To save a clipboard image as a JPG or PNG, paste it into an image editor and use that program’s Save as or Export command. Choose PNG for screenshots, line art, or transparency, and JPG for photographs when a smaller file matters.
Choose PNG or JPG first

Use PNG when you want to preserve the copied pixels. This is particularly useful for a reference image containing fine drawing lines, color notes, or a transparent cutout. Use JPG for a photographic reference that will be easier to store or send as a smaller file. Do not repeatedly export a JPG if image quality matters; each lossy export can introduce additional artifacts.
Save a clipboard image as a JPG or PNG in Windows Paint
- Copy the image. If you are copying part of your screen, press Windows + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, and select the area.
- Open Paint from the Start menu.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the clipboard image.
- Select File in the upper-left corner.
- Point to Save as.
- Choose PNG picture or JPEG picture.
- Pick a folder, type a filename, and select Save.
For a painting reference, a useful filename might be landscape-reference-sunset.png or portrait-lighting-study.jpg. Saving through Paint’s format menu performs the conversion. Merely renaming image.png to image.jpg does not convert the image and can leave you with a file whose extension does not match its actual contents.

Use Snipping Tool instead
After capturing an area with Windows + Shift + S, select the notification that appears. The image opens in Snipping Tool, where you can make edits and select the Save button. If you need to choose between JPG and PNG explicitly, paste the capture into Paint and use File > Save as.

Save a clipboard image as a JPG or PNG on a Mac
macOS Preview can create a new image directly from the clipboard:
- Copy the image.
- Open Preview.
- Choose File > New from Clipboard.
- Choose File > Export.
- Open the Format menu and select JPEG or PNG.
- Enter a filename and choose a destination folder.
- Select Save.
If the image is already open in Preview and you only want part of it, select the area, choose Edit > Copy, then choose File > New from Clipboard. Preview creates a new document containing only that selection, which is handy when cropping a reference before bringing it into a painting program.
Preview normally shows common formats such as JPEG and PNG in its export menu. If you need to reveal additional formats, hold Option while opening the Format menu.

Save it with GIMP on Linux
GIMP imports clipboard images into an editable image document. Use Export As for JPG or PNG rather than the normal project-saving command, which is intended for GIMP’s XCF format.
- Copy the image to the clipboard.
- Open GIMP.
- Choose File > Create > From Clipboard, or press Shift + Ctrl + V.
- Choose File > Export As.
- Type a filename ending in .png or .jpg.
- Select Export.
- If exporting as JPG, choose the desired quality in the JPEG export dialog, then select Export again.
GIMP’s JPEG quality setting runs from 0 to 100. A higher value generally retains more detail and produces a larger file. For a photographic painting reference, a high setting is usually appropriate; for line art or transparent artwork, export PNG instead.
Chromebook: check the Downloads folder first
ChromeOS screenshots are automatically copied to the clipboard and saved in the Chromebook’s Downloads folder. Open the Files app and look there before trying to recreate the capture.

To change the screenshot destination:
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- Select Settings in the screen-capture toolbar.
- Select Select folder.
- Choose the folder where future captures should be saved.
For an image already in Downloads, open it with an image editor that provides an export or format-selection command. Choose JPG or PNG in that editor, rather than simply changing the extension in the Files app.
Why paste does nothing
The clipboard may contain text, a web link, HTML, or another data type instead of bitmap image data. Copy the image itself—not the page address or surrounding text—and try again. Then paste into Paint, Preview, or GIMP.
Some websites and applications also copy only a rendered preview or a reduced-resolution version. Exporting that clipboard image as PNG will preserve the pixels you received, but it cannot restore detail that was never copied. If the original image is available, downloading or exporting the original is preferable for a large painting reference.

Recover an image that was replaced on the clipboard
The ordinary clipboard holds temporary content. Copying another item normally replaces the previous image. On Windows, press Windows + V to open clipboard history. If it is your first time using the feature, choose Turn on.
Windows clipboard history supports up to 25 entries, and unpinned entries are cleared when the computer restarts. It also has a 4 MB per-item limit documented by Microsoft, so a large copied image may not appear in history even when ordinary paste works. Save the image immediately when it matters, rather than relying on clipboard history as long-term storage.

Quick recommendation for artists
For a screenshot, line drawing, color chart, or transparent cutout, paste it into your editor and export PNG. For a photographic reference that is taking up too much storage, export JPG at a high quality setting. Keep the original clipboard image or source file until you have opened the saved file and checked its dimensions, colors, transparency, and sharpness.

FAQ
Can I save a clipboard image directly as a JPG or PNG?
Usually not from the clipboard itself. Paste it into Paint, Preview, GIMP, or another image editor, then use that program’s Save as or Export command to create the JPG or PNG file.
Why does changing .png to .jpg not work?
Changing the filename extension only changes the label. It does not convert the image data. Use Paint’s File > Save as, Preview’s File > Export, or GIMP’s File > Export As and select the desired format.
Should I use JPG or PNG for a painting reference?
Use PNG for screenshots, line work, diagrams, text, logos, and transparent images. Use JPG for photographs when a smaller file is more important than perfect, lossless quality.

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background color during export. Save the image as PNG to retain transparent areas.
The Bottom Line
Paste the clipboard image into an image editor and export it—use PNG for sharp artwork or transparency, and JPG for smaller photographic references. Do not rely on renaming the file extension; the editor must perform the conversion.
