11×17 paper is 11 inches wide by 17 inches long: 279.4 × 431.8 mm. It is commonly called tabloid or ledger and is identified in the cited references as ANSI B. These names generally describe the same sheet, sometimes with portrait called tabloid and landscape called ledger. It is close to, but not interchangeable with, ISO A3.

What do “11×17,” tabloid, ledger, and ANSI B mean?
11×17 inches is the clearest name when you need to check a paper listing, artwork layout, or printer specification: it states the sheet’s dimensions without relying on naming conventions.
Tabloid is a common North American name for the format. Some references associate tabloid with portrait orientation and ledger with landscape orientation, but that distinction is common usage, not a universal rule across printer menus or paper sellers. Ricoh’s glossary and Brother Canada’s paper-size reference use these names for the format.

ANSI B is the designation the cited references use for this North American size; Kodak labels it “Tabloid ANSI B” in its workflow documentation. “B-size” can be informal shorthand for ANSI B, so check the context: ANSI B is not the same as a sheet in the separate ISO B series. The cited Portland Community College chart also lists Arch B separately at 12×18 inches, another reason to rely on the dimensions rather than the letter alone.
How large is 11×17 compared with A3?
Converting inches to millimetres gives 11×17 inches as exactly 279.4×431.8 mm. Kodak rounds the format to 279×432 mm. Kodak’s comparison also shows that ISO A3 is about 297×420 mm, or 11.7×16.5 inches: A3 is wider and shorter, so an A3 layout may need scaling or repositioning to print on 11×17 paper, and vice versa.

One manufacturer reference contains a conflicting metric figure for the short side: Ricoh gives approximately 297.4 mm, but 11 inches converts to 279.4 mm. The latter is the mathematically consistent dimension and aligns with Kodak’s rounded 279 mm figure.
When is 11×17 useful for painting and print work?
A larger sheet can provide room for a painting study, presentation sheet, poster, or folded brochure. Ricoh also lists spreadsheets and engineering drawings among uses for this size. The intended image area will be smaller than the paper if the printer requires margins, so check whether the artwork must fit within a printable area or can use borderless printing; those capabilities depend on the device.

For a painting or scanned artwork, choose the page size in the document before arranging the image and text. If the source file is A3, do not assume it will land at the same physical size on 11×17 paper: compare the dimensions and select an intentional scale or adjust the layout. The same check helps avoid cropping when a print dialog applies a fit, fill, or actual-size setting.
How can you tell whether a printer supports 11×17 paper?
Support is model-specific. A printer being able to print, or supporting A3, does not establish that it accepts 11×17 stock. Ricoh notes that 11×17 printing is intended for devices designed for larger-format printing; consult the exact model’s media specifications and tray limits before buying paper.

- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model. Look for supported media sizes and the tray or manual-feed slot that accepts 11×17.
- Check the printer’s paper-size menu. Confirm that 11×17, Tabloid, or Ledger is available for the intended tray. Menu labels may vary.
- Set the document and print dialog to the same sheet size. Confirm orientation, scaling, and printable-area settings before printing the full job.
- Match the paper to the device. Verify sheet dimensions, paper weight, and finish against the manufacturer’s media guidance; a size match alone does not establish that a stock is suitable.
When shopping, search terms such as “11×17 printer paper,” “tabloid paper,” or “ledger paper” can surface the format. Check the stated dimensions rather than relying only on the name, then confirm your printer’s tray support and the stock’s weight and finish.

No origin should be inferred from the format references cited here. They establish how the name is currently used for a paper size, not its historical etymology. For practical purposes, dimensions are the reliable identifier.
