.
- Connect the monitor. Plug the monitor into the wall outlet, then plug the appliance into the monitor. Follow the monitor’s safety and load-rating instructions.
- Check standby. Put the appliance in the normal “off” or sleep state and note the watts. If the reading is stable, a direct reading is useful.
- Measure operation. Run the appliance in a representative mode and record its operating watts. A brief peak may not represent normal use.
- Measure fluctuating loads over time. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program says changing consumption should be measured for a period, then averaged by dividing total energy by the measurement period. A refrigerator, computer or heat pump may cycle, so an instant reading can mislead.
- Record hours. Estimate how many hours the appliance operates and how many hours it remains in standby each day or week.
For a simple estimate, convert power to energy with kilowatt-hours = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by your local electricity rate to estimate cost. Rates, taxes and time-of-use schedules differ, so a calculation using a local bill is more meaningful than a national average.

Illustrative standby calculation
Suppose a device measured at 3 watts remains in standby for 20 hours each day. Its annual standby energy would be approximately 21.9 kilowatt-hours: 3 × (20 × 365) ÷ 1,000. At a hypothetical rate of $0.18 per kilowatt-hour, that would be about $3.94 per year. This is a worked example, not a typical or guaranteed saving; use your measured wattage and actual rate.
The eight high-use categories to investigate first
The categories below are practical candidates, not a universal ranking. DOE’s Building Technologies Office groups residential electricity use into areas such as refrigeration, laundry, cooking and dishwashing, while noting that miscellaneous electric loads are growing. A DOE-hosted 2019 residential-efficiency presentation illustrated a different pattern, with water heating, clothes drying, pool pumps and refrigerator/freezers among the longest plotted categories, followed by items such as desktop computers, televisions and microwaves. That historical chart demonstrates why high-use equipment can be more important than small standby loads; it is not a current nationwide ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Category | Why it can be a major user | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Space heating | Electric resistance heaters, heat pumps and other systems can run for long periods in cold weather. | Heating fuel, thermostat settings, outdoor temperature, equipment efficiency and run time. |
| Air conditioning | Cooling equipment cycles for many hours during hot weather and may serve the entire home. | Climate, set point, filter condition, duct losses, system size and seasonal operation. |
| Water heating | Water heaters repeatedly supply showers, laundry, dishwashing and taps; electric models also maintain temperature between uses. | Fuel type, tank or on-demand design, temperature setting, household demand and standby losses. |
| Clothes drying | Dryers use high power during each cycle, and frequent or long loads add up quickly. | Cycle length, load size, moisture extraction before drying and frequency of use. |
| Refrigeration and freezing | Refrigerators and freezers operate all day, cycling compressors and fans to hold temperature. | Age, condition of door seals, ambient temperature, settings and the number of units. |
| Pool pumping, where applicable | Pumps can run for scheduled hours every day and use substantial motor power. | Pump size, schedule, filtration needs, pool equipment and seasonal operation. |
| Cooking | Ovens, ranges, countertop appliances and ventilation equipment can draw high power during use. | Appliance type, preheating, cooking duration, batch size and whether several devices run together. |
| Laundry and dishwashing | Washers, dishwashers and their heating elements consume energy across repeated cycles. | Cycle and temperature selection, load frequency, water-heating source and drying options. |
Not every home has all eight categories, and the order changes with equipment and behavior. A gas-heated home may have a different electricity profile from an all-electric home; a pool owner’s pump may outrank a refrigerator, while an apartment without a dryer will not have that load.
Standby watts versus operating watts
Compare appliances on five axes rather than on the word “standby” alone:

- Measured standby and operating watts: capture both states with a monitor.
- Hours: include operating time, standby time and cycling rather than relying on nameplate power alone.
- Continuous-function requirement: identify what a shutdown would disable.
- Capacity and household use: a larger appliance or a heavily used appliance may consume more even if its rated efficiency is better.
- Local electricity price: convert measured energy into a cost using the rate on your bill.
This framework also prevents a common mistake: treating a high-wattage appliance that runs briefly as automatically more expensive than a low-wattage appliance that operates continuously. Energy is power multiplied by time.
Using a switched power strip safely
A switched strip is convenient for a desk, entertainment center or other group whose equipment can be disconnected together. Turn the strip off when the group is not needed, or unplug the strip for a longer absence. Label the switch if several people use the setup.
Do not place equipment on the strip if it must remain powered, if shutting it down could interrupt a required service, or if the combined load exceeds the strip’s rating. Avoid using a strip as a substitute for a properly installed circuit, and follow the strip and appliance manufacturers’ instructions. For a single appliance, unplugging directly is equally effective.
Replacing equipment: where efficiency comparisons belong
If an appliance already needs replacement, compare current efficient models rather than buying solely to eliminate standby. DOE consumer information directs shoppers toward ENERGY STAR-qualified products and uses clothes washers as an example of a category where efficiency can reduce energy use. The size of any saving depends on the model, capacity, cycle, household use and local utility rate; one category’s result cannot be applied to every appliance.

For a fair comparison, use comparable capacity and usage assumptions. Check measured or standardized energy information where available, then consider repair history, expected service life and features that may increase run time. Replacing a working device solely for a small standby reduction may take longer to pay back than simply switching it off when unused.

Assuming every “off” device uses the same amount
Standby draw varies by design and mode. Measure the specific appliance instead of applying a blanket wattage to all chargers, televisions or kitchen devices.

Disconnecting equipment that needs continuity
Before switching off, check clocks, timers, remote access, network connections, food preservation, medical needs and security functions.
Calling a historical chart a current ranking
The 2019 DOE presentation is an illustrative chart, not proof that the same eight categories rank identically in every home today. Climate, fuel, household size and equipment change the result.

- List plug-in devices and mark which ones are used daily, occasionally or seasonally.
- Measure standby and representative operating power for the most likely candidates.
- Log cycling appliances for enough time to obtain an average.
- Calculate annual kilowatt-hours from measured power, hours and your local rate.
- Unplug or group suitable low-use electronics on a switched strip.
- Leave continuous functions powered and document any timer or clock resets before switching off.
- Investigate the eight high-use categories, starting with the ones your home actually has.
- When replacement is necessary, compare efficient models at equivalent capacity and use.
Unplugging is a low-cost way to remove standby electricity, but measurement tells you whether the result is worth the inconvenience. In many homes, the largest opportunities come from long-running heating, cooling, water-heating, refrigeration, drying, pumping, cooking and washing loads rather than from a handful of tiny chargers.
