Set out one simple, paper-based activity at your toddler’s place before dinner, and they can color, scribble, choose, or arrange while the meal begins. These ideas are designed for brief, flexible engagement—not a guaranteed length of time. An adult should prepare cutting and assembly in advance, keep supplies age-appropriate, and supervise throughout.
Before you set up the kids table
- Use large paper, a few easy-to-grip crayons, and pre-cut shapes. CDC lists crayons and paper as supplies that let children use their imagination during play; choose activities that match your child’s skills (CDC, Tips for Child-led Play).
- Keep scissors, glue, paint, and complex assembly in adult hands. Read labels and choose art materials intended for children, as advised by the CPSC Art and Craft Safety Guide.
- Keep small loose pieces away from children younger than three and follow age guidance on packaging (CPSC, Toys).
- Stay close, especially if your toddler mouths objects. The CDC says: “Encourage your toddler not to put pencils or crayons in their mouth when coloring or drawing.” (CDC, Positive Parenting Tips: Toddlers (2–3 years old))
12 low-prep Thanksgiving table crafts
1. Paper turkey coloring page
Place a large, simple turkey outline in front of your child with a few crayons. Let them color the body, feathers, or background in any way they choose.
2. Color-your-own placemat
Put a sheet of paper larger than the plate at the child’s place. Invite coloring around the plate area, leaving the center clear for dishes.

3. Thankful picture
Ask your toddler to draw or scribble something—or someone—they enjoy. An adult can write the child’s dictated words along the bottom.

4. Paper pumpkin
Pre-cut one large pumpkin shape. Offer orange, green, brown, and other crayons so your child can color the pumpkin and its stem.
5. Leaf-outline coloring
Draw or print one oversized, uncomplicated leaf outline. Your toddler can fill it with fall colors, dots, lines, or broad scribbles.

6. Turkey feather coloring
Prepare a turkey body and several large paper feather shapes. Let the child color each piece; an adult can assemble them later, away from the meal.
7. Paper-strip collage
Set out a few wide paper strips and one larger sheet. The toddler can choose where strips go; an adult handles glue and supervises any sticking.

8. Table-name card
Fold a large piece of paper into a standing card. Your child decorates it with crayons, and an adult writes the child’s name in large letters.

Provide a large corn outline for coloring. Use drawn details rather than loose kernels or tiny decorations.

10. Autumn-color picture
Offer a small selection of fall-color crayons and invite a free-form drawing. There is no required picture or coloring pattern.
11. Paper-plate turkey
If you use a plate, prepare it and the large components before guests sit down. Avoid small add-ons; an adult should control adhesive and supervise the activity.

12. Family handprint keepsake
Use washable paint only if you can manage spills and cleanup without disrupting dinner. Otherwise, trace a hand on paper and let your toddler decorate the outline with crayons.
