The original Lascaux cave is still closed to the public. You can, however, explore its paintings and galleries in three different ways: take the French Ministry of Culture’s online virtual visit, visit the full-scale Lascaux IV replica in Montignac, France, or book a dedicated virtual-reality experience at the Préhistomuseum in Belgium.
First, the important distinction: the original Lascaux cave is closed
No one can currently tour the original Lascaux cave. It has been closed to the public since 1963 to protect its prehistoric paintings and the cave environment. Public access was restricted because visitors’ breath, heat, humidity, microorganisms, and lighting contributed to conservation problems.
When people say they are “visiting Lascaux,” they may mean one of several different things:
- Lascaux: the original cave, which is inaccessible to the public.
- Lascaux II or Lascaux IV: public reproductions and interpretive attractions.
- The online Lascaux resource: a web-based exploration provided by France’s Ministry of Culture.
- Lascaux Expérience: a separate, paid VR attraction in Belgium.
The official Lascaux FAQ explains the closure and the role of the replicas at lascaux.fr.

The easiest way to tour Lascaux from home
For a free, no-travel option, use the French Ministry of Culture’s Lascaux virtual visit. It is an on-demand online resource—not necessarily a live guided tour and not a promise of a headset-compatible VR simulation.
- Open the Ministry’s Lascaux portal.
- Select the section labeled “Visit Lascaux” or “Lascaux virtual visit,” depending on the current page layout.
- Explore the virtual cave, video material, 3D resources, and explanatory sections about the paintings and archaeology.
- Use a desktop computer or tablet if possible. A larger screen makes cave panels and interactive details easier to examine.
The portal covers more than a simple walk-through. Its subject areas include the cave and paintings, the surrounding environment, Paleolithic or parietal art, the cave’s discovery, archaeological research, conservation, and future perspectives.
If an interactive viewer does not load, try a current desktop browser, temporarily disable an aggressive script or content blocker, or return to the main Lascaux portal. The site’s videos, media pages, and explanatory articles can still provide useful access if a particular feature fails.
Explore the Lascaux 3D model
The Ministry of Culture also presents a Lascaux 3D model through the eCorpus platform. This is especially useful if you want to understand the cave’s layout rather than simply look at individual images.

According to the Ministry’s current information, Lascaux is dated to approximately 21,000 BC, at the transition between the Upper Solutrean and Badegoulian periods. The same page describes approximately 680 paintings and 1,500 engravings, with the accessible gallery network measuring 235 meters in total.
Those figures should be understood as the Ministry’s published descriptions; archaeological dates and artwork inventories can vary according to dating methods and classification. The 3D model is best treated as an analytical companion to the virtual visit, not as proof that you are physically entering the original cave.

Lascaux IV, officially the International Centre for Cave Art, is in Montignac-Lascaux in Dordogne, France. It contains a full-scale replica of the accessible original cave, along with a large interpretive complex. It is not the original Lascaux cave.
The center is more than a replica corridor or a projection show. The official visitor route includes:

Which Lascaux IV format should you choose?
- Guided visit: best for first-time visitors who want interpretation about the paintings, techniques, meaning, and conservation. The official site lists morning and afternoon guided visits.
- Self-guided or audioguide visit: best if your group wants to move at different speeds or spend longer with selected panels. The ticketing information says this option is available at lunchtime, subject to the published schedule.
- Storytelling visit: a family-friendly, narrative format suited to children.
- Prestige visit: a smaller, more atmospheric option for adults or special occasions, at a higher price.
Children under five may enter free, but check the current ticket and audio-receiver conditions before booking.
The dedicated VR option in Belgium
If you specifically want a headset-based experience rather than a browser visit or physical replica, Lascaux Expérience at the Préhistomuseum in Flémalle, near Liège, Belgium, is the clearly documented option in this guide.
It combines a virtual-reality presentation of Lascaux with an interactive exhibition, interpretation of prehistoric life and Cro-Magnon culture, and archaeologist-led workshops. The retrieved venue page lists a guided tour and exhibition price of €17, but session times and ticket terms should be confirmed directly with the museum.

Which Lascaux experience is right for you?
| Option | Cost signal | Travel | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Culture virtual visit | Public online resource; no admission price listed | None | Remote learners, families, students, and educators | Less sensory than an in-person experience |
| Lascaux 3D | Public online resource | None | Readers interested in the cave’s structure | More analytical and potentially less intuitive to navigate |
| Lascaux IV | From €23 adult in the published 2026 individual rates | Montignac, France | The most complete public replica experience | Timed admission and travel required |
| Lascaux Expérience | €17 listed on the retrieved venue page | Flémalle, Belgium | Visitors specifically seeking dedicated VR | Paid, on-site experience; availability must be checked |
What you are—and are not—seeing
None of these public options gives you unrestricted access to the untouched original paintings. The online resources provide digital representations and context. Lascaux IV recreates the cave at full scale and surrounds it with exhibitions and immersive media. Lascaux Expérience uses VR and interpretation to create a different kind of presence.
That distinction matters. The replicas and digital models exist precisely because conservation requires limiting access to the original. Lascaux IV may be the closest physical visitor experience, but it should still be described as a reproduction—not as the cave that was discovered in 1940.
Bottom line
If you are at home, start with the Ministry of Culture’s virtual Lascaux visit and its related 3D resources. If you are traveling through Dordogne, choose Lascaux IV for the fullest in-person public experience. If you want dedicated VR and will be in Belgium, consider Lascaux Expérience at the Préhistomuseum. In every case, remember: the original Lascaux cave remains closed.
