“Unrestricted AI image generator” usually means a local or self-hosted tool that does not send every prompt through a provider’s centralized content filter. It does not mean unlimited legal use, anonymous operation, or permission to generate harmful imagery. For example, Stability AI’s Acceptable Use Policy, effective July 31, 2025, also applies to self-hosted Stability technology and prohibits specified harmful or illegal uses.
For painters and digital artists, the practical appeal is control: reference images can stay on your computer, workflows can be repeated, and tools such as inpainting, ControlNet, masking, and image-to-image generation can support concept development. The trade-off is that you become responsible for software security, model licenses, privacy, metadata, and the final use of the image.
What to look for in a local AI image generator
Before choosing an interface, separate three questions that are often blurred together:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Where does generation happen? Local inference is different from a cloud service, even when both are accessed through a browser.
- Which models can it run? A flexible interface may support SDXL, SD 1.5, FLUX, ControlNet, LoRAs, or newer model families, but support varies by version.
- What information leaves the computer? Model downloads, update checks, plug-ins, telemetry, cloud rendering, and account features can create network traffic even when the image itself is generated locally.
For painting work, also check support for image-to-image generation, inpainting, ControlNet or other pose and composition controls, reference images, layer-based editing, and export metadata.
12 unrestricted or locally run AI image generators
These tools are not equally “unrestricted,” and the label should not be read as a recommendation to bypass safety rules. They are included because they offer local, self-hosted, or unusually configurable workflows.
| Generator | Best fit for artists | Main limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|
| AUTOMATIC1111 | Large extension ecosystem and detailed Stable Diffusion controls | Extensions, metadata, model compatibility, and installation complexity |
| Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge | Users who want an A1111-style interface with resource-management improvements | A1111 extensions are not guaranteed to work |

1. AUTOMATIC1111 Stable Diffusion WebUI
AUTOMATIC1111 remains one of the most configurable local interfaces. Its documented tabs include txt2img, img2img, Extras, PNG Info, Settings, and Extensions. The Script → Prompt matrix can generate combinations of prompt elements, which is useful when testing painting styles, palettes, or compositions systematically.
Installation begins with the official repository command:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
git clone https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git
One practical privacy issue is PNG metadata. Generated files may contain the prompt, seed, sampler, dimensions, model name, and other settings. Check the metadata before sending a work-in-progress to a client or posting a reference image publicly.
2. Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge
Forge is a fork and platform built on the Stable Diffusion WebUI ecosystem, with a focus on resource management, faster inference, and experimental features. The official repository says it is based on SD-WebUI 1.10.1 at the referenced commit and syncs with upstream periodically, rather than tracking every upstream change immediately. Its familiar interface makes it attractive to artists moving from A1111, particularly when GPU memory is tight.
The documented clone command is:
git clone https://github.com/lllyasviel/stable-diffusion-webui-forge.git
On Windows, the project documents starting the installation with webui-user.bat. Do not assume that an A1111 extension will work in Forge: the backend and interface behavior differ, so keep a known-good installation or workflow before migrating a working painting setup.
3. SD.Next
SD.Next is a cross-platform WebUI aimed at supporting several diffusion model families, image and video generation, captioning, and processing tools. Its Control tab brings together tools such as ControlNet, IP-Adapters, T2I Adapter, ControlNet XS, and ControlNet LLLite. Current feature documentation describes a HiDiffusion option in the Text, Image, and Control tabs.

The documented clone command is:
git clone https://github.com/vladmandic/sdnext
Its breadth is both its strength and its weakness. A checkpoint, VAE, scheduler, or conditioning method that behaves correctly with one model may be ignored or produce artifacts with another. When an image suddenly loses structure, test the workflow with the model’s recommended settings rather than changing several controls at once.
4. ComfyUI
ComfyUI uses node graphs instead of a single fixed prompt form. That makes it particularly useful for painters building repeatable pipelines: load a sketch, encode a prompt, apply a ControlNet reference, generate an image, upscale it, and save the result through a graph that can be reused.
Built-in templates are available through Workflow → Browse Workflow Templates. The Comfy CLI documents this update command:
comfy update comfy –version latest
By default, the local server binds to 127.0.0.1. That keeps it intended for the same computer. Exposing it on a network changes the security situation and requires deliberate firewall and authentication controls. Custom nodes should be treated as software, not harmless presets: they can execute arbitrary Python code.
5. InvokeAI
InvokeAI is free, open-source, Apache-2.0-licensed, self-hosted image-generation software with a unified canvas, node workflows, inpainting, ControlNets, LoRAs, textual inversions, and support for model families including SD 1.5, SDXL, and Flux. Its canvas makes it a natural fit for artists who want to develop a composition rather than produce isolated prompt results.
Selecting an image in the Gallery and clicking Info reveals generation details. InvokeAI stores information such as the prompt, seed, and model in generated files. Its .invk canvas projects can include raster layers, masks, reference images, and generation parameters; embedded image data may be included in the archive, while model files themselves are not. Treat a project archive as a working document, not as a flattened image.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prompt syntax is model-dependent. Invoke’s Compel-style weighting applies to SD 1.5 and SDXL workflows but not necessarily to newer families such as Flux, Z-Image, CogView4, or Qwen Image.
6. Fooocus
Fooocus reduces the number of controls exposed to beginners, making it approachable for quick concept sketches and image-to-image experiments. Its official repository lists version 2.5.5, released August 12, 2024. That date matters: many articles describe Fooocus as if it were an actively updated universal interface for every new model, which the official project does not establish. The project also warns that unofficial sites using Fooocus-like names are unrelated.
The first inpainting operation downloads an additional file, Fooocus\\models\\inpaint\\inpaint_v26.fooocus.patch, of approximately 1.28 GB. Plan for that download before treating the application as fully offline. Download only from a verifiable official source.
7. Easy Diffusion
Easy Diffusion provides a one-click local installation with a browser interface. Its documented features include text-to-image, image-to-image, SDXL, ControlNet, model merging, custom VAEs, textual inversion, task queues, live previews, and model scanning. The project describes a 3.0 interface and a v4 engine with support for additional model types including Flux 1 and 2, Z-Image, Lumina, and quantized models.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Its model scanning and preference for safetensors are useful safeguards, but they do not make every download trustworthy. A model repository may include scripts, custom dependencies, or instructions that alter the risk. Avoid running unknown installers with administrator privileges.
8. Krita AI Diffusion
Krita AI Diffusion places generation inside a painting workflow, which is valuable when the output is only one layer in a larger piece. You can work with sketches, masks, selections, and edits rather than exporting every stage to a separate application.
The plug-in uses ComfyUI as its backend. Its model database covers checkpoints, ControlNets, IP-Adapters, upscalers, LoRAs, text encoders, VAEs, and inpainting models, each of which must be placed in the expected ComfyUI directories. A missing file, incorrect filename, or required custom node can cause a model or workflow to fail.
Krita can be used locally, but “local” does not guarantee that every component is offline. Krita identifies network access from features such as its newsfeed and G’Mic plug-in, while model managers and plug-ins may also connect to the internet.
9. DiffusionBee
DiffusionBee is a packaged macOS application offering text-to-image, image-to-image, generative fill, upscaling, Control Images, video tools, and local model training. The vendor states that local generation keeps prompts, models, and generated images on the device, and lists macOS 13.1 or later as the minimum requirement.
Evaluate optional cloud features, model downloads, updates, and integrations separately from the core local-generation claim. The interface license and the model license are also separate questions; DiffusionBee references the CreativeML Open RAIL-M license for some of its model use.
10. Draw Things
Draw Things runs locally on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and supports a wide selection of models, including SDXL, FLUX.1, Wan 2.2, Qwen Image, Z Image, FLUX.2, and LTX-2.3, according to its current App Store listing. It is a practical choice when a painter wants to block out ideas on a tablet without sending every source sketch to a hosted image service.
Do not confuse local creation with the optional Cloud Compute feature. Its privacy policy says account creation is optional for cloud features and that uploaded LoRAs are stored on cloud servers. Check which mode is active before using private reference photographs or client material.

11. Mochi Diffusion
Mochi Diffusion is a native macOS application built around Apple Core ML. It supports local, offline generation, image-to-image workflows, ControlNet, custom Core ML models, and EXIF prompt metadata. Current documentation lists Apple Silicon M1 or later and macOS 15.6 or later.
The first generation with a model can take up to about two minutes while the Neural Engine compiles a cached version. Later generations should be faster. Model placement is strict: Core ML and FLUX.2 Klein models must use the directory structure expected by the application.

12. NMKD Stable Diffusion GUI
NMKD Stable Diffusion GUI is a Windows-oriented local application distributed through the developer’s itch.io page. Its packaged approach may appeal to users who do not want to assemble a Python environment.
It is the weakest choice for a “latest tools” comparison unless you verify the downloadable build and release date directly. Older guides may describe controls, model support, or installation steps that do not match the current version. Treat any bundled executable as software requiring normal download hygiene and malware scanning.
Privacy and security risks to check before generating
Local does not always mean offline
A local interface may still download models, check for updates, display a newsfeed, install plug-ins, collect analytics, authenticate an account, or offer cloud rendering. If privacy matters, review the application’s policy, disable optional cloud functions, and use an operating-system firewall or network monitor to understand connections.
Images can carry your prompt and project details
PNG, EXIF, and application-specific metadata may reveal prompts, seeds, model names, dimensions, or workflow information. InvokeAI canvas projects can also contain layers, masks, reference images, and generation parameters. Before sharing a sensitive image or project, make a copy and explicitly remove metadata or inspect the archive rather than assuming editing or export removed it. The exact result depends on the application and file format.
Model files and custom nodes are part of the attack surface
safetensors avoids the specific arbitrary-code risk associated with loading pickle-based model files, but it does not make a repository, installer, custom node, or dependency trustworthy. ComfyUI custom nodes are executable Python. Download from a source with verifiable provenance, pin or record versions, and avoid executing setup scripts as an administrator.
Network exposure changes the threat model
A service bound to 127.0.0.1 is intended to be reachable only from the same machine. Binding it to another address, forwarding a port, or using an unsecured tunnel can expose the interface and its files to other devices. Remote access should use authentication, firewall restrictions, and network isolation.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful first check |
|---|---|---|
| Missing checkpoint, LoRA, VAE, or ControlNet | Wrong directory, filename mismatch, or absent custom node | Compare the workflow’s required names with the application’s model folders |
| Weighted prompt appears ignored | Prompt syntax is not supported by that model family | Check the model-specific prompting documentation |
| CUDA out-of-memory error | Resolution, batch size, ControlNet stack, LoRAs, or model size is too high | Lower resolution and batch count, then test without ControlNet or LoRAs |
| Workflow opens with red or missing nodes | Custom node is not installed, has changed, or is incompatible | Identify the node package and install only from a trusted source |
| First generation is unusually slow | Model compilation or shader/Neural Engine caching | Run a second generation before judging performance |
| Private material appears in a cloud account | Cloud mode, remote model, or optional integration was enabled | Check the active compute mode and network policy before importing files |
Responsible use for painting and reference work
- Use local generation for confidential sketches only after confirming that cloud, analytics, and update features are disabled or understood.
- Do not upload identifiable faces, medical images, identity documents, private photographs, or client artwork without permission and a clear retention policy.
- Obtain consent before using a real person’s likeness, especially for sexualized, defamatory, political, or commercial imagery.
- Do not create or distribute sexual exploitation material involving minors, non-consensual intimate imagery, fraud, impersonation, harassment, or illegal content. Removing a provider filter does not remove these legal and ethical consequences; Stability AI’s policy also prohibits specified prohibited uses for self-hosted Stability technology.
- Check the model license separately from the interface license. A free or open-source UI does not grant commercial rights to every checkpoint or output.
- Keep a record of the model version, prompt, source images, LoRAs, ControlNets, and editing steps for commissioned or high-impact work.
- Label materially synthetic or altered images when viewers could reasonably mistake them for documentary evidence or an unedited photograph.
- Flatten or strip sensitive metadata before delivery, while retaining a private production record if reproducibility matters.
FAQ
Does unrestricted mean that an AI image generator allows anything?
No. It generally describes the absence of a centralized prompt filter, especially in local software. Model licenses, privacy rights, publicity rights, copyright rules, criminal law, and platform policies still apply. Some model providers’ acceptable-use policies apply to self-hosted technology as well.
Which local generator is best for painters?
Krita AI Diffusion is the most natural fit for layer-based painting, masking, and selections. InvokeAI is strong for canvas workflows, while ComfyUI is better for repeatable technical pipelines. The best choice also depends on your operating system, GPU, and preferred model.
Are local AI image generators completely private?
Not automatically. Local generation can coexist with model downloads, update checks, plug-ins, telemetry, newsfeeds, cloud modes, and embedded metadata. Confirm the active data path and inspect exported files before sharing them.
Is safetensors enough to make downloaded AI models safe?
No. It avoids the specific pickle deserialization problem, but custom nodes, installers, scripts, dependencies, and compromised repositories can still be dangerous. Download from trusted sources and avoid running unknown code with administrator privileges.
The Bottom Line
For a painter, “unrestricted” is most useful as a privacy and workflow distinction, not as a promise of consequence-free generation. Start with Krita AI Diffusion or InvokeAI if the work revolves around sketches, masks, and compositing; choose ComfyUI when repeatability and complex graphs matter; consider packaged tools such as DiffusionBee or Draw Things when setup simplicity is more important than control.
Whichever tool you use, verify the model license, keep local servers private, treat custom nodes as executable software, inspect metadata, and obtain consent for real people’s likenesses. Local control gives you more responsibility along with more flexibility.
