For most beginners, Wix is the best genuinely free website builder for photographers. It offers a permanent free plan, visual editing, templates, hosting, and enough flexibility for a basic portfolio. Choose Adobe Portfolio instead if you already pay for an eligible Creative Cloud plan, Pixieset if client galleries and sales matter most, or Carrd if a one-page portfolio is enough.
“Free” needs careful qualification. Some services are free forever, some only offer trials, Adobe Portfolio is bundled with eligible Adobe subscriptions, and nearly every platform charges for a custom domain or removal of branding. The best strictly free platform is therefore not automatically the best professional website.

| Builder | Best for | Free status | Main free limitation | Custom domain | Client galleries or selling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Adobe Portfolio | Existing Adobe subscribers | Included with eligible paid Creative Cloud plans | Requires the Adobe subscription; limited business tools | Depends on the associated plan and setup | Not designed for proofing or native selling |
| Pixieset | Client delivery and gallery sales | Free forever with restrictions | 3 GB storage and 15% commission on free-plan sales | Paid upgrade | Strongest option here for galleries, proofing, and sales |
| Carrd | One-page portfolios | Free forever with restrictions | Designed primarily for simple one-page sites | Pro upgrade | Basic forms and links after upgrading |
| Framer | Design-led portfolios | Free forever with restrictions | Framer domain, 1 GB bandwidth, and commercial-use qualification | Basic paid plan | Not a photography-specific delivery platform |
| Webflow | Advanced visual control | Free forever with restrictions | Webflow.io domain, two static pages, 1 GB bandwidth | Paid site plan | Limited free CMS and forms; no native proofing workflow |

| Behance | Discovery and networking | Free forever | Not a branded standalone website | No personal site control | Project presentation, not private proofing |
| Canva Websites | Quick visual landing pages | Free publishing with restrictions | Limited site architecture and photography workflow | May require a paid Canva plan | External links rather than specialized selling |

How these platforms were judged
The ranking weighs permanent free availability, portfolio presentation, image and storage limits, branding and domain restrictions, galleries and proofing, selling tools, ease of use, and the likely upgrade path. A general website builder is not treated as equivalent to a client-gallery service, and a portfolio network is not treated as equivalent to a standalone business website.
For a photography site, image workflow matters more than template count. Check compression, upload limits, full-screen viewing, mobile loading, download controls, and whether the service stores web copies or original files. Keep RAW files and full-resolution originals separately: a website is not an archival backup.
1. Wix — best overall free website builder
Free-plan truth: Free forever, with Wix hosting, a drag-and-drop editor, no-code tools, and templates. See the official Wix plans page for current regional pricing and limits.
Wix is the strongest default choice when you want a conventional portfolio with galleries, an About page, services, contact information, social links, and room to expand. Its editor gives beginners more visual control than most free alternatives.
Main limitations: The free version uses a Wix subdomain and displays Wix branding. Connecting a custom domain and removing Wix branding require a Premium plan. Storage, marketing, commerce, and other business features are also restricted.
Best for: Students, hobbyists, portrait photographers, wedding photographers, and freelancers launching a first portfolio.
Poor fit: Large client galleries, high-volume downloads, or photographers who need an unbranded commercial site at zero cost.
First upgrade trigger: A custom domain and branding removal are usually more important than additional design features once the site begins generating inquiries.
2. WordPress.com — best for blogging and content growth
Free-plan truth: WordPress.com has a permanent free entry point, but its free-tier details should be confirmed in the account flow because the public pricing page emphasizes paid plans.
WordPress.com is a good choice for photographers who want their portfolio to support a blog, travel journal, behind-the-scenes posts, location guides, or educational content. Its publishing model offers more long-term content potential than a simple landing-page builder.
Main limitations: Expect a WordPress.com subdomain and platform branding on the free tier. Customization is more limited than self-hosted WordPress, and plugins and advanced commerce generally require paid plans.
Do not confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org. The latter is free software, but hosting, domain registration, backups, security, themes, plugins, and maintenance normally cost money.
Best for: Editorial, documentary, travel, and SEO-oriented photographers who plan to publish regularly.
First upgrade trigger: A custom domain, more storage, plugins, or monetization tools.
3. Adobe Portfolio — best if you already pay for Adobe
Free-plan truth: Adobe Portfolio is effectively included with eligible paid Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions; it is not necessarily a free standalone website service. Confirm eligibility on Adobe Portfolio and the Adobe Photography plan page.
For a photographer already paying for Lightroom or Photoshop, Adobe Portfolio is one of the fastest ways to publish a clean, image-focused site. Setup is simple and the workflow fits photographers already organizing work in Adobe’s ecosystem.

- High-Quality Imaging: The Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR Camera features a 24.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor for stunningly detailed photos, even in challenging lighting
- Versatile ISO Range: With an ISO range of 100 to 6400 (expandable to 12800), the Canon EOS Rebel T7 captures clear images in various lighting conditions
- Fast Autofocus System: Equipped with a 9-point AF system and AI Servo AF, the Canon EOS Rebel T7 ensures precise focus for sharp images every time

- User-Friendly Features: The Canon EOS Rebel T7 boasts a 3.0-inch LCD display and Scene Intelligent Auto mode for simplified shooting, making it perfect for beginners
Main limitations: It is not a full business platform. Native client proofing, bookings, print sales, complex SEO, advanced blogging, and broader commerce are weak fits.
Best for: Job-seeking photographers, students, and creatives who already have an eligible Adobe plan.
Poor fit: Anyone who would subscribe to Adobe solely to obtain a website, or photographers needing delivery and sales workflows.
First upgrade trigger: Usually not the website itself; the relevant cost is whether the Adobe subscription is already justified by editing needs.

Free-plan truth: Free forever with 3 GB of photo storage, unlimited galleries, gallery-based selling, online payments, automatic fulfillment, coupons, and gift cards. Free-plan sales carry a 15% commission. Details are listed on Pixieset’s pricing page.
Pixieset solves a different problem from Wix. It is particularly useful for delivering wedding, portrait, and event galleries, collecting favorites or selections, controlling downloads, and beginning to sell prints or digital products through galleries.
“Unlimited galleries” does not mean unlimited hosting. Three gigabytes can be enough for a curated portfolio and smaller client jobs, but hundreds of high-resolution images or downloadable originals can exhaust it quickly.
Main limitations: Storage is tight, the free-plan commission is substantial for regular sales, and custom branding and a custom domain require an upgrade. Website, gallery, store, and studio-management functions may be separate products or bundled depending on the plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest for: Client delivery, proofing, gallery sales, and photographers who need a practical starting point more than broad design control.
First upgrade trigger: More storage, commission-free sales, a custom domain, branding controls, and full-resolution downloads. The supplied snapshot lists Basic at $8 per month billed annually or $10 monthly, but verify current pricing before buying.
5. Carrd — best for a fast one-page portfolio
Free-plan truth: Carrd supports basic free one-page sites. The Pro Standard plan is listed at $19 per year for 10 sites and adds custom domains, branding removal, larger and higher-quality images, slideshows, forms, widgets, analytics, and meta tags.
Carrd is ideal when you need a focused page containing a hero image, selected gallery, short biography, services, contact method, and social links. It is fast to launch and avoids the maintenance burden of a larger CMS.
Recommended Free Tools
Main limitations: It is primarily a one-page tool, not a large portfolio or client-delivery system. Blogging, extensive navigation, large galleries, and stores are poor fits.
Best for: New photographers, freelancers, temporary portfolios, campaign pages, and link-in-bio replacements.
First upgrade trigger: Custom domain, forms, analytics, no branding, and better image presentation.
6. Framer — best for design-forward portfolios
Free-plan truth: Framer lists a $0 plan with a Framer domain, 1 GB bandwidth, and design pages. Its Basic plan is listed at $10 per month and adds a custom domain, two CMS collections, 50 GB bandwidth, and built-in SEO.

A long-lasting rechargeable battery supports extended photo sessions, while the durable build ensures reliable use on adventures or daily shoots. Its lightweight body and comfortable grip make it ideal for travel, family moments, or budding photography careers.
Framer suits art photographers and designers who want animation, unusual layouts, and a modern visual presentation. It is more design-led than photography-specific.
Important commercial warning: Framer describes its Free plan as intended for non-commercial use. Working photographers should review the current terms before using it as a business site.
Main limitations: The free domain and bandwidth limit can become restrictive, and the platform does not replace a client-proofing or gallery-sales service.
First upgrade trigger: Commercial use, a custom domain, higher bandwidth, CMS content, and SEO controls.
7. Webflow — best for advanced visual control
Free-plan truth: Webflow’s free Starter site plan includes a Webflow.io domain, limited CMS, two static pages, 1 GB bandwidth, and 50 form submissions. See Webflow’s pricing page.
Webflow offers unusually deep layout and interaction control for photographers comfortable with design systems. It can support an art-directed portfolio that feels unlike a standard template.
Main limitations: Two static pages is a severe restriction for a real portfolio. The free tier also has a Webflow.io subdomain, limited CMS capacity, and limited production features.
Webflow lists a Freelancer Workspace plan at $16 per month billed yearly, but a Workspace price should not be confused with every cost involved in publishing a production site on a custom domain.
Best for: Designers, art directors, and technically confident photographers.
Poor fit: Beginners, large image libraries, and anyone expecting a generous free plan.
First upgrade trigger: More pages, CMS capacity, custom-domain publishing, SEO controls, collaboration, and production hosting.
8. Google Sites — best for a basic information hub
Free-plan truth: Google Sites can be used without a recurring website-builder payment. Start at Google Sites and confirm custom-domain requirements for your Google account or Workspace arrangement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Google Sites is useful for a biography, service list, contact details, maps, embedded galleries, and links to external delivery services. It has almost no learning curve and works well for students, community photographers, and temporary projects.
Main limitations: Visual presentation, gallery controls, SEO, e-commerce, and private client proofing are limited. It is rarely the right choice for a luxury wedding or commercial brand whose portfolio must feel highly art-directed.
First upgrade trigger: Usually the need for stronger visual branding or a dedicated gallery and sales platform rather than a Google Sites upgrade itself.
9. Behance — best as a free discovery channel
Free-plan truth: Behance is a free public portfolio network at behance.net, not a fully controlled standalone business website.

Behance is valuable for publishing projects and case studies, building creative-community visibility, applying for jobs, networking, and linking back to a main site. It can be especially useful for commercial, editorial, and design-related photography.
Main limitations: You do not control the branded domain, site navigation, or overall business experience. Behance is not designed for private client proofing, direct bookings, or full e-commerce control.
Best use: Treat it as a supplementary presence, not your only professional web address.
First upgrade trigger: The need for a personal domain, a controlled contact funnel, private galleries, or a distinctive brand environment.
10. Canva Websites — best for a quick visual landing page
Free-plan truth: Canva supports free publishing for basic pages, while custom-domain features, premium assets, and broader design functionality may depend on the user’s Canva plan. Check Canva Websites for current terms.
Canva is convenient if you already create social graphics, media kits, or promotional material there. Templates make it easy to produce a mini portfolio, model card, event page, or photography-session landing page.
Main limitations: Canva is not a photography-specific gallery system. Its content architecture, SEO, large-library management, client proofing, and print-sales capabilities are limited. A Canva page can feel more like a designed document than a complete business website.
First upgrade trigger: Custom-domain publishing, premium templates or assets, and broader Canva features.
Free forever versus free trial
These services are worth considering, but they should not be included in a strict free-forever ranking:
- Format: 14-day trial with no credit card required; it is not a permanent free plan. Its supplied pricing snapshot lists Basic at $10 per month billed annually or $14 monthly. See Format pricing and the portfolio pricing page.
- Pixpa: 15-day trial with no card required. The trial provides access to every feature and pauses after 15 days until a plan is selected. See Pixpa pricing.
- SmugMug: 14-day free trial, not a permanent free website plan. It is more focused on image hosting, galleries, downloads, and print-oriented workflows. See SmugMug plans.
Before starting any trial, check whether a card is required, whether billing begins automatically, what happens to uploaded images after the trial, whether the site becomes inaccessible or merely unpublished, and whether content can be exported.
Best choice by photographer type
- Beginner building a traditional portfolio: Wix.
- Already paying for Adobe: Adobe Portfolio.
- Delivering client galleries or selling prints: Pixieset.
- Publishing articles and building search traffic: WordPress.com.
- Needing one page quickly: Carrd.
- Wanting animation and experimental design: Framer.
- Wanting advanced customization and accepting complexity: Webflow.
- Needing only contact information and basic pages: Google Sites.
- Seeking creative discovery and networking: Behance.
- Creating a temporary promotional page: Canva Websites.
How to choose the right free platform
- Separate public portfolio from client delivery. A public site should prioritize sequencing, loading speed, and inquiries. A client gallery should prioritize privacy, favorites, downloads, expiration, proofing, and sales.
- Count storage, not just pages or galleries. A curated portfolio may need only 20–60 images, while a client job can require hundreds or thousands. Video and downloadable originals consume capacity quickly.
- Test image quality before publishing. Inspect fine detail, skin tones, shadows, gradients, large-screen viewing, mobile viewing, thumbnails, and watermarks. Do not assume a platform provides original or lossless delivery unless its documentation explicitly says so.
- Check the URL and branding. A URL such as
yourname.comis materially different from a platform subdomain such asyourname.wixsite.com/siteoryourname.webflow.io. Free subdomains and platform branding are acceptable for testing, but may reduce trust for weddings, commercial clients, licensing, or high-value portrait work. - Identify the first upgrade you will need. Common triggers are a custom domain, branding removal, more storage, analytics, forms, better SEO, private galleries, commerce, or higher bandwidth.
- Check export and lock-in before investing time. Confirm whether you can export text, images, blog posts, galleries, metadata, domain settings, and customer data. If documentation is unclear, ask support rather than assuming portability.
Launch checklist for a free photography portfolio
- Select 15–30 of your strongest images instead of uploading everything.
- Export web-ready JPEG or WebP copies and retain full-resolution originals elsewhere.
- Organize work by project, genre, location, or service.
- Write a concise biography and state your location or service area.
- Add contact details, inquiry forms, and social links.
- Check image loading and presentation on a phone and a large screen.
- Test every form, button, gallery, download, and external link.
- Confirm password, privacy, watermark, expiration, and download settings for client work.
- Check whether the plan permits commercial use.
- Keep a separate backup of site copy, images, and client records.
- Before relying on the site commercially, decide whether a custom domain and branding-free presentation are worth the upgrade.
What “professional” usually costs later
A free plan can validate a niche or help you send a portfolio link, but a business-ready site commonly needs a custom domain, platform-branding removal, more storage, analytics, stronger forms, better SEO, e-commerce, email marketing, or dedicated client delivery. The free plan is best treated as a launchpad—not proof that a professional web presence will remain free forever.
For reference, the supplied August 2026 snapshot lists Wix Light at $17.77 per month in a displayed regional view, WordPress.com Personal at $9 per month when billed annually with 6 GB listed storage, Pixieset Basic at $8 per month annually or $10 monthly, Carrd Pro Standard at $19 per year for 10 sites, Framer Basic at $10 per month, and Webflow Freelancer Workspace at $16 per month billed yearly. These figures are not directly comparable: location, currency, taxes, billing cycle, introductory pricing, and whether the figure covers a website, workspace, or bundled product all matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best completely free website builder for photographers?
Wix is the best general-purpose choice for most beginners because it combines permanent free publishing, visual control, templates, and hosting. It uses a Wix subdomain and branding. Carrd is better for one page, while Pixieset is better for client galleries.
Is Adobe Portfolio really free?
It is effectively included with eligible paid Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions. It should not be presented as a standalone free service for someone who does not already pay Adobe.
Can I host high-resolution client galleries for free?
Sometimes, but storage is the constraint. Pixieset’s free plan includes unlimited galleries but only 3 GB of storage, so it may not accommodate large jobs or full-resolution downloads indefinitely.
Do free photography websites include a custom domain?
Usually not. Free plans commonly use a platform subdomain and branding. Connecting a domain such as yourname.com and removing branding generally requires a paid plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are Format, Pixpa, and SmugMug free?
Their supplied official pricing pages describe free trials rather than permanent free plans: Format offers 14 days, Pixpa 15 days, and SmugMug 14 days.
The Bottom Line
Choose Wix for the best strictly free traditional portfolio, Adobe Portfolio if you already pay for Adobe, Pixieset for client galleries and sales, Carrd for one page, and WordPress.com for blogging. Use a free plan to test your presentation and niche, but expect to pay eventually if you need a custom domain, no branding, more storage, stronger SEO, or serious client-commerce tools.
