Do you have a pile of UFOs—unfinished objects—waiting for attention? In quilting, getting one moving again can be as simple as gathering its pieces, setting a small next step, or deciding the original plan no longer suits you. These ten practical options, adapted from American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ advice, updated January 13, 2025, are suggestions rather than a proven ranking. Choose the one that matches what is holding up your project.

If the project is hard to pick back up

1. Keep everything together

Store each project with its fabric, sewn units, tools, and instructions so you can find what you need when you have time to sew. A project bin or organizer can make this easier, but any easy-to-find storage spot will do.

2. Set one attainable goal

Write down a clear, manageable next step instead of a vague promise to finish the whole quilt. The source gives “make two blocks per week” as an example—not a universal pace. Adjust the goal to your project and available time.

If time is the main obstacle

3. Use small pockets of sewing time

Look for moments when you can complete a small task, such as piecing a few units. Progress does not have to come in a long session.

4. Try a leader/ender routine

When chain-piecing for a current project, sew a couple of units from an unfinished project at the beginning and end of the chain. This creates small, repeatable opportunities to work on the older project alongside the one already in progress.

7. Choose a reward

Give yourself something enjoyable after completing a meaningful milestone. The source suggests a fat quarter from a local quilt shop or fresh flowers after finishing a quilt; choose a reward that feels worthwhile to you.

If a particular step is holding everything up

8. Consider hiring out the bottleneck

If machine quilting is the step keeping several projects unfinished, consider paying a longarm quilter to do that part. This is an option for a specific obstacle, not a requirement for finishing a quilt.

If you no longer want the original project

9. Change what the pieces will become

Completed blocks or other finished pieces may work as a mini quilt, pillow, or bag. You do not have to use them for the full-size quilt you first planned if that no longer feels worth the time or fabric.

10. Pass the project along

If you would rather not continue, ask whether a friend wants to finish it. A guild or quilt shop may also collect unfinished projects for charity. Passing it on is a reasonable way to let someone else make use of the work already done.
