To make a fitted cross-stitch Mason jar topper, center a two-piece lid’s flat insert on the back of your finished design, leave about 1 inch of fabric beyond the insert, and gather the fabric around it with a running stitch. Fit the covered insert into its screw band and test it on the jar before adding glue or extra padding. Keep the edge low-profile so the band can seat fully.
A flat topper needs little or no filling; add a small amount of batting or toy stuffing only if you want a raised, pincushion-style top. The jar and closure are the project’s essential components, while filling and glue are optional.
Materials
- A finished small cross-stitch motif
- A two-piece Mason or canning jar closure with a flat insert and separate screw band
- Needle and cotton or embroidery thread
- Scissors
- Optional: toy stuffing or batting for a raised top
- Optional: suitable fabric or craft glue for a more permanent finish
If you are stitching the motif yourself, you will also need Aida cloth and embroidery floss. Use a closure that matches your jar, and check that the motif fits within the visible opening of the band. Standard- and wide-mouth closures differ; do not assume their parts are interchangeable.

Choose a flat or padded finish

These are craft options, not tested durability rankings. If the band is hard to fit, reduce or redistribute the filling and fabric bulk before considering glue.

How to make a fitted cross-stitch jar topper
- Center and check the design. Place the flat insert on the back of the finished motif. Center the design in the area that will show through the band, and confirm it fits before cutting.
- Cut with gathering allowance. Cut around the insert, leaving roughly 1 inch of fabric beyond its edge. This allowance will gather underneath. Trim only if excess cloth prevents the fabric from lying flat or makes the band difficult to close.
- Sew a running stitch. Sew around the fabric circle near its edge, then pull the thread to gather the fabric evenly around the insert. AllPeopleQuilt’s project places its running stitch 1/4 inch from the fabric edge; its instructions are a project example, not a universal requirement.
- Keep the motif centered as you gather. Tighten the gathers evenly and secure the thread with a knot or stitches. Check the visible design before securing it fully.
- Add optional padding. For a raised top, place a small amount of toy stuffing or batting beneath the stitched face before drawing the fabric snug. Keep most of the filling over the face of the insert rather than piling it around the rim.
- Fit and test the assembly. Seat the covered insert in the screw band and try it on the jar. If it does not fit, redistribute or reduce the filling and trim bulky excess cloth. Do not force the parts together.
- Glue only if wanted. Once the topper is centered and fits, you can use a small amount of suitable glue on the underside or backing for a permanent finish. The gathered method does not require glue.
Project measurements to keep in mind
Measurements vary by project and closure, so use your own insert as the guide. Craft with Cartwright recommends about 1 inch of fabric allowance beyond the lid. AllPeopleQuilt places its running stitch 1/4 inch from the edge and reports finished diameters of 2 3/4 inches for its small lid and 3 3/8 inches for its large lid. Those are measurements for that project, not universal Mason jar dimensions.
AllPeopleQuilt’s example starts with 6-inch and 6 1/2-inch Aida squares and uses two strands of embroidery floss. Treat these as that project’s instructions; your motif and closure may require different fabric dimensions.

Troubleshooting fit
The motif is off-center
Loosen the gathers before securing them, reposition the insert, and pull the fabric evenly again. Check the visible area through the band rather than relying only on the fabric’s outer edge.
The band will not seat or screw on easily
Check that the insert and band match the jar. Then reduce excess filling, redistribute it toward the top, or trim bulky excess fabric. Thick glue can also make the assembly harder to fit, so use it sparingly and only after testing.

The gathered fabric is uneven
Ease the gathers around the insert before tightening the thread fully. Keep the design centered while pulling, and secure the thread only when the fabric lies evenly.

How much fabric should I leave around the lid insert?
Leave about 1 inch beyond the insert as a gathering allowance, then trim only if the excess makes the fabric bulky or prevents the band from fitting. This is a tutorial recommendation, not a universal closure measurement.

Do I need to add stuffing?
No. A flat decorative topper can be made with little or no filling. Add a small amount of batting or toy stuffing only if you want a raised, pincushion-style finish.
Should I glue the cross-stitch to the lid?
Glue is optional. A gathered finish can be secured with thread; if you want a permanent assembly, test the fit and centering first, then use a small amount of suitable glue on the underside or backing.

Why will my covered insert not fit in the band?
Check that the closure parts match, then look for excess filling, gathered fabric, or glue bulk around the rim. Reduce or redistribute the bulk rather than forcing the insert into the band.
Are the small and large lid measurements universal?
No. AllPeopleQuilt reports finished diameters of 2 3/4 inches and 3 3/8 inches for its project’s small and large lids. Measure the closure you are using.
