French designer Mathieu Lehanneur designed the Paris 2024 Olympic torch, relay cauldron and Olympic cauldron as one connected narrative. The torch carried the flame through France; the cauldron transformed its arrival into a floating ring of light and water above Paris. Although it looked like a conventional fire, the cauldron’s visible effect used water, light and electricity rather than fuel combustion.

Who designed the Paris 2024 Olympic torch and cauldron?
Mathieu Lehanneur designed all three Paris 2024 flame objects: the hand-held torch, the relay cauldron used at stops along the route, and the Olympic cauldron installed in Paris. He described them as three chapters in the Olympic Flame’s journey from Olympia, through torchbearers and relay destinations, to the Games’ final celebration.
Their shared metallic appearance refers to Olympic medals—gold, silver and bronze. In Lehanneur’s description, the cauldron is the epilogue: it lifts the flame back into the sky as an Olympic star. This makes the objects a single design story rather than unrelated pieces of event equipment.
The Paris 2024 torch: form, materials and production
Paris 2024 presented the torch on 25 July 2023 after selecting Lehanneur to design it. The Olympic movement said its shape, colour and visual references were intended to express the identity of that edition of the Games.

The planned total was reported as five times fewer than at previous Games editions, with reducing production impact given as the reason. That figure describes the planned run, not necessarily the number ultimately distributed or retained.
How the torch was made in France
ArcelorMittal’s manufacturing account says the torch used recycled steel that the company describes as “reduced-carbon” and was produced in France. The documented route ran from steel casting at Châteauneuf to rolling at Florange, cutting at Woippy, forming by a French silversmith in Vire, and final finishing, burner installation and assembly.
“Reduced-carbon” is the manufacturer’s description. The published account does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment for the completed torch, so it should not be treated as a measured carbon footprint or proof that the torch was environmentally superior to every earlier design.

What was special about the Olympic cauldron?
The Paris cauldron was a flame-ring suspended beneath a helium-filled balloon. Lehanneur’s studio describes a 22-metre-diameter balloon and a traction capacity equivalent to nearly five tonnes. The ring used a machined and anodized aluminium structure whose components were optimized for low weight, allowing the installation to rise above the Jardin des Tuileries.

Was the Paris Olympic cauldron a real flame?
The flame seen in the cauldron was not a conventional fuel-burning fire. Paris 2024 and EDF created a fuel-free visual effect made solely from water and light, powered by an electric system. Fine water effects and illumination produced the appearance of a luminous flame inside the ring.

This distinction matters: the Olympic Flame carried by torchbearers in the relay remained the traditional flame brought from Olympia. The cauldron’s flame-like spectacle was the Paris installation’s technological interpretation of that arrival, not an electrically generated replacement for the relay flame itself.
Why use water, light and electricity?
- It avoided burning fuel in the elevated installation.
- It made a flame-shaped effect possible without a conventional gas or liquid-fuel burner.
- It allowed the visual system to be integrated with a large, lightweight balloon-borne ring.
EDF later recreated the effect as a fully electric Anniversary Flame for the cauldron’s return. Claims about lower environmental impact should remain tied to this specific fuel-free system; they do not establish a full lifecycle comparison for every material or energy input.

What happened to the Paris 2024 cauldron after the Olympics?
The official La Vasque legacy plan returned the installation to the Jardin des Tuileries for three summers. Evening ascents were scheduled from 21 June to 14 September, and the use of the installation was extended through 2027. Seasonal opening times and ascent schedules can change, so visitors should verify the practical information on the official legacy site before travelling.

The Tuileries setting also connects the cauldron to aviation history: the site presents it as a tribute to an early hydrogen-filled balloon flight launched from the gardens in 1783. The post-Games display therefore preserves both the Paris 2024 design and a local history of ballooning.
How the torch and cauldron complete one design narrative
Chapter one: carrying the flame
The torch is the object of human movement. Its steel body was sized to be carried by relay participants across France, turning the flame’s journey into a succession of personal handovers.
Chapter two: stopping along the route
Relay cauldrons marked selected destinations and gave communities a shared focal point when the torch arrived. They belong to the same visual family as the hand-held torch while operating at a public gathering scale.

The Olympic cauldron completed the route by moving the flame effect upward. Its balloon, aluminium ring, water and light converted a traditional ground-level symbol into a floating night-time and daytime spectacle.
