A brief 2009 report described children in Malawi making toys from found items and reported that researcher Avik Maitra was developing toy designs using local materials and factory byproducts. Here, “junk” means found or leftover material in that account—not a documented list of specific objects or toy designs.
What did the report describe?
In a post published January 20, 2009, Make: writer Patti Schiendelman pointed readers to an Inhabitots article about Avik Maitra, whom the post described as a Columbia University graduate doing a research fellowship in Malawi. The post also invited people with usable leftovers to contact Maitra. It does not provide a direct quotation from him or from any child, so the activity and project should be understood as Make:’s brief account rather than as first-hand testimony.
What does the account leave unknown?
The accessible Make: post is short and points to an underlying Inhabitots article that is not available through this source. It does not name the children or give their location within Malawi, describe particular toys or provide instructions. Nor does it establish how widespread the activity was, whether the toys were tested for safety or sold, or whether the design work became a formal program.
