The best-designed website depends on the job it needs to do. GOV.UK is a stronger model for completing a task than an immersive 3D portfolio, while Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro page is better for demonstrating a physical product. A SaaS company, nonprofit, ecommerce brand, restaurant, and painting contractor all need different kinds of excellence.

This curated list evaluates 11 current examples for clarity, information architecture, visual hierarchy, content, accessibility, performance, responsiveness, and purposeful interaction. It includes practical references for ordinary business websites as well as high-budget experimental work that should be studied—not copied blindly.

Live-site status and featured experiences checked August 10, 2026. The list is an editorial selection, not an objective ranking of every website on the internet.

Quick answer: the 11 best-designed websites to study

How these websites were selected

There is no universal way to rank a government service, a portfolio game, a product-marketing page, and an online store. This list therefore uses category-based judgments rather than pretending that every site serves the same purpose.

The evaluation follows a practical rubric:

Criterion Weight What it means
Purpose and audience clarity 20% Can visitors quickly understand who the site is for and what they can do?
Information architecture and navigation 20% Are pages, categories, search, menus, and next steps organized around user needs?
Visual hierarchy and brand expression 15% Do typography, color, imagery, spacing, and layout support the message?
Content quality 15% Is the copy specific, useful, concise, and appropriate for the audience?
Accessibility and inclusion 15% Can people perceive, operate, understand, and navigate the experience in different ways?
Performance and technical resilience 10% Does the site remain usable on slower devices, networks, browsers, and reduced-motion settings?
Originality and interaction 5% Does novelty clarify the experience rather than add friction?

These categories broadly reflect the Webby Awards judging criteria, which consider content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, innovation, and overall experience. Award recognition is supporting evidence—not proof that a site is ideal for every audience.

1. GOV.UK — best for service design and task completion

Visit: gov.uk · Design system: GOV.UK Design System · Best for: public services, forms, utility websites, and any business where visitors arrive with a specific task.

Why it works

GOV.UK is a useful counterexample to award-gallery thinking. Its homepage immediately explains that visitors can find government services and information, then presents familiar categories such as benefits, tax, passports, driving, education, and visas.

The site is designed around what people need to accomplish—not around the internal structure of government departments. That distinction is crucial. A visitor usually thinks, “I need to renew my passport,” not, “I need to find the department responsible for passports.”

The associated design system provides reusable components and patterns for navigation, forms, tables, accounts, validation errors, confirmation pages, and other common tasks. It includes coded examples and links to user-research evidence, making the system more useful than a simple visual style guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Use plain, familiar labels instead of clever navigation names.
  • Put frequent tasks where visitors can find them quickly.
  • Design error messages and recovery paths as carefully as the successful path.
  • Build repeatable components so every page does not invent its own interaction pattern.

What not to copy

GOV.UK’s restrained appearance is intentional. It is not a model for luxury ecommerce, expressive storytelling, or an experimental portfolio. Borrow its clarity and task structure, not necessarily its entire visual identity.

For a painting contractor, the equivalent might be a navigation organized around Interior Painting, Exterior Painting, Commercial Projects, Areas Served, and Request an Estimate—rather than vague labels such as Solutions or Our Approach.

2. Apple iPhone 17 Pro — best for product storytelling

Visit: Apple iPhone 17 Pro · Best for: physical products, launches, premium brands, and pages that need to make features tangible.

Why it works

Apple’s current product page uses a long-form sequence of product imagery, video, scroll-based sections, comparisons, technical details, camera demonstrations, and purchase paths. Instead of opening with a dense specification sheet, it generally introduces benefits and visual proof before moving into deeper detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page treats the product as something to be demonstrated rather than merely described. Scale, motion, close-ups, sequencing, and comparisons help visitors understand a physical object that they cannot hold through the screen.

The 2026 Webby Awards recognized the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max product site in Best Use of Video or Moving Image. That recognition supports the page’s strength as a moving-image experience, but Apple’s product specifications and performance statements remain Apple’s own marketing claims.

Design principle to borrow

  • Show the result of a feature before explaining its technical mechanism.
  • Use a visual sequence to answer the visitor’s natural questions in order.
  • Reveal complexity progressively instead of presenting every specification at once.
  • Place a clear purchase or inquiry path near moments of high interest.

Trade-offs

Apple has exceptional photography, video, engineering, and production resources. A small business should not assume that cinematic video alone will create the same effect. Long pages also need careful image optimization, keyboard access, readable alternatives, and reduced-motion behavior.

For a painting website, adapt the principle with a well-photographed before-and-after sequence, a short explanation of the preparation process, and a visible estimate button. You do not need a full-screen video background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Stripe — best for presenting a complex product ecosystem

Visit: Stripe · Payments: Stripe Payments · Best for: SaaS companies, financial services, B2B platforms, and businesses with many products or audiences.

Why it works

Stripe has to explain a broad financial infrastructure platform covering payments, billing, payment links, fraud prevention, tax, identity, issuing, subscriptions, Terminal, crypto, and other products. Its site also serves different audiences, including businesses, developers, enterprises, and people who prefer not to code.

Rather than pretending that the product is simple, Stripe organizes complexity. Product pages combine value propositions, interface examples, integration options, payment methods, use cases, pricing information, and calls to action. The payments page explicitly distinguishes between no-code, pre-integrated, and custom-development paths.

HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites

  • Comes with secure packaging
  • It can be a gift option

This is a different kind of minimalism from a sparse landing page. Stripe’s minimalism comes from giving each audience a logical entry point and separating high-level explanation from technical documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Segment a complicated offer by the user’s need, not by your company’s departments.
  • Use interface examples to make an abstract service concrete.
  • Give technical and nontechnical visitors different paths without duplicating the entire site.
  • Keep the primary call to action visible while allowing visitors to research before committing.

Trade-offs

A broad product ecosystem inevitably creates a denser site and a larger content-maintenance burden. Claims about payment volume, reliability, conversion, fraud reduction, or customer results should be attributed to Stripe’s own materials rather than presented as independent findings.

4. Linear — best for focused SaaS product marketing

Visit: Linear · Best for: project-management tools, software products, productivity apps, and focused SaaS homepages.

Why it works

Linear’s homepage positions the product as a system for product development and demonstrates workflows for intake, planning, building, reviewing, and monitoring. Product interfaces appear at meaningful scale rather than being hidden behind generic lifestyle imagery.

Interface animation is used to explain the workflow: what happens when work is organized, moved, reviewed, or completed. The page also reflects Linear’s current positioning around human-and-agent workflows and product development for the AI era; those are current marketing claims and should be understood as Linear’s positioning.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Show the product performing the job it promises to do.
  • Animate a meaningful state change, not a decorative flourish.
  • Repeat a consistent visual language across headlines, interface previews, buttons, and diagrams.
  • Use a concise narrative: problem, workflow, result, proof, and next step.

Trade-offs

Dark, minimal SaaS aesthetics are now widely imitated. A polished marketing page does not prove that the underlying product is easy to use, and a visitor cannot infer speed or reliability without testing. Before copying the style, make sure your product screenshots, copy, and workflow are strong enough to support it.

5. Vercel — best for communicating technical ambition

Visit: Vercel · Best for: developer platforms, infrastructure products, APIs, technical startups, and expert audiences.

Why it works

Vercel’s current homepage presents infrastructure for apps and agents, with sections covering deployment, sandboxes, model gateways, compute, global delivery, deployment environments, security, domains, and other capabilities. Code, terminal-style interface elements, diagrams, and product architecture function as visual content.

For a developer audience, technical specificity can be more persuasive than a lifestyle photograph. Showing commands, deployment states, architecture, and implementation details gives the brand a vocabulary that matches the audience’s work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Match information density to the visitor’s expertise.
  • Let code samples, diagrams, and interface states carry part of the visual design.
  • Replace vague claims with specific workflows and capabilities.
  • Keep documentation and hands-on entry points close to the marketing message.

Trade-offs

The density that works for developers may intimidate a general audience. Vercel’s product messaging can also change quickly, so current claims about customers, traffic, infrastructure, or capabilities should be date-stamped and attributed to Vercel.

6. Patagonia — best for combining ecommerce, editorial, and mission

Visit: Patagonia · Best for: ecommerce brands, ethical businesses, outdoor companies, and organizations whose values are part of the buying decision.

Why it works

Patagonia’s site combines product commerce with activism, stories, repair information, used-product sales through Worn Wear, care guides, environmental campaigns, and organizational information. These functions are part of the main experience rather than being hidden in a corporate footer.

The result is a site that supports more than the immediate transaction. It helps a customer choose, use, repair, reuse, and understand the product. The brand’s values therefore influence the information architecture, not only the photography or color palette.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patagonia received Webby recognition for Best Practices in 2023, a category that considers content, structure, navigation, visual design, interactivity, functionality, and overall experience.

Design principle to borrow

  • Make post-purchase support easy to find.
  • Use editorial content to add context and trust to product pages.
  • Let genuine organizational values affect navigation and content priorities.
  • Connect product, care, repair, reuse, and customer education where appropriate.

Trade-offs

Patagonia’s model reflects a mature global brand and a substantial content operation. Mission-led design works only when an organization’s actions support the message. It cannot be manufactured through a green color palette and a few slogans.

A painter could borrow this approach by combining project galleries with paint-care advice, preparation guides, warranty information, maintenance tips, and a clear explanation of materials and work practices.

7. NASA Eyes on Asteroids — best for data visualization and education

Visit: NASA Eyes · Asteroids app: Eyes on Asteroids · Best for: scientific communication, maps, dashboards, educational projects, and data-heavy storytelling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it works

NASA describes Eyes as a suite of browser-based 3D visualization applications that let people explore NASA data and imagery. Eyes on Asteroids lets visitors explore more than 30,000 asteroids near Earth’s orbit, view close approaches, and follow related missions through interactive 3D storytelling.

The interaction gives the dataset a spatial and narrative structure. Visitors can begin with a broad view, inspect relationships, and follow a question through progressively more detail. That is more useful than presenting a static wall of numbers.

Eyes on Asteroids won the 2023 People’s Voice Award for Best Data Visualization. The award category specifically recognizes understandable and visually appealing representations of complex datasets.

Design principle to borrow

  • Use interaction to answer questions, not merely to create movement.
  • Pair a high-level overview with progressive detail.
  • Explain labels, scales, filters, and relationships in plain language.
  • Provide a narrative path for visitors who do not already understand the dataset.

Trade-offs

3D visualization can create device, browser, battery, and accessibility problems. A scientific or data-driven interface needs explanatory text and alternative representations. A technically impressive visualization is not automatically understandable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. UNITED24 Rebuild Map — best for transparent, mission-driven storytelling

Visit: UNITED24 Rebuild Map · Best for: nonprofits, public-interest campaigns, fundraising, location-based stories, and projects where evidence must support action.

Why it works

The current UNITED24 Rebuild experience presents destroyed apartment buildings through a map and list interface. Visitors can select a building, learn about its history, and see the estimated cost of rebuilding it. At the time checked, the page identified 18 apartment buildings in the experience.

The map makes location central, while the list view gives visitors a more direct alternative to spatial exploration. Filters, statistics, individual stories, and a donation path help connect the larger issue to a specific action.

Eleken’s design roundup describes the experience as a dark, high-contrast, data-driven interface with map/list switching, filters, donation paths, and transparency-oriented statistics. The underlying rebuilding figures and project data should be treated as information supplied by UNITED24, not independently verified by the design itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Use a map only when location adds meaning.
  • Offer both a visual exploration mode and a straightforward list mode.
  • Place evidence and numbers close to the call to action.
  • Use individual stories to make a large issue concrete without losing the broader context.

Trade-offs

Donation totals, project counts, and reconstruction estimates can change. Record the date when citing them. The experience concerns the war in Ukraine and should be described factually and sensitively.

9. Lusion — best for immersive 3D and interactive brand experiences

Visit: Lusion · Best for: creative studios, entertainment brands, technology showcases, and high-end campaign work.

Why it works

Lusion’s homepage positions the studio around 3D visual storytelling, motion, development, and interactive web experiences. Its featured work includes immersive brand worlds, 3D projects, games, campaign sites, and other interactive experiences.

The studio uses its own site as a demonstration of its capabilities. Motion, 3D, typography, and navigation form one art direction rather than appearing as disconnected effects. For a creative studio, the website answers a prospective client’s question—“What can this team make?”—before the visitor reads a long service description.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design principle to borrow

  • Make the medium part of the demonstration when the medium is your product.
  • Use motion to establish a brand world, not just to decorate a transition.
  • Keep a clear relationship between the interaction and the service being sold.

What to test before copying it

  • Keyboard navigation and visible focus.
  • prefers-reduced-motion behavior.
  • Loading states and readable content before 3D assets finish loading.
  • Mobile and low-end-device behavior.
  • A fallback path if WebGL, WebGPU, or a large media asset is unavailable.

Immersive work can be expensive to produce and maintain. It is best treated as a high-end reference, not the default pattern for a local service business.

10. Bruno Simon — best for turning a portfolio into an interactive world

Visit: Bruno Simon · Best for: creative developers, game designers, 3D artists, and portfolios where the interaction itself demonstrates expertise.

Why it works

Bruno Simon’s portfolio asks visitors to drive around a 3D environment to discover information about the creator. The current site exposes controls for keyboard, mouse, mobile, tablet, and gamepad interaction, along with options for audio, quality, renderer, reset, and respawn.

The site also identifies its technical stack, including Three.js, WebGL/WebGPU, Rapier, and Howler.js, and links to publicly available source code under an MIT license. The technology is not hidden implementation detail; it is part of the portfolio’s proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also a useful current failure mode: the site displays a server-offline notice for score saving while the core portfolio remains usable. Separating an optional, server-dependent feature from the main experience is good resilience design.

Design principle to borrow

  • Let the format of the portfolio demonstrate the creator’s specialty.
  • Give visitors a memorable reason to explore.
  • Expose controls and recovery options in an experimental interface.
  • Keep important information available without requiring visitors to complete the entire game.

Trade-offs

Novel navigation can frustrate visitors who want contact details, work samples, or a résumé immediately. A game-like portfolio should always have a direct fallback. Performance can also differ substantially across desktop, mobile, gamepad, WebGL, and WebGPU environments.

11. Girlboss — best for a content-rich media and commerce ecosystem

Visit: Girlboss · Best for: editorial brands, communities, newsletters, podcasts, career platforms, and businesses with several content types.

Why it works

Girlboss currently combines editorial categories, newsletters, podcasts, jobs, career resources, guides, and ecommerce elements. Its navigation separates these content types while keeping the overall brand recognizable and action-oriented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A multi-purpose brand can easily become a collection of unrelated destinations. Girlboss is useful to study because it treats content grouping and calls to action as a central design problem. Editorial, commerce, community, and recruitment can coexist when the hierarchy tells visitors what belongs together.

The earlier Website Builder Expert list, updated July 25, 2023, selected Girlboss for its use of color, scrolling, clear calls to action, and navigation across multiple offerings. The current site should be judged on its present structure rather than assumed to be unchanged from that article.

Design principle to borrow

  • Group content by what visitors want to find.
  • Use distinct calls to action without allowing every module to compete equally.
  • Give editorial content enough space to be useful rather than treating it as filler around a signup form.
  • Use recurring design elements to make a broad content ecosystem feel coherent.

Trade-offs

Content-heavy homepages can become crowded, repetitive, or overly promotional. Newsletter, commerce, advertising, and editorial objectives need an explicit hierarchy, especially on mobile.

What the original 2023 list gets right—and why it needs updating

The exact-title article “Journey Through the Best Designed Websites: Top 11 Picks” was updated July 25, 2023. It featured Girlboss, Swab the World, Bod Drinks, Apple, Fat Choy, Egg Shop, Ivy Chen, WeAreOSM, Squadeasy, Bruno Simon, and Pioneer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It remains useful as a snapshot of 2023 web-design inspiration, but a list of live websites needs a current-status audit. Several featured experiences have changed materially:

This drift is why a “best-designed websites” article should show a last-checked date and link to the official site. Award-winning or visually distinctive pages can be redesigned, redirected, discontinued, or left with broken dependencies.

What makes a website well designed?

1. It creates immediate comprehension

Within a few seconds, visitors should understand what the organization does, who it serves, and what they can do next. A painting contractor’s homepage should not make visitors decode an abstract slogan before finding the service area or estimate button.

2. It uses user-centered information architecture

Navigation should reflect the visitor’s mental model. GOV.UK organizes around tasks; Stripe provides different routes into a complex platform; Patagonia connects shopping with care and repair. These are more useful patterns than copying a menu simply because it looks fashionable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. It establishes visual hierarchy

Headings, body copy, buttons, imagery, spacing, and supporting information should have distinct roles. If every section is oversized, animated, brightly colored, or bold, nothing is actually prioritized.

4. It uses specific content

Design cannot rescue vague writing. Strong websites explain what is offered, who it is for, what happens next, and why the visitor should trust the organization. Product screenshots, project details, prices, service areas, timelines, testimonials, and policies should answer real questions.

5. It makes interaction purposeful

Animation should demonstrate a product, reveal a story, explain a relationship, or help a visitor make a decision. A cursor effect or scroll transition may look polished but still add no value.

6. It includes accessibility from the beginning

WCAG 2.2 organizes accessibility around four principles: content must be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. In practice, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keyboard navigation and visible focus states.
  • Meaningful text alternatives for images.
  • Sufficient color contrast.
  • Labels, instructions, and useful error recovery for forms.
  • Logical headings, landmarks, and accessible names for controls.
  • Reduced-motion support and controls to pause or stop moving content.
  • Zoom, reflow, readable text, and usable touch targets.
  • Menus, maps, tables, and interactive scenes that work without hover.

An accessibility overlay or widget is not proof that a site conforms to WCAG. Automated scans are useful, but manual keyboard testing, screen-reader testing, and testing with disabled users reveal problems that an overlay cannot fix.

7. It respects performance

Visual ambition has a technical cost. Large images, video, web fonts, JavaScript, WebGL, WebGPU, and third-party tools can delay the first useful interaction or drain a mobile battery.

As a practical reference, Core Web Vitals define “good” thresholds of:

  • Largest Contentful Paint: 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint: 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift: 0.1 or less.

These thresholds are assessed at the 75th percentile of page views and segmented by device type. Do not publish invented Lighthouse scores or call a site “instant” without documenting the page URL, test date, device, location, connection profile, and tool version.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. It works responsively

Responsive design is not just shrinking desktop content. A mobile version may need a different menu, a shorter media sequence, a simplified table, a list alternative to a map, or a direct fallback for a 3D experience. Touch interaction must replace hover-dependent behavior, and important content must remain available if advanced JavaScript fails.

Which design approach fits your project?

If you are building… Study… Borrow…
A government or public service GOV.UK Plain labels, task flows, forms, and error recovery
A SaaS product Linear and Stripe Product demonstrations and audience-specific paths
A developer platform Vercel Code, architecture, documentation, and technical specificity
A physical product Apple Benefit-led visual sequencing and product detail
An ecommerce brand Patagonia Product, editorial, care, repair, and mission content
A nonprofit or campaign UNITED24 Evidence, individual stories, location, and action
A data-heavy story NASA Eyes Exploration, progressive detail, and explanatory labels
A creative portfolio Bruno Simon and Lusion Interactive proof of capability—with a direct fallback
A media or community brand Girlboss Content grouping and a controlled call-to-action hierarchy
A local painting business GOV.UK, Apple, Patagonia, and Girlboss Clear service navigation, project proof, educational content, and a strong estimate path

Practical lessons for a painting website

A painting company usually does not need a portfolio game or a WebGL scene. It needs to remove uncertainty and make contacting the business easy. The most useful combination from this list would be:

  1. GOV.UK’s task clarity: show services, locations, and the estimate process in plain language.
  2. Apple’s visual proof: use sharp before-and-after project photography and explain the transformation.
  3. Patagonia’s educational support: publish preparation, paint-care, maintenance, and material guidance.
  4. Girlboss’s content grouping: keep residential, commercial, interior, exterior, and project-gallery content organized.
  5. Stripe’s audience segmentation: give homeowners, property managers, and commercial clients routes that match their questions.

A strong structure might be Home, Services, Project Gallery, About, Service Areas, FAQs, and Request an Estimate. Include practical information such as preparation, surfaces, scheduling, insurance, cleanup, warranty, and what the customer should do next.

What not to copy from impressive websites

  • Full-screen video before the message: visitors should not wait through a brand film to find out what you offer.
  • Scroll hijacking: do not take control of a visitor’s scrolling unless the interaction has a clear benefit.
  • Hover-only interactions: hover is unavailable or unreliable on many touch devices.
  • Unlabeled icons: familiar-looking symbols are not always understandable or accessible.
  • Low contrast and tiny text: visual atmosphere is not more important than readability.
  • Uncontrolled motion: provide reduced-motion behavior, pause controls, and a static route.
  • Heavy 3D on mobile: test low-end phones, battery use, touch controls, and fallback behavior.
  • Premium imagery without premium content: a beautiful photograph cannot replace proof, pricing context, process information, or a clear call to action.
  • Copying a builder-based site blindly: a site made with Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, Webflow, Framer, or another CMS may still depend on custom CSS, JavaScript, photography, illustration, copywriting, and specialist animation.

Useful alternatives and honorable mentions

These examples may be useful for narrower projects, but they were not automatically mixed into the main list because their current status or evidence should be verified before publication or recommendation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Kismet: Forbes Advisor India’s current roundup highlights it as a Squarespace restaurant site with simple information structure, split-color design, custom typography, and an accessibility widget. Verify the official restaurant URL, operating status, and accessibility behavior before using it as a current model.
  • Resend: KrishaWeb’s 2026 roundup highlights its concise developer-focused design and prominent documentation path. It is a possible alternative if a developer audience matters more than a media or community audience.
  • FullyRaw: The same Forbes Advisor India collection includes it as a content-heavy lifestyle brand combining programs, retreats, coaching, speaking, products, and editorial content.
  • Builder showcases: Webflow, Framer, Squarespace, Wix, and Shopify examples are appropriate when the question is specifically “what can I build without coding?” They should not be treated as equivalent to bespoke NASA, Apple, Lusion, or Bruno Simon experiences.

Why award galleries are useful—but incomplete

Directories such as Website Design Awards and DesignRush are valuable discovery tools. They surface new work, creative studios, campaign sites, and experimental portfolios that ordinary searches may miss.

However, their incentives naturally favor visual distinction, novelty, and high-budget custom development. They do not necessarily identify the best patterns for a bank, doctor, local contractor, university, ecommerce store, or government service. A visually beautiful site may still hide important information behind animation, fail on keyboard navigation, rely on hover, suffer from poor contrast, or take too long to become usable.

The right question is not simply, “Does this site look impressive?” It is, “What does this design decision help the visitor understand or accomplish—and what does it cost?”

How to audit an example before borrowing its idea

  1. Check the live URL: confirm that the featured page still exists and has not redirected or closed.
  2. Try the primary task: buy, donate, contact, sign up, search, book, read, or complete the service.
  3. Use only a keyboard: check menus, buttons, forms, dialogs, carousels, maps, and custom interactions.
  4. Test at mobile widths: inspect navigation, image crops, tables, maps, forms, and touch targets.
  5. Turn on reduced motion: check whether content remains understandable and usable.
  6. Disable or slow the network: look for loading states, layout shifts, missing content, and blocked interactions.
  7. Check the content without decoration: headings, labels, links, and calls to action should still make sense.
  8. Measure performance properly: document the URL, date, device, location, network profile, and tool version rather than repeating an unsupported score.
  9. Find the fallback: advanced 3D, video, maps, and JavaScript should not be the only way to access essential information.
  10. Ask whether the idea suits the business: a memorable interaction is useful only if it supports the audience’s goal.

Final verdict

The strongest website on this list is not the most animated one. It is the one whose visual system, content, interaction, accessibility, performance, and business purpose reinforce one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Study GOV.UK for clarity, Apple for product demonstration, Stripe for organizing complexity, Linear for SaaS storytelling, Vercel for technical specificity, Patagonia for connected commerce and mission, NASA for data exploration, UNITED24 for evidence-led action, and Lusion or Bruno Simon for immersive creative work.

Then borrow the underlying decision—not just the color palette, typography, animation, or 3D effect. The best idea to take from any great website is the decision it makes about what the visitor needs to understand or do next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best-designed website overall?

There is no objective overall winner because websites solve different problems. GOV.UK is the strongest task-focused example in this list, Apple is a leading product-storytelling reference, Stripe organizes a complex ecosystem well, and Bruno Simon is a standout experimental portfolio. Choose the example that matches your audience and primary goal.

Which of these websites is easiest for a small business to recreate?

GOV.UK, Stripe, Patagonia, and Girlboss offer the most transferable structural lessons: clear navigation, useful content, organized services, and visible next steps. Their exact visual execution may still require professional photography, copywriting, custom CSS, or development. A website builder makes implementation easier, but does not make the underlying strategy automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are visually impressive websites accessible?

Not necessarily. Accessibility requires deliberate testing of keyboard access, focus states, text alternatives, contrast, forms, screen-reader structure, zoom, reflow, touch interaction, and reduced motion. A widget or award does not prove WCAG conformance. Use the principles in WCAG 2.2 and test each interaction independently.

Should a local painting company use 3D or animation on its website?

Usually only when the effect helps explain the service or brand. For most painting companies, high-quality project photography, before-and-after comparisons, clear service pages, preparation information, service areas, testimonials, and an easy estimate form will produce a more useful experience than a heavy 3D homepage. If animation is used, provide a fast, readable, mobile-friendly fallback.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The best-designed website is the one that makes its visitor’s next step clear. Use GOV.UK for structure, Apple for visual demonstration, Stripe and Linear for product explanation, Patagonia for connected content, NASA and UNITED24 for interactive storytelling, and Lusion or Bruno Simon for carefully justified experimentation. Borrow the principle, test the implementation, and keep accessibility, performance, and task completion ahead of novelty.
