The right choice depends on four things: how much audience you already have, whether you want to own the customer relationship, where your buyers live, and whether you want to make products yourself or outsource production and shipping.

Quick comparison: the best merch website for each type of creator

These platforms do not all perform the same job. Some are print-on-demand fulfillment providers, some are creator storefronts, and some are marketplaces that bring their own shopper traffic. Comparing them as if they were identical can lead to the wrong choice.

Platform Best for Storefront type Fulfillment model Marketplace discovery Main trade-off
Fourthwall Creators with an established community Branded creator storefront Print-on-demand, limited drops, and creator-commerce services Low to moderate; you generally bring the audience Convenience comes with product, processing, shipping, tax, and fee variables
Printful Consistent fulfillment and white-label branding Fulfillment layer connected to your store Print-on-demand with no inventory or order minimums Low; it is not primarily a consumer marketplace You must create or connect the storefront and generate traffic
Printify Product and supplier experimentation Fulfillment layer connected to your store Print-on-demand through a network of print providers Low Quality, production time, and shipping can vary by provider
Gelato International audiences Fulfillment layer connected to your store Distributed production routed toward local partners Low Regional availability and results depend on destination and partner
Spring Social-first creators and streamers Creator storefront with social integrations Fulfillment, shipping, and support handled through the platform Low; social distribution is the main advantage Channel eligibility and features vary by platform and geography
Redbubble Artists seeking marketplace exposure Artist marketplace profile Third-party production and shipping partners High relative to owned-store tools Less control over branding, customer data, and fulfillment
TeePublic Simple apparel-focused marketplace selling Artist marketplace profile Third-party fulfillment centers High relative to owned-store tools Marketplace dependence limits operational control
Shopify A fully owned merch business Owned ecommerce store Chosen through POD apps or other suppliers Low by itself; supports many sales channels More setup, apps, subscriptions, and ongoing management
Big Cartel Small catalogs and independent artists Simple owned storefront Handled by the seller or connected services Low Less extensive than Shopify for advanced automation and integrations
Society6 Art prints, wall art, and lifestyle decor Artist marketplace Manufacturing, shipping, and support handled by Society6 Moderate to high Its current earning structure offers less markup control than some alternatives
Etsy Original, personalized, handmade, and niche products Seller marketplace shop Seller-made, handmade, or production-partner-supported High Design, production-partner, and anti-reselling rules must be followed
Amazon Merch on Demand Amazon-distributed graphic apparel Amazon marketplace program Amazon prints and ships eligible products High Access, content rules, products, and royalties are controlled by the program
Amazon Handmade Makers and artisan businesses Amazon marketplace program Usually seller-led production and fulfillment High Application and maker requirements make it different from ordinary POD

Platform catalogs, fees, earnings, eligibility, fulfillment coverage, and program terms change. Treat figures below as platform-reported or time-sensitive information, not permanent guarantees.

1. Fourthwall: best all-in-one creator merch storefront

Fourthwall is the strongest fit for a YouTuber, streamer, musician, or artist who wants one branded destination for merchandise and community income. It combines a no-code custom website builder with print-on-demand products, limited-run drops, memberships, and donations. Its creator-oriented integrations include YouTube Merch Shelf, Twitch, Discord, and other channels, according to Fourthwall’s published materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination is the key advantage. Instead of separately arranging a store, a fulfillment service, a membership system, and a tip page, a creator can consolidate much of that activity in one place. It is particularly attractive when fans already know where to find you and the store’s primary job is to convert that existing attention.

Fourthwall reports a 2.9% + $0.30 payment-processing fee for US credit-card transactions. That is not the same as your complete cost of sale: product base cost, shipping, taxes, refunds, and any applicable platform charges still need to be included in your pricing model. Verify the current fee schedule and regional terms before publishing prices.

Choose Fourthwall if: you already have a community, want a fast setup, and value memberships, donations, and social integrations alongside physical merch.

Think twice if: you want maximum control over every store function, need built-in marketplace search traffic, or plan to compare multiple fulfillment suppliers product by product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Printful: best for controlled fulfillment and branding

Printful is a print-on-demand fulfillment provider rather than a shopper marketplace. You connect it to an ecommerce channel such as Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, or another supported store; when a customer orders, Printful produces and ships the item without requiring you to hold inventory or meet an order minimum.

It is a strong choice for artists who care about consistent brand presentation. Printful describes its fulfillment as white-label and highlights in-house production, quality control, global fulfillment, sample ordering, and a catalog of more than 500 customizable products on its current product materials. Its catalog includes apparel and accessories as well as products suitable for art-led stores.

Sample ordering is especially important when your reputation is attached to the product. A digital mockup cannot tell you how an illustration looks on a particular fabric, whether colors reproduce as expected, how large the print feels in person, or what packaging the customer will receive. Printful’s controlled production model can simplify that evaluation, although you should still judge the actual sample rather than relying only on a platform claim.

Printful does not provide the same built-in consumer discovery as Redbubble or TeePublic. You are usually responsible for the storefront, product photography or mockups, audience-building, search visibility, and marketing. That is a disadvantage for a new artist with no traffic, but an advantage for someone building a recognizable brand on owned channels.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Printful if: consistent fulfillment, white-label presentation, samples, and integration with an owned store matter more than marketplace exposure.

Important affiliate note: Printful publicly documents an affiliate program for bloggers, YouTubers, marketers, agencies, and independent creators. Its published terms describe a 10% revenue share, a 12-month earning period for each referred customer, a 30-day cookie, and a possible $25 bonus for a first-time Growth subscription. Those terms can change and may be subject to approval, so check the current program terms before relying on them.

3. Printify: best for supplier variety and product experimentation

Printify is useful when you want to test many products, suppliers, and price points. Its design tools and catalog cover familiar items such as shirts, hoodies, mugs, stickers, phone cases, posters, bags, and other merchandise. Rather than relying on one standardized production network, Printify connects sellers with a network of print providers.

That network model can give you more flexibility. You may find a better fit for a particular garment, decoration method, destination, or price target by comparing providers. It also makes Printify appealing for testing a niche: you can try several product formats before deciding which one deserves a permanent place in your shop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is variability. Two providers may produce the same nominal product with differences in print quality, color, sizing, packaging, production time, and shipping. Before launching a flagship product, order samples from the specific provider you intend to use and compare the result with your artwork, product description, and promised delivery window.

Choose Printify if: catalog breadth and supplier experimentation are more important than a single standardized fulfillment experience.

Think twice if: you do not have time to vet providers, maintain product listings, and monitor changes in production or shipping performance.

4. Gelato: best for international and locally routed fulfillment

Gelato is designed around distributed production. Its current product materials describe more than 140 print partners in 32 countries, with 90% of orders produced locally and 90% arriving within five days. Those are Gelato’s own reported network figures and should not be treated as a guarantee for every product, country, or order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The appeal for a globally distributed audience is straightforward: orders may be routed toward a nearby production partner instead of traveling across borders from one central location. That can make Gelato worth investigating if your buyers are spread across North America, Europe, Asia, or other regions and shipping distance is a recurring problem.

Gelato supports integrations including Shopify and Etsy. However, local production does not eliminate all uncertainty. Product availability, local partner capability, customs conditions, destination, seasonal demand, and the specific item ordered can affect the actual result. Regional samples and a destination-by-destination shipping review are still necessary.

Choose Gelato if: international fulfillment and the possibility of locally routed production are central to your store strategy.

Think twice if: your business depends on one exact product, one exact production process, or a single globally consistent packaging experience that you have not verified in each target market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Spring: best for social-first creator selling

Spring, formerly associated with Teespring, is built around turning social attention into merchandise sales. Its creator materials promote storefronts, fulfillment, shipping, customer support, digital products, and more than 180 physical products. It also promotes integrations with social platforms including YouTube and TikTok.

This makes Spring a practical option for creators who want a relatively simple store connected to the places where their audience already watches and interacts. A streamer or short-form video creator may value that social-first distribution more than the broader ecommerce control offered by Shopify.

Spring’s YouTube documentation says eligible creators can use a YouTube merch shelf and channel store, but eligibility is not universal. The requirements referenced by Spring include monetization approval, a 10,000-plus-subscriber threshold, and other conditions. Requirements can vary by channel, geography, and program status, so do not promise that every creator can activate the feature.

Choose Spring if: your audience is concentrated on social platforms and you want fulfillment and social selling tools without assembling a larger ecommerce stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice if: you need a highly customized store, advanced customer ownership, or features that are restricted by your channel or country.

6. Redbubble: best for marketplace discovery for independent artists

Redbubble is an artist marketplace: you upload designs, apply them to products, and rely on Redbubble and third-party production partners for production and shipping. Redbubble says artists can sell across more than 70 products and reach a global audience. Its company materials also report that the platform connects more than 700,000 artists and designers with millions of fans. These are Redbubble’s own reported figures, not an independent market measurement.

Its biggest benefit is discovery. An illustrator without an established mailing list or social following can place work in a marketplace where shoppers are already browsing for designs. That lowers the operational burden compared with running a complete store, because you do not need to arrange fulfillment, shipping, and customer support yourself.

The cost of that simplicity is control. You have less influence over the full storefront experience, customer relationship, fulfillment process, and merchandising environment than you would with an owned store. Review current artist terms, account rules, and earning conditions before uploading a large catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Redbubble if: you are an independent artist and built-in marketplace exposure matters more than owning the customer journey.

Think twice if: your long-term goal is a tightly controlled brand with direct customer data, custom email marketing, and a distinctive shopping experience.

7. TeePublic: best for simple artist-marketplace apparel

TeePublic is a straightforward marketplace for independent creators selling merchandise featuring their artwork. It uses third-party fulfillment centers, and TeePublic says its production team establishes quality standards for participating printers.

The platform is especially easy to understand for graphic artists and illustrators who want to upload designs and participate in an existing apparel-centered marketplace rather than build a complete ecommerce operation. You can focus on creating and presenting designs while the marketplace handles much of the transaction and fulfillment infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As with Redbubble, marketplace dependence is the central trade-off. You have less control over customer data, fulfillment choices, packaging, and the overall store experience. It can be a useful distribution channel, but it should not automatically be treated as a replacement for an owned brand.

Choose TeePublic if: you want a low-complexity marketplace focused on apparel and related merchandise.

  • Customize your printable heat transfer paper using Avery Design & Print Online with your own images, logos, and text, or choose from the available templates and designs

Think twice if: you need extensive customization, direct customer ownership, or complete control over production and post-purchase communication.

8. Shopify: best for a fully owned merch business

Shopify is not a printer or fulfillment company. It is the commerce layer: you build the store, choose your apps and suppliers, manage the brand, and connect the business to sales channels. Shopify’s current print-on-demand materials say merchants can connect suppliers, sell without holding inventory, integrate with social channels and marketplaces, and choose from more than 200 POD apps. It specifically highlights integrations with Printful, Printify, and Gelato.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the most flexible option on the list for a creator building a serious, owned merch business. You can control the domain, design, product organization, analytics, email marketing, promotions, product drops, and customer experience more extensively than on an artist marketplace. Musicians may also find Shopify relevant because Shopify documents a connection between Shopify stores and Spotify for Artists merch areas.

Flexibility creates work and cost. The total expense may include a Shopify plan, payment processing, apps, fulfillment or supplier charges, shipping, taxes, refunds, samples, customer support, and marketing. You must also maintain product data, troubleshoot integrations, and make sure inventory or fulfillment statuses remain accurate.

Choose Shopify if: you want to own the brand and customer relationship, run product drops, build an email list, and sell across multiple channels.

Think twice if: you want a nearly finished creator store or do not yet have enough product and audience activity to justify ongoing setup and management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopify also has creator-partnership functionality through Shopify Collabs, but its current help documentation says new creator signups for Collabs Discover are not being accepted. Existing partnerships and merchant invitations may continue, so do not assume that a new creator can enroll under the same conditions.

9. Big Cartel: best for simple artist-owned stores

Big Cartel is aimed at makers, artists, curators, and independent sellers who want a focused ecommerce storefront. Its physical-products materials highlight storefront creation, inventory management, shipping labels, online and in-person selling, and no listing fees or commission.

For an artist selling a small catalog of prints, handmade objects, or limited merchandise drops, that lighter approach can be more appealing than Shopify’s larger ecosystem. You can operate an owned shop without needing the breadth of enterprise-style tools or a large app stack.

The limitation is also its defining characteristic: Big Cartel is intentionally lighter. Advanced POD workflows, marketing automation, analytics, integrations, and operational complexity may require additional tools or may not be as extensive as they are in Shopify’s ecosystem. Check current plans and integrations against your actual workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Big Cartel if: you want an owned storefront, have a focused catalog, and value simplicity over advanced automation.

Think twice if: you expect complex product configurations, extensive multichannel operations, or a large app ecosystem.

10. Society6: best for art prints and lifestyle home decor

Society6 is particularly well suited to visual artists whose work translates into wall art, decor, and lifestyle products. Its artist materials describe art prints, framed prints, canvas prints, apparel, bags, tech accessories, and home-decor products. Society6 handles manufacturing, shipping, and customer support.

That focus makes it a natural fit for illustrators, photographers, pattern designers, and painters who want their work presented as art-led products rather than only as logo apparel. It also provides marketplace exposure without requiring the artist to run production and shipping personally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay close attention to the earning structure. Society6 changed its artist-earning model effective March 18, 2025, including standardized pricing and removal of artists’ ability to set their own markup percentages for products. Current earnings terms and product-specific rules should be checked before you make Society6 a major revenue channel.

Choose Society6 if: your strongest products are prints, framed art, canvas, decor, and lifestyle goods.

Think twice if: you need to set your own markup freely or want complete control over pricing and the customer relationship.

11. Etsy: best for original, personalized, and handmade merchandise

Etsy is a strong option for original designs, personalized products, handmade goods, art prints, custom apparel, and niche gifts. Under Etsy’s Creativity Standards, items may be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by sellers. Etsy explicitly allows a seller’s original design to be produced or printed onto a physical item by a third-party production partner, provided the seller follows the disclosure requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. Etsy can support print-on-demand merchandise when the creative work belongs to the seller and the production arrangement is properly disclosed. It is not a general-purpose channel for generic dropshipping or reselling. Designs, production partners, product descriptions, and shop practices must comply with Etsy’s policies.

  • Screen Printing Squeegees: 2 different sizes squeegees are easy operation and offer a stable printing effect for different sizes of frames. 9.4 and 5.9 inches. The 9.4 inch squeegees can cover the entire screen, while the 5.9 inch allow for single-handed use, making them great for printing smaller pattern
  • Inkjet Transparency Film: A4 size transparency film is widely applied in silk screen printing, which can help you transfer the pattern you design
  • Practical Accessories: 10 pieces of wood sticks and an ink knife for smoothly mixing and transferring ink and emulsion. Masking tape is easy to peel and tear, leaving no marks upon removal, and effectively provides protection for silk screen projects
  • Multiple Use: You can print patterns on T-shirts, canvas tote bags, and tank tops with this screen printing starter kit. This is a great family activity for beginners or people that’s doing it at home.

Etsy’s marketplace search can be valuable for an artist who has a product with clear buyer intent, such as a personalized print, custom gift, original art design, or niche apparel item. The marketplace also brings policy and competition constraints that you would not face in exactly the same way on your own site.

Choose Etsy if: you sell original, personalized, handmade, or production-partner-supported products that fit Etsy’s rules.

Think twice if: your model depends on generic products, undisclosed third-party production, or reselling items you did not design or make.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Amazon Merch on Demand: best for Amazon marketplace distribution

Amazon Merch on Demand lets approved creators submit artwork for graphic apparel and related products while Amazon handles printing and shipping. Amazon’s seller guidance describes graphic tees, accessories, and other products as use cases, with creators receiving royalties from sales.

The attraction is Amazon’s marketplace distribution. If your work fits the program and is accepted, you do not need to operate a separate storefront or arrange fulfillment for each design. The platform-controlled model can be useful for creators who want to test Amazon as an additional distribution channel.

Do not assume that enrollment is open to everyone. Access, product availability, royalty schedules, content rules, and account requirements should be verified in the current program interface and documentation. Amazon Merch on Demand is not the same thing as owning a standalone creator store, and there is no basis for promising approval, a specific royalty rate, or a particular catalog.

Choose Amazon Merch on Demand if: Amazon reach is important and you are comfortable with a platform-controlled design, approval, and royalty model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice if: you need a branded store, direct customer ownership, guaranteed enrollment, or control over fulfillment and pricing.

13. Amazon Handmade: best for maker-led physical merchandise

Amazon Handmade is aimed at makers and artisans rather than ordinary automated print-on-demand. Amazon’s art-selling guidance describes it as a maker-only community for sellers of creative works from more than 80 countries. It requires an application.

This can suit an artist producing handmade, customized, or artisan merchandise: hand-painted goods, crafted accessories, made-to-order objects, or other products where the making process is central to the offer. The seller’s production, inventory, customization, and fulfillment responsibilities depend on the product and selling setup.

Amazon Handmade should not be confused with Merch on Demand. Merch on Demand is designed around Amazon-printed products bearing submitted artwork; Handmade is designed around maker-led physical goods. Pick the program based on how the item is actually produced, not simply on the fact that it carries your artwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Amazon Handmade if: you make customized or artisan products and are prepared to apply and meet the program’s maker requirements.

Think twice if: you want fully automated POD fulfillment for ordinary graphic apparel.

Fulfillment provider, storefront, or marketplace: understand the difference

Print-on-demand fulfillment providers

Printful, Printify, and Gelato are primarily fulfillment solutions. They produce items after a customer orders and connect to another sales channel. They are best when you want to build the storefront and brand yourself, but do not want to buy inventory in advance.

  • Printful: prioritize controlled presentation, white-label fulfillment, samples, and consistency.
  • Printify: prioritize supplier choice, catalog breadth, and experimentation.
  • Gelato: prioritize international reach and potentially local production.

Creator-native storefronts

Fourthwall and Spring are designed around creators who already have attention on social or community platforms. They reduce the number of systems you need to assemble and can connect merchandise with memberships, donations, social integrations, or digital products.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Owned ecommerce stores

Shopify and Big Cartel give you a storefront you control more directly. Shopify is the broader and more extensible system; Big Cartel is the simpler fit for a focused catalog. Either way, you must take more responsibility for traffic, store management, customer communication, and the connected fulfillment setup.

Artist and maker marketplaces

Redbubble, TeePublic, Society6, Etsy, Amazon Merch on Demand, and Amazon Handmade put your products inside established marketplaces or programs. They may provide discovery, but you accept more platform rules and less control over the customer relationship. Etsy and Amazon Handmade also impose important creative or maker requirements that make them unsuitable for generic reselling.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How to choose based on your situation

If you already have an audience

Start with Fourthwall or Spring when speed, social integrations, memberships, and creator-native features are more important than building a complex store. Choose Printful or Printify behind Shopify or another owned channel when you want more control over the brand and customer journey.

If you have little or no audience

Marketplace discovery may matter more than storefront ownership at the beginning. Redbubble and TeePublic are the simplest places to test whether designs attract attention. Society6 is more compelling when the work is suited to wall art and decor. Etsy can work when the product has a clear original, personalized, handmade, or niche-gift angle.

If you want to build a long-term brand

Favor an owned store, usually Shopify for breadth or Big Cartel for simplicity, and connect an appropriate fulfillment provider. This requires more work, but it gives you greater control over the domain, presentation, product launches, analytics, email marketing, and customer experience.

If your customers are international

Investigate Gelato first, then compare it with Printful or Printify for the specific products and countries you serve. Do not choose based only on a network-wide percentage or a headline delivery claim. Check regional product availability, shipping costs, production times, duties, and samples.

If you sell paintings, illustrations, or photography

Society6 may be a better product match than an apparel-first marketplace if your work looks strongest as framed prints, canvas, wall decor, or lifestyle goods. Printful, Printify, or Gelato can support a more controlled art-print store, while Etsy is useful for original or personalized items that meet its policies.

If you make products yourself

Big Cartel, Etsy, or Amazon Handmade may fit better than an automated POD service. Amazon Handmade is specifically maker-oriented, while Etsy supports a mixture of handmade, original-design, and properly disclosed production-partner products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare total landed cost, not just the product price

A platform’s advertised base price is only one part of your margin. Before setting a retail price, calculate:

  • Product or production cost
  • Shipping and possible international delivery charges
  • Taxes, duties, and tax-collection responsibilities
  • Payment-processing fees
  • Platform commissions, subscriptions, or applicable transaction fees
  • App, design, branding, or integration charges
  • Sample orders and replacement samples
  • Refunds, damaged orders, replacements, and chargebacks
  • Customer-support time
  • Advertising, creator commissions, and other costs of acquiring a buyer

A simple planning formula is:

Estimated contribution = retail price − product cost − shipping subsidy − payment fees − platform fees − tax-related cost − expected refunds and replacements

Do not label a platform the cheapest, most profitable, or highest-margin option without a dated, controlled comparison. Fees and earnings can change, and the same platform may produce very different results depending on product, country, payment method, and store plan.

Order samples before promoting a product

Samples are not an optional luxury for an artist-led merch business. Order the exact product and fulfillment route you plan to sell, then inspect:

  1. Artwork reproduction: Check color, sharpness, placement, scale, and whether fine details survive the production method.
  2. Material and sizing: Confirm fabric weight, finish, dimensions, and whether the item matches your product copy.
  3. Durability: Follow the care instructions and assess whether the print or decoration behaves as expected.
  4. Packaging: Look for damage protection, branding, packing slips, and the customer’s likely unboxing experience.
  5. Delivery: Record the production and shipping time to each major region you serve.
  6. Provider consistency: If a network model is involved, sample the specific Printify provider or regional partner you intend to use.

Printful promotes sample ordering and quality control. With Printify, the need to sample is even more important because production is distributed across providers. Gelato’s local-routing model also warrants regional checks because the partner and available product can differ by destination.

No independent physical product testing was conducted for this guide. The platform descriptions above distinguish researched capabilities and platform-reported information from firsthand quality or delivery findings.

Before you upload: a practical launch checklist

  • Define the product: Decide whether you are selling apparel, art prints, wall decor, accessories, handmade goods, digital products, or a combination.
  • Define the audience: Identify whether sales will come from your existing community, marketplace search, social content, email, search engines, or paid advertising.
  • Check rights: Use artwork, fonts, logos, characters, slogans, and photographs that you own or are licensed to sell. Popular fan art is not automatically safe to commercialize.
  • Choose the operating model: Pick an owned store, creator storefront, marketplace, or a combination rather than treating every platform as interchangeable.
  • Read current terms: Confirm fees, payout rules, content restrictions, account requirements, regional availability, production-partner rules, and cancellation policies.
  • Order samples: Test the real product, not just a mockup.
  • Write accurate listings: Include materials, measurements, care instructions, production time, shipping estimates, and return information.
  • Price from landed cost: Include processing, platform, shipping, tax, replacement, and marketing costs.
  • Plan customer support: Decide who handles delivery problems, damaged items, wrong sizes, refunds, and address changes.
  • Start with a small collection: Test a few strong designs and products before creating a large catalog.
  • Review performance: Track conversion, returns, customer questions, delivery problems, and contribution per order—not just sales volume.

Which platform should you start with?

For most artists, the best first move is not choosing the platform with the longest product list. It is choosing the smallest system that lets you validate demand without creating avoidable operational problems.

Use Fourthwall when you have an audience and want an all-in-one creator hub. Use Printful when fulfillment consistency and brand presentation are priorities. Use Printify when you want to compare suppliers and experiment. Use Gelato when international fulfillment is central. Use Redbubble or TeePublic when you need marketplace discovery. Use Shopify for maximum ownership and extensibility, or Big Cartel for a smaller, simpler store. Use Society6 for art-led decor, Etsy for compliant original or personalized goods, Amazon Merch on Demand for Amazon-distributed graphic apparel, and Amazon Handmade for products you actually make.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best merch website for an artist with no audience?

Redbubble or TeePublic are the simplest starting points when marketplace discovery matters more than owning a storefront. Society6 is worth considering for art prints and decor, while Etsy can work for original, personalized, handmade, or niche products that comply with its policies. Marketplace traffic is not guaranteed, so treat the first listings as a demand test rather than a promise of income.

What is the difference between Printful, Printify, and Gelato?

All three can support print-on-demand fulfillment, but their operating models differ. Printful emphasizes controlled, white-label fulfillment and in-house production. Printify connects sellers with a network of print providers, giving more supplier variety but requiring more sampling and comparison. Gelato emphasizes distributed production and local routing for international orders; actual availability and delivery depend on the destination and production partner.

Is Etsy a print-on-demand website?

Etsy is a marketplace, not a print-on-demand manufacturer. It permits a seller’s original design to be produced by a disclosed third-party production partner where the arrangement meets Etsy’s rules. Generic dropshipping, undisclosed production, and reselling products you did not design or make can violate Etsy policies.

Is Fourthwall better than Shopify for creator merch?

Fourthwall is usually easier when an established creator wants a fast, integrated storefront with memberships, donations, and social-channel features. Shopify is generally better for an artist building a more independent ecommerce business with deeper control over branding, analytics, email marketing, apps, product drops, and customer relationships. The better option depends on how much operational control you need.

Do I need to order samples before selling art merchandise?

Yes. Samples let you verify color, scale, print quality, materials, sizing, packaging, and delivery time. Sampling is particularly important with supplier-network models such as Printify, where different providers can produce noticeably different results. Regional sampling can also matter with Gelato’s distributed fulfillment model.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick the platform that matches your business model, not the one with the most impressive headline feature. Fourthwall and Spring are efficient for audience-led creator selling; Printful, Printify, and Gelato are fulfillment choices for an owned store; Redbubble and TeePublic provide marketplace discovery; Society6 is built around art and decor; Etsy and Amazon Handmade suit original or maker-led goods; and Shopify or Big Cartel give you more ownership. Before committing, sample the product, calculate total landed cost, check current terms, and start with a small collection.
