Meshy-4 made AI-assisted 3D ideation more approachable by emphasizing cleaner geometry and a workflow that separated mesh selection from texturing. It could produce useful starting points, but Meshy’s own guidance says results vary and should be inspected; the available evidence does not show that Meshy-4 replaced artists or reliably produced finished production assets.
Meshy-4 is a historical product milestone, not the current API model. Meshy’s changelog records Meshy-5 becoming stable in 2025 and the latest API selection resolving to Meshy 6 in 2026. Check current product availability and documentation before choosing a workflow.
What Meshy-4 introduced
In its launch announcement, Meshy said Meshy-4 improved geometry for both text-to-3D and image-to-3D, highlighting cleaner hard surfaces, sharper corners, and intricate details. These were company claims, not independently measured benchmark results. The available research does not establish comparative quality scores, error rates, or production readiness.

The workflow also changed. Meshy said its older text-to-3D process used separate coarse and refine stages, and that refinement could deviate from the coarse result. Meshy-4 instead generated four untextured candidates before the user selected one for separate texturing. The practical benefit was a clearer opportunity to review geometry before applying surface appearance—not a guarantee that a candidate needed no further work.
Meshy positioned Meshy-4 for flat geometry, sharp corners, and complex detail. It described Meshy-3 Turbo as faster and more suited to organic or strongly artistic styles. These were launch-era product descriptions, not independent comparisons.
How to get from an idea to a usable asset
- Start with one object. Describe its shape, style, and a few concrete defining details. Meshy’s current guide suggests roughly three to six details and recommends tangible descriptions over vague judgments.
- Use a reference image when appearance matters. Meshy says image-to-3D can give more visual control than text-only ideation. Review the image first, then use a clear, front-facing image against a plain background where possible.
- Review the generated mesh. Rotate it and inspect the shape from multiple angles. Meshy’s image workflow describes the initial result as an uncolored base mesh; texturing is a separate step.
- Retry only when useful. A retry creates another interpretation, not a targeted repair. Meshy says retry availability depends on subscription tier, and results can vary.
- Texture and export for the next task. Texturing may have a separate credit cost. Choose a format supported by the receiving application or workflow; Meshy recommends STL or 3MF for 3D-printing exports at the draft stage.
Text-to-3D and image-to-3D compared
| Workflow | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Text-to-3D | You want to explore a rough idea quickly without preparing a reference image. | Results are probabilistic and may not match the prompt exactly. |
| Image-to-3D | You have a visual reference and want closer control over appearance. | The system still has to infer unseen sides, depth, and structure; inspect the mesh from multiple angles. |
What Meshy-4 still could not reliably do
Guarantee an exact match to a prompt
Meshy’s current text-to-3D guide describes generation as probabilistic: outputs can vary and may not match a prompt exactly. It recommends more specific prompts or creating and reviewing a reference image before using image-to-3D. Meshy also warns that contradictory descriptions, very abstract concepts, non-physical effects, and ultra-fine details can be difficult. These are current workflow cautions, not measured Meshy-4 failure rates.

The guide gives examples of small defects to check for, such as an extra finger or a small gap in a mesh. Treat a generated result as a draft to inspect, rather than assuming it is correct because it looks plausible in a preview.

Reconstruct unseen parts from a single image with certainty
An image provides limited evidence about the back, depth, thickness, and relationships between parts. Meshy’s guidance recommends a clear reference image and rotating the result to inspect it. A faithful-looking view from one angle does not establish that the full model is accurate.
Replace controlled design or artist review
Meshy’s launch article said the company did not envision AI completely replacing artists and designers. The useful distinction is between rapid visual ideation and controlled design: generated assets may need review, texturing, and work in a downstream application. The available sources do not independently verify Meshy-4’s geometry quality or production-readiness.

Where Meshy-4 sits in the product history
Meshy-4 should be understood as a historical version. Meshy’s API changelog says Meshy-5 became stable for text-to-3D and image-to-3D on August 13, 2025, and that the latest API selection resolved to Meshy 6 on January 19, 2026. Check the official API changelog and current documentation for availability rather than assuming Meshy-4 remains supported.
Meshy’s current overview covers a broader toolbox, including text-to-3D, image-to-3D, text-to-texture, animation, image creation, video generation, 3D-to-image, PBR map support, and API integration. Do not project these current capabilities backward onto Meshy-4 without checking when each feature arrived.
Licensing and current terms
Meshy’s pricing FAQ describes premium subscribers as owning assets created through the platform and free users as receiving a CC BY 4.0 license. Its image-to-3D guide also displays CC BY 4.0 and Private license options. These are Meshy’s published descriptions, not legal advice; terms can vary by plan and workflow.

Why doesn’t a Meshy model look exactly like my prompt?
Meshy says text-to-3D generation is probabilistic, so results can vary. Try a more specific description focused on one object and a few concrete details, or create and review a reference image before using image-to-3D.
Does an image-to-3D result include color and texture?
Meshy’s current guide describes the initial image-to-3D result as an uncolored white base mesh. Texturing is a separate step.

Are retries a way to repair a specific defect?
No. A retry generates a different result rather than making a targeted edit. Meshy says retry availability depends on subscription tier.
Which file format should I choose?
Choose a format accepted by the application or workflow that comes next. Meshy recommends STL or 3MF for 3D printing at the draft stage; check its current download options and the receiving tool’s requirements.
Is Meshy-4 still the current Meshy model?
No. Meshy’s changelog records Meshy-5 and Meshy 6 milestones after Meshy-4. Check the current API documentation for supported models and migration guidance.
