To improve Midjourney V7 results, describe the image you want in clear, concise terms, choose the right reference tool for the job, and change one setting at a time. V7 remains selectable, but Midjourney documentation says V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026; select V7 explicitly when following this guide.
Before you start: select V7
Midjourney released V7 on April 3, 2025. Its documentation says V8.2 became the default version on July 24, 2026, so V7 is not the default. Select V7 in the model selector or add –v 7 where supported, and check the current interface labels because version status and controls can change.
Midjourney introduced Draft Mode and Omni Reference with V7. The company describes V7 as more precise with text and image prompts and as producing richer textures and more coherent details; these are Midjourney’s product characterizations, not independent comparative test results.

These are product settings documented by Midjourney, not guarantees of a particular result. Test one change at a time so you can tell what affected the output.
1. Name the subject plainly
Begin with the person, object, animal, place, or scene that should dominate the image. Keep the first prompt simple, then add details deliberately. Midjourney’s Prompt Basics recommends short, clear prompts.
2. Choose a medium
State whether the image should read as a photograph, illustration, painting, sculpture, or another visual form. A medium gives the model useful direction without requiring a long string of style adjectives.
3. Place the subject in an environment
Add a setting when it contributes to the image. A concise prompt recipe is subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition; these are choices, not mandatory slots.

4. Specify lighting
Use recognizable descriptions such as soft window light, overcast daylight, studio lighting, or neon light. Pair the lighting with the subject and setting rather than listing unrelated effects.
5. Give a restrained color direction
Name a palette or tonal direction when color matters, such as muted ochre and teal or a cool blue-grey palette. Keep the palette focused so it supports rather than obscures the subject.
6. Set the mood
Use a small number of mood words that fit the intended scene, such as quiet, tense, celebratory, or melancholy. Treat mood as guidance, not a guarantee of a specific emotional response.
7. Describe the composition
Use framing language when relevant: close-up, full-body portrait, overhead view, or subject placed on the left third. State the intended relationship between subject and background in concrete terms.

8. Keep the opening prompt concise
Avoid stacking a long catalogue of adjectives and technical terms before explaining what belongs in the image. Start with the core scene, review the result, and add specificity in deliberate steps.
9. Use an Image Prompt for visual inspiration
An Image Prompt can influence content, composition, and color, but Midjourney describes it as inspiration for a new image rather than an exact-copy instruction. Include text describing the image you want, then add the reference when it helps.
10. Crop image references toward the output ratio
Midjourney recommends cropping reference images to match the final aspect ratio for best results. A reference with a very different shape may not guide the composition as intended.
11. Adjust image weight intentionally
In V7, image weight defaults to 1 and ranges from 0 to 3, according to Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation. Test a weight change when the reference seems to influence the result too strongly or too weakly; image weight is not interchangeable with style or Omni weight.

12. Treat Style Reference as style input
Use a Style Reference for visual treatment such as color, medium, texture, and lighting, while the text prompt explains the content you want. Avoid asking Midjourney to copy a reference and replace its subject. Midjourney documents –sw values from 0 to 1,000, with a default of 100. Style weight has more impact in V7 with style codes than with style images, according to its documentation.
13. Prototype with Draft Mode
Midjourney documents V7 Draft Mode as generating four images at half the GPU cost of standard V7 prompts. Use it to explore composition, pose, or broad color direction, then enhance a promising draft at standard GPU cost or upscale it as-is if it already suits your need.

14. Use Omni Reference selectively

Midjourney documents an Omni weight range of 1 to 1,000, with 100 as the default, and advises keeping it below 400 unless using very high stylize values, which can make results unpredictable. Omni Reference uses twice the GPU time of regular V7 generation. It has compatibility limits, so check the current documentation before planning edits around it.

Choose the right reference

These controls have different jobs and their weights are not interchangeable. If references compete or the result is inconsistent, remove one or adjust one setting at a time.
Refine images with model context in mind
Once a result has the subject and composition you want, refine it rather than restarting by default. Midjourney’s current Editor documentation describes operations such as Remix, inpainting, Pan, and Zoom Out, and says V8.X inpainting and outpainting use the new Edit Model. It also notes that accessing the old Retexture feature requires the default version to be V7 or earlier. Do not assume every current Editor operation is V7-native; check compatibility before building a workflow around it.

- Select V7 explicitly. Check the model selector or use the version parameter where supported.
- Write a short scene brief. Start with subject, medium, and the setting that matters.
- Add useful visual direction. Specify lighting, color, mood, and composition as needed.
