Start by comparing the rug itself—not the sales pitch. Decide whether you want a pile-knotted halı or a flatwoven kilim, check the materials and condition, compare similar pieces at more than one shop, and get the price and shipping terms in writing. If a rug may be old or culturally protected, confirm its export status with the relevant Turkish museum authority before you buy.
Know what you are buying: halı or kilim
A halı is a pile-knotted carpet with a raised surface. A kilim is flatwoven, without pile, and is generally thinner. That construction difference affects feel, weight, thickness, and how the rug may suit a room. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism describes the Gördes, or double knot, as the Turkish knot used in rug production (Ministry of Culture and Tourism: Weaving).
Turn the rug over and look at the reverse: the design and knot structure may be visible there. Treat this as a basic inspection, not proof of the rug’s maker, age, or origin. A reverse view alone cannot establish that a piece is handmade or genuinely from a particular region.

Inspect construction, materials, and condition
Ask what each material describes
When a seller says “wool,” “silk,” or “cotton,” ask whether that means the pile, the foundation, or both. A rug can combine materials—for example, wool pile with a cotton foundation—so a single-word description may not tell you what you are paying for. Ask for the pile and foundation materials separately and have the answer written down.
Wool is common and durable; cotton may be used in the foundation; silk is generally finer and more expensive. These descriptions are not a substitute for inspecting the rug or specifying its construction. The Ministry’s overview of carpets and rugs provides additional background.

Look beyond knot density
Knot density is one characteristic, not a universal quality score. Consider the rug’s intended use alongside its weave, pattern definition, finishing, materials, and condition. Check for wear, repairs, loose edges, stains, and uneven areas, and ask the seller to identify any known damage. The available sources do not establish a standardized quality grade or a dependable current price table.
Compare similar rugs and negotiate deliberately
There is no reliable, like-for-like current price range established here. A universal price per square metre would be misleading: dimensions, materials, workmanship, age, condition, stated origin, and seller all affect the comparison. Look at several rugs with similar specifications and compare the complete cost, not just the initial asking price.

Buyer guides describe bargaining as common in carpet shops, and also report guided referrals, lengthy presentations, and pressure tactics. These are potential risks, not proof that a particular shop is dishonest. Decide what you are willing to pay, compare before committing, and do not make an offer unless you are prepared to buy at that figure. If the explanation or terms remain unclear, leave and take time to reconsider.
You can say: “Please write the dimensions, pile and foundation materials, stated origin and age, total price, and shipping terms on the receipt. I’m comparing a few rugs before I decide.”

Settle the receipt and shipping terms before paying
Make sure the receipt identifies the exact rug and records the seller’s claims. Ask for the price and currency, packing and shipping charges, estimated delivery time, carrier, tracking, insurance, and who is responsible for export and destination paperwork. Photograph the rug and the receipt before the rug leaves. Shipping costs and destination-country duties vary; check them for your own destination rather than assuming they are included.

Do not assume an old rug can be taken out of Turkey. The Ministry General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums says protected movable cultural property cannot be taken abroad under Law 2863. Its export FAQ also says objects documented by museum directorates as unregistered may be exported when that document is presented (Ministry export FAQ). Ask the relevant museum authority about the specific rug and required documentation before purchase; a seller’s verbal assurance or a generic certificate of authenticity is not a substitute for official export paperwork.

A Ministry Inspection Board circular dated 5 November 1975 discusses examination of carpets and kilims intended for export under the antiquities law then in force. It describes a process in which an item found subject to that law would not be returned to its owner and could be assessed for museum acquisition (1975 circular on carpet and kilim examination). Because it refers to earlier legal provisions, use it as historical context, not as a complete statement of current procedure. The Ministry materials cited here do not establish a universal age cutoff such as 100 years.
