When Photoshop is slow, freezing, or behaving strangely, change one factor at a time and repeat the same task to see whether it helps. These quick checks can narrow down the cause, but five minutes is an attempt—not a promise that every problem will be fixed.

Start with the symptom: check tool settings for a tool-specific problem, fonts for a Type-tool crash, and local versus network storage for slow file access. Use the steps below as diagnostics; a GPU or plug-in test is not a permanent recommendation for every user.

Quick diagnosis

Symptom First check What it helps test
Photoshop is slow or freezes Repeat the task after closing resource-heavy apps; check Performance preferences. Memory, GPU, plug-in, or other performance contributors.
A tool behaves unexpectedly Choose Reset Tool in the Tool Preset Picker. Whether an unusual tool setting is responsible.
The brush cursor is a crosshair Check Caps Lock. Whether the precise-cursor mode is active.
Scratch disk full or Photoshop will not launch Free space on the scratch-disk drive and review configured disks. Whether temporary storage is constrained.
Photoshop freezes when using Type Test with recently added or duplicate fonts disabled. Whether a font or font cache is involved.
Crashes or odd rendering after a graphics change Temporarily disable Use Graphics Processor and restart. Whether GPU acceleration is related.
Hangs at launch or after an update Check known issues; test without optional plug-ins. Whether a plug-in or release-specific issue is involved.
Shared-drive editing or saving is slow Copy the project locally and compare. Whether network access is the bottleneck.

1. Why is Photoshop so slow or freezing?

Slow performance can have multiple causes, including preferences, GPU settings, memory, plug-ins, external devices, network drives, display demands, or hardware. One setting is unlikely to diagnose every case.

Five-minute diagnostic

  1. Save your work and close resource-heavy applications and documents you are not using.
  2. Repeat the same task and compare the result.
  3. Check Preferences/Settings > Performance and Photoshop’s Efficiency indicator.
  4. If the issue involves a document on a network drive, copy it to a local drive and repeat the task.

Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for Photoshop and scratch-disk storage where possible. Consider hardware changes only after checking whether storage performance is the actual constraint and whether your computer supports the drive.

See Adobe’s guidance for lag, freezing, and slow performance.

If it still fails

Test one change at a time, then repeat the same task. If a local copy works better, investigate network latency or bandwidth before changing other settings.

2. Why is a Photoshop tool giving a strange result?

A crop tool that makes a tiny gray square or a brush that paints nothing may have an unexpected tool setting. Resetting the active tool is a narrower first step than resetting Photoshop’s global preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Five-minute fix

  1. Select the problem tool.
  2. In the Options bar, open the Tool Preset Picker.
  3. Choose Reset Tool. If several tools behave oddly, choose Reset All Tools.
  4. Repeat the same action and check whether the result changed.

Resetting a tool clears its customized settings. If it still behaves unexpectedly, check the selected layer, mask, selection, lock state, and other relevant document settings. Adobe’s basic troubleshooting guidance includes tool-reset steps.

If it still fails

Test the tool in a new document. If it works there, investigate the original document; if it does not, continue with preference and known-issue checks.

3. Why does my brush cursor look like a crosshair?

Caps Lock is a quick explanation for a precise crosshair cursor. On macOS, a difference between the visible brush cursor size and the painted result can also involve the system Accessibility cursor-size setting.

Five-minute check

  1. Press Caps Lock once and check whether the cursor returns to the expected brush outline.
  2. If the visible cursor size still does not match the painted result on macOS, review the system Accessibility cursor-size setting.
  3. Test the brush again in the same document.

If the brush paints nothing or the wrong color rather than merely showing an unexpected cursor, use the tool troubleshooting steps above.

4. Why does Photoshop say the scratch disk is full?

Photoshop uses scratch disks—hard drives or SSDs—as temporary storage when RAM is insufficient. A full scratch-disk drive can prevent Photoshop from launching or interfere with work.

Five-minute fix

  1. Close Photoshop if it is open.
  2. Free space on the drive used for scratch-disk storage.
  3. Review the configured scratch disks in Photoshop’s preferences or settings.
  4. Reopen Photoshop and test the task again.

Adobe explains how to configure scratch disks and resolve scratch-disk-full errors. If storage speed or capacity remains a constraint, check your computer’s compatibility before considering an internal SSD.

If it still fails

Review the configured disks and available space again. Avoid deleting arbitrary temporary files while Photoshop is running.

5. Why does Photoshop crash when I use the Type tool?

A damaged, duplicate, or incompatible font—or a corrupted font cache—can affect Photoshop when it loads fonts. Selecting the Type tool, opening a Type layer, or displaying the Character panel can trigger font loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Five-minute diagnostic

  1. Close Photoshop.
  2. Temporarily disable recently installed or duplicate fonts with your operating system’s font manager.
  3. Restart Photoshop and test the Type tool or Character panel.
  4. If the problem stops, re-enable fonts in small groups to identify the troublesome one.

Adobe’s font troubleshooting guide covers font validation and cache steps. Avoid indiscriminately deleting fonts; isolate the problematic font first.

If it still fails

Follow Adobe’s instructions to reset the font cache, restart, and turn Font Preview off. If only one file triggers the problem, test whether a particular Type layer is involved.

6. Does Photoshop’s GPU cause crashes or rendering problems?

Graphics changes can coincide with crashes or rendering issues. Temporarily disabling GPU acceleration is a diagnostic test: if the same workflow changes, investigate the graphics driver rather than assuming the GPU must always be off.

Five-minute diagnostic

  1. Open Preferences/Settings > Performance.
  2. Turn off Use Graphics Processor.
  3. Restart Photoshop and repeat the same workflow.
  4. If the problem changes, check for a current GPU driver from your computer or graphics-card manufacturer.

Restore GPU acceleration if the test does not point to it. Adobe’s basic troubleshooting steps include GPU and driver checks.

If it still fails

Test other likely causes, such as preferences or plug-ins, one at a time. Disabling the GPU is not a universal permanent fix.

7. Why does Photoshop hang at launch or after an update?

A launch problem can involve a known issue, a plug-in, or preferences. Check Adobe’s known issues and test the simplest reversible causes before making a broader reset.

Five-minute diagnostic

  1. Check Adobe’s current known-issues information for your installed version.
  2. Update Photoshop and your operating system if compatible with your workflow.
  3. Close Photoshop, then hold Shift while launching to test without optional plug-ins.
  4. Repeat the task that caused the hang.

If the issue disappears without optional plug-ins, re-enable or test them one at a time to isolate the cause. A preference reset has wider effects than a tool reset, so back up custom settings before trying one. See Adobe’s troubleshooting steps.

If it still fails

Record whether the hang affects launch, one document, or a particular workflow, then consult Adobe’s known issues and troubleshooting guidance for that symptom.

8. Why is Photoshop slow on a shared drive?

Network latency and bandwidth can make file access and saving slow. Comparing the same project locally helps test whether the shared drive is involved.

Five-minute diagnostic

  1. Save or copy the project to a local drive.
  2. Open the local copy and repeat the same edit or save.
  3. Compare the result with the shared-drive workflow.

If local work is faster, edit and save locally, then upload the finished file. Keep the shared original safe while testing.

If it still fails

If the local copy is also slow, check other performance contributors, such as memory, GPU settings, plug-ins, external devices, and hardware.

FAQ

Why is Photoshop so slow?

Several factors can contribute, including memory, GPU settings, plug-ins, external devices, network access, display demands, and hardware. Repeat the same task after changing one factor at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Photoshop say scratch disk full?

Photoshop uses scratch disks for temporary storage when RAM is insufficient. Free space on the configured drive and review your scratch-disk setup.

Why isn’t my brush painting?

Reset the active tool first. If that does not help, check the selected layer, mask, selection, lock state, and other document settings.

Can a font make Photoshop crash?

Yes. A damaged, duplicate, or incompatible font or a corrupted font cache can affect Photoshop when it loads fonts for Type-related work. Isolate fonts rather than deleting them indiscriminately.

Should I leave the GPU disabled?

Not necessarily. Disabling GPU acceleration is a diagnostic test. If it changes the problem, investigate the driver and compatibility; otherwise, restore the setting and test other causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When five minutes is not enough

Stop repeating the same quick fix if the problem persists. Record whether it affects one document or multiple tasks, whether a local copy changes the result, and whether testing without optional plug-ins or GPU acceleration makes a difference. Those comparisons help narrow down the next troubleshooting step.
