You can mix small, water-free batches of simple lip and face makeup at home, but “homemade” and “natural” do not mean tested, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, or automatically safer. The recipes below are illustrative craft formulas—not validated cosmetics. They focus on dry or oil-based products for lips, cheeks, and the face; they deliberately exclude mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, lash products, and anything intended for the eyelid or periocular area.

The lower-waste choices are specific: reuse a clean, suitable container, make only a little, and avoid an unnecessary outer package. No comparative life-cycle study establishes that homemade makeup has a lower overall environmental footprint than commercial makeup.

Read this before making any recipe

• Keep every formula anhydrous. Do not add water, hydrosols, fresh fruit or vegetable juice, aloe gel, or saliva. Water-containing mixtures can support microbial growth and need professional preservation and testing.
• Use clean equipment. Wash and dry hands, bowls, spatulas, and containers. A clean container is not the same as a sterile one, so make very small batches and do not assume a long shelf life.
• Use only colorants permitted for the area. A pigment sold as “cosmetic grade” is not automatically approved for every use. Check the particular color additive and whether it is allowed on lips, the general face, or around the eyes. Food-grade, botanical, and mineral descriptions do not replace that check.
• Keep all recipes away from the eyes. FDA advises using cosmetics near the eyes only when they are specifically intended for that area. In a 2022 analysis of 275 DIY eye, eyelash, eye-contour, and remover recipes, Couteau, Girard, and Coiffard reported imprecise quantities, unsuitable substances, and inadequate preservation; their conclusion was that the recipes studied were not safe to use.
• Patch-test cautiously. Apply a small amount of the finished product to a limited area of forearm skin and wait 24 hours. Stop for burning, swelling, rash, or persistent irritation. A patch test cannot prove a product is safe.
• Discard rather than rescue. Throw away a batch if it develops an off smell, visible growth, separation that does not remix, or a changed texture, and discard anything that causes irritation. Never share makeup. During an eye infection, discard eye cosmetics; these recipes are not eye cosmetics.

U.S. FDA classifies lipstick, blush, foundation, face powder, eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara as cosmetics. Cosmetics must be safe under labeled or customary use, and color additives require approval for their intended use. FDA also states: “FDA has not defined the term ‘natural’ and has not established a regulatory definition for this term in cosmetic labeling.”

Ten small-batch recipes

Measurements are kitchen-volume approximations for personal experimentation, not manufacturing specifications. Use a dedicated 0.1-gram scale when you have one. Make only enough for several applications, label the container with the date, and keep fingers out of the product by using a clean spatula.

1. Tinted lip balm

• 1 teaspoon shea butter
• 1/2 teaspoon jojoba or sunflower oil
• 1/2 teaspoon beeswax (or a suitable plant wax, recognizing that plant waxes vary)
• A small amount of a lip-approved cosmetic color additive

1. Place the butter, oil, and wax in a heat-safe cup.
2. Melt in a water bath just until fluid; do not boil.
3. Remove from heat, blend in the color, and pour into a clean, dry tin.
4. Allow it to cool uncovered until firm, then close and label.

Use only color whose documentation permits lip application. Do not substitute craft glitter or an unverified pigment.

2. Sheer lip tint oil

• 1 teaspoon castor oil
• 1/2 teaspoon jojoba or fractionated coconut oil
• A small amount of lip-approved cosmetic color additive

1. Stir the oils in a clean cup.
2. Add color a little at a time until evenly dispersed.
3. Transfer to a clean, narrow-mouth pot; avoid a doe-foot applicator that repeatedly contacts the lips unless it can be cleaned thoroughly.

This is an oil dispersion, not a preserved gloss. Keep the batch tiny and do not add water-based ingredients.

3. Soft cream blush

• 1 teaspoon shea butter
• 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil
• 1/4 teaspoon beeswax or plant wax
• Face-approved color additive suitable for cheek use

1. Melt the butter, oil, and wax gently in a water bath.
2. Stir in the color until no streaks remain.
3. Pour into a clean tin and let it set.

Apply with clean fingertips or a washed brush. Keep it off eyelids and the immediate eye area.

4. Pressed-style powder blush

• 1 teaspoon sericite mica or another face-approved powder base
• 1/2 teaspoon kaolin clay
• A small amount of cheek-approved color additive
• One or two drops of jojoba oil, only if needed for pressing

1. Sift or crush the dry powders together until the color is uniform.
2. Mist—not soak—the mixture with the tiniest amount of oil and stir.
3. Pack into a clean shallow pan and press firmly with clean paper.
4. Leave it open until completely dry before closing.

Avoid creating airborne dust; do not blow on the powder or use it around the eyes.

5. Matte face bronzing powder

• 1 teaspoon kaolin clay
• 1/2 teaspoon sericite mica or another face-approved base
• A small amount of brown, yellow, or red color additives approved for general face use

1. Combine the powders in a dry bowl.
2. Sift repeatedly until the shade is even.
3. Store in a clean, dry compact or jar.

Build color gradually on the cheeks, forehead, and jawline. The finished shade is not a sign that a pigment is permitted around the eyes.

6. Cream highlighter balm

• 1 teaspoon shea butter
• 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil
• 1/4 teaspoon beeswax or plant wax
• Face-approved pearlescent mica

1. Melt the butter, oil, and wax gently.
2. Stir in a mica documented for face use.

7. Sheer face tint powder

• 2 teaspoons arrowroot powder or a face-approved starch
• 1/2 teaspoon kaolin clay
• Color additives approved for general face use

1. Sift all powders together.
2. Test a pinch on the jawline and adjust the color in tiny increments.
3. Store dry in a clean, closable container.

This has no water and no validated preservative system, so make a very small amount and keep the container dry.

8. Tinted lip salve with a satin finish

• 1 teaspoon cocoa butter
• 1/2 teaspoon castor oil
• 1/4 teaspoon beeswax
• Lip-approved color additive

1. Melt the cocoa butter and wax.
2. Stir in castor oil and the color while warm.

9. Face-and-body shimmer lotion bar

• 1 teaspoon cocoa or shea butter
• 1/2 teaspoon beeswax or plant wax
• 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil
• Body- or face-approved cosmetic mica

1. Melt the butter, wax, and oil together.
2. Blend in the mica.
3. Pour into a small mold or tin and cool.

Use on shoulders, collarbones, or cheeks. Keep glitter and mica away from the eyes, and avoid inhaling loose powder while mixing.

10. Colorless setting powder

• 2 teaspoons arrowroot powder or another face-approved starch
• 1/2 teaspoon kaolin clay

1. Sift the powders together until completely uniform.
2. Transfer to a clean, dry jar with a sifter insert if available.
3. Apply sparingly with a clean brush, tapping excess back into the jar only if the brush has not touched damp or oily skin.

Stop if the powder irritates your skin or makes breathing uncomfortable; do not use it as an eye product.

How to make the low-waste choice more credible

• Reuse appropriately: clean and fully dry a small cosmetic tin or jar that is compatible with oils. Do not reuse containers that held food allergens, household chemicals, or products that cannot be cleaned from seams.
• Make less: a tiny batch limits ingredients and packaging, and it limits what must be discarded when quality changes.
• Skip outer packaging: buy or repurpose one suitable container instead of adding a box or secondary wrap.
• Track what you use: note the ingredients, date, and application area on the label so a reaction can be traced and the correct color-use restrictions can be checked.

Homemade or commercial makeup?

Why eye makeup is not included

Do not turn these formulas into eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, lash adhesive, or under-eye products. FDA warns against using cosmetics near the eyes unless they are intended specifically for that area, and color permissions can differ sharply between general cosmetics and eye use. Kohl is not approved for cosmetic use in the United States, and FDA reports links between kohl and lead poisoning in children. Homemade eye products also face the added risks of imprecise dosing, particle migration, contamination, and inadequate preservation identified in the 2022 study.

• You need eye, lash, or periocular makeup.
• You need a tested shelf life, reliable shade matching, or consistent performance.
• You cannot verify a color additive’s permission for the intended body area.
• You have very sensitive skin, an active skin condition, or a history of cosmetic allergy and need professional guidance.
