There is no single best Android drawing app. ibis Paint X is the strongest all-round choice for most users, Krita is the clearest free/open-source option on a larger tablet, Sketchbook is easier for beginners, and MediBang Paint is particularly well suited to manga and comics.
“Free” does not mean the same thing in every app. Some are open source, some show advertisements, some limit layers or exports, and others are free to install but mainly sell subscriptions or Pro upgrades. The shortlist below separates those models and explains which app fits each kind of work.

Quick comparison
The ranking weighs drawing tools, layer support, stylus compatibility, phone and tablet usability, export options, offline practicality, and how restrictive or intrusive the monetization model is. It is a decision guide, not a hands-on latency benchmark. App features, prices, Android requirements, and store availability can change; historical 2024 claims should not be inferred from current listings alone.
| App | Best for | Free model | Ads or payment | Phone/tablet fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ibis Paint X | Overall illustration and manga | Free with ads | Ads; paid and Premium upgrades | Both, especially phones | Advertising and premium restrictions |
| Krita | Serious free painting | Free/open source | No commercial tier for the core software | Best on larger tablets | Desktop-style interface can feel awkward on phones |
| Sketchbook | Clean beginner sketching | Free access; verify historical terms | Feature split may vary by version | Both | Do not assume Android, iOS, and desktop features match |
| MediBang Paint | Manga and comics | Free with paid extras | Ads, in-app purchases, Premium and cloud features | Both | Cloud resources require internet |
| Infinite Painter | Polished painting | Meaningful free tier | Pro upgrade and in-app purchases | Phones, tablets, Chromebooks | Important features are limited without Pro |
| Concepts | Infinite-canvas thinking | Limited free tier | Advanced tools and exports are paid | Both | Free tier has five layers and basic JPG export |
| ArtFlow | Traditional painting alternative | Free tier; verify limits | Some tools or capacity may require Pro | Tablet-friendly | Free-version restrictions require checking |
| HiPaint | Feature-rich Procreate-style workflow | Freemium; verify terms | Subscription or paid features may apply | Best on tablets | Its free-versus-paid boundary is not as clear |
| FlipaClip | Simple 2D animation | Free tier | Premium tools and possible advertising | Both | Animation-first rather than a full painting suite |
| PENUP | Casual Samsung drawing | Free | Community features and availability vary | Best with compatible Samsung devices | Not a professional illustration workstation |
| Tayasui Sketches | Traditional-media-style sketching | Limited free tier | Full toolset requires payment | Both | Narrower free selection |
| PaperColor/PaperDraw | Paper-like casual sketching | Casual free app | May be ad-supported; verify listing | Phone-friendly | Limited layers and professional controls |
| Kids Doodle | Children’s doodling | Casual free app | May be ad-supported | Phone-friendly | Not suitable for serious artwork |
| Drawing Desk | Lessons and beginner doodles | Freemium; verify 2024 limits | Premium content or subscriptions may apply | Both | More teaching and doodling than production art |
| LayerPaint HD | Layer-based Android painting | Terms and 2024 availability require checking | Store conditions may vary | More suitable for tablets | Less mainstream support and documentation |
What “free” means here
- Free/open source: The core software is available without payment. Krita is the clearest example, although its Android version and 2024 interface should be checked against the relevant historical listing.
- Free with ads: You can draw without paying, but banner, full-screen, or rewarded advertisements may interrupt the workflow. ibis Paint X is the main example.
- Free tier: The app works at no cost but restricts tools, layers, brushes, resolution, or exports. Concepts and Infinite Painter fit this model.
- Free with paid extras: The core app is free, while premium brushes, cloud storage, materials, or other tools cost money. MediBang Paint uses this approach.
- Trial or free access: Installation or an initial trial does not make an app permanently free.
- Casual free app: A good choice for doodling or children, but not comparable with a complete illustration program.
Tier 1: serious illustration and painting
1. ibis Paint X — best overall for most Android users
Free model: free with ads, plus paid and Premium upgrades.
#1 Best Overall
- 【PREPARE YOUR IPAD BEFORE USE】Before using our iPad pen, ensure the "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" feature is off in Settings > Apple Pencil. Disabling this option is crucial for proper stylus functionality.
- 【UNIVERSAL STYLUS】Our stylus pens for touch screens are widely compatible with all touch screens including smartphones, Android tablets, touch screen laptops/PCs. They also work with Apple iPads, iPhones, iPad Pro, iPad Mini, iPad Air, Surface, Chromebooks and other capacitive touch screen devices.
- 【2-in-1 DESIGN】The stylus pen comes with different tips on both ends. One end is the disc tip, which is more accurate and sensitive, suitable for taking notes and drawing. The other end is a durable fibre tip for browsing or scrolling web pages, effectively protecting the screen from fingerprints or smudges.
- 【HIDDEN SPARE TIP】This 3 pack of stylus pens includes 3 additional disc tips and 3 extra fibre tips. Each disc tip is placed inside the stylus body. The spare tip can be taken out by simply rotating the fibre tip end. Convenient for always having a spare pen tip ready to go.
- 【HIGH PRECISION & SENSITIVITY】The stylus pen features a flexible disc tip that fits flexibly on the screen without leaving broken lines. Additionally, the disc tip is transparent, allowing you to get a clearer view when writing or drawing.
ibis Paint X offers the broadest balance for the typical Android artist: customizable brushes, layers, stabilisation, filters, materials, fonts, screen tones, manga-oriented tools, time-lapse recording, selection and transformation tools, and symmetry or ruler-based workflows. It is a particularly practical starting point for line art, social-media illustration, character art, and comics.
Its weakness is the business model. The free version is ad-supported, and some capabilities are reserved for the paid Android version or Premium membership. The developer’s current comparison page lists Android 7 or later as the operating environment and distinguishes the free, paid/ad-removal, and Premium tiers: ibisPaint’s official Android comparison. Current prices shown there are 2026 signals, not 2024 prices, and vary by store and region.
Choose it if: you want one versatile app that works reasonably well on a phone. Skip it if: advertisements or recurring payments are unacceptable.
2. Krita — best genuinely free professional-grade option
Free model: free/open source.
Krita is the strongest choice for users who want serious painting tools without an ad-supported mobile business model. Its layer-based raster workflow is suited to digital painting, concept work, textured brushes, selections, masks, and large, complex projects. It is also the most credible Android answer for readers looking for a free alternative to a desktop art program.
The trade-off is interface density. Krita’s desktop-oriented layout is much more comfortable on a large Android tablet than on a phone, where toolbars and panels consume valuable canvas space. Android compatibility and the exact 2024 feature state should be confirmed from the relevant dated Krita listing rather than backdated from later information.
Choose it if: you have a large tablet and value depth, local files, and no ads. Skip it if: you are a first-time artist on a small phone.

3. Sketchbook — best for uncomplicated sketching
Free model: free access, with historical Android terms requiring verification.
Sketchbook is appealing because it puts the canvas and drawing tools ahead of a crowded production interface. It is a strong fit for gesture sketches, thumbnails, handwriting-like notes, and learning basic digital drawing. The restrained interface can be easier to understand than ibis Paint X or Krita.
Do not assume that its Android feature and pricing split was identical to the iOS or desktop versions in 2024. Check the Android store listing for the device and date you care about before relying on a particular premium feature.
Choose it if: you want to open an app and sketch immediately. Skip it if: you need extensive comic production or advanced file interchange.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. MediBang Paint — best for manga and comics
Free model: free with ads and paid extras.
MediBang Paint is built around comic creation as much as general illustration. Its Android product information highlights comic panels, brushes, adjustable brush settings, fonts, tones, and multi-page comic projects. Those tools make it more useful than a general painting app when the job involves panel layouts, speech balloons, screentones, or repeatable manga assets.
The official Android page lists Android 8.0 or later and says cloud save, cloud materials, and cloud text need an internet connection: MediBang’s Android guide. Local drawing is not necessarily the same as cloud use, so export projects before uninstalling or changing devices. The current Google Play listing identifies ads and in-app purchases, while Premium terms and store-dependent pricing are documented in MediBang’s FAQ.
Choose it if: comics are your main output. Skip it if: you want a local-first, ad-free natural-media painting workflow.

5. Infinite Painter — best polished upgrade
Free model: functional free tier with limitations compared with Pro.
Recommended Free Tools
Infinite Painter is a polished option for users who care about a focused painting experience, stylus pressure and tilt, editable shapes, time-lapse, brush customisation, and a strong tablet workflow. It is positioned for Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, but a large screen makes its controls easier to use.
The developer describes the free version as functional but limited against Pro. The current Google Play description lists JPG, PNG, WEBP, ZIP, layered PSD, and Painter project export, but those current details should not automatically be presented as facts about the 2024 release: Infinite Painter on Google Play. The listing also identifies in-app purchases and Play Pass availability.
Choose it if: you are willing to pay for a refined workflow after trying it. Skip it if: every brush, export, and professional feature must remain unrestricted and free.
6. ArtFlow — best traditional-painting alternative
Free model: free tier with Pro restrictions to verify.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchArtFlow belongs on the serious-painting side of the list rather than the doodle-app group. It is suited to sketching and raster painting, particularly on an Android tablet with an active pen. It can be a sensible alternative when you want a conventional canvas-and-layers approach without MediBang’s comic emphasis.
Its exact free limits, export restrictions, Android requirements, and 2024 pricing should be checked in the relevant store listing. Treat brush counts and feature totals in older roundup articles as dated snapshots, not permanent specifications.
Tier 2: specialised creative workflows
7. Concepts — best infinite canvas for ideas and diagrams
Free model: meaningful but limited free tier.
Concepts is not primarily a natural-media painting application. It is better for product ideas, storyboards, architecture, diagrams, mind maps, UI planning, and visual thinking. Its vector-hybrid approach makes strokes and shapes more flexible than a conventional fixed raster canvas.
The free tier includes an infinite sketchbook, unlimited drawings, five layers, paper and grid types, and basic JPG export. Advanced tools and export formats require payment: Concepts’ official feature overview. That five-layer ceiling is manageable for ideation but restrictive for finished illustration.
Choose it if: you want an expandable workspace rather than a painting studio. Skip it if: you need deep brush texture or a full comic pipeline.
8. HiPaint — feature-rich Procreate-style alternative
Free model: freemium; verify the current and 2024 boundaries.
HiPaint targets users who want a familiar, feature-rich mobile painting experience with layers, brushes, selections, and transformation tools. It may appeal to artists moving from another tablet painting app, but “Procreate alternative” should be understood as a workflow comparison, not equivalence. Android hardware, interface polish, file support, and monetization are different.
Check exactly which brushes, canvases, exports, and account features are available without payment. Do not describe it as fully free merely because Google Play allows installation.

9. FlipaClip — best for simple 2D animation
Free model: free tier with paid features and possible advertising.
FlipaClip is the specialist choice for frame-by-frame animation. Its timeline and onion-skin-oriented workflow make it more suitable than a standard painting app for short hand-drawn clips, animated stickers, and simple cartoon sequences.
It is not the best pick for large finished paintings or complex comic pages. Check the current listing for watermark, export, advertising, and premium-tool restrictions before starting a project intended for publication.
10. PENUP — best casual Samsung-oriented option
Free model: free casual app.
PENUP is a comfortable choice for Samsung users who want to colour, sketch, browse a drawing community, or use a compatible S Pen. It is approachable and socially oriented, but it should not be confused with a full professional illustration suite.

11. Tayasui Sketches — best traditional-media feel
Free model: narrower free tier with paid tools.
Tayasui Sketches focuses on the feel of pencils, pens, watercolours, and other traditional tools. It is attractive for relaxed sketching and visual journaling, especially when you value a pleasant, uncluttered toolset over production depth.
The free selection is not the same as the complete app. Verify which tools, layers, imports, and exports were available on Android in 2024 before treating it as a no-cost professional option.

12. PaperColor or PaperDraw — best basic paper-like sketching
Free model: casual free app, with advertising or feature limits to verify.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPaperColor and PaperDraw are appropriate for quick finger sketches, simple colouring, and users who do not need a large layer stack or advanced export pipeline. They are easier to understand than a full art program and can work well as a first experiment.
They are poor choices for high-resolution illustration, serious comic production, or work that must remain editable in layers. Confirm the exact app name, developer, permissions, and store listing before installing similarly named copies.
13. Kids Doodle — best for children’s casual doodles
Free model: casual free app, commonly ad-supported.
Kids Doodle is designed for immediate, playful drawing rather than professional artwork. Its simple interface can be suitable for children or short-lived finger drawings, but it lacks the layer management, file safety, brush control, and export discipline expected by an illustrator.
Parents should review the current listing, advertising behaviour, permissions, and any in-app purchases before handing over a device. Use a supervised profile where possible.

14. Drawing Desk — best for lessons and beginner activities
Free model: freemium; verify Android availability and 2024 limits.
Drawing Desk is better suited to guided lessons, colouring, and beginner-oriented drawing activities than to a demanding illustration workflow. It can be useful when instruction matters more than layered production files.
Check whether lessons, brushes, exports, or other content are locked behind a subscription. Do not choose it for a project that requires dependable PSD or native-file preservation unless the specific Android version explicitly supports it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
15. LayerPaint HD — a tablet-oriented layer-based alternative
Free model: verify the 2024 store terms before relying on it.
LayerPaint HD is a more focused alternative for Android users who want a layer-based painting workspace, particularly on a larger display. It is less widely documented than ibis Paint X, Krita, or Infinite Painter, so its value depends heavily on whether the version available to you supports the canvas sizes, stylus behaviour, and export formats you need.
It is included as a distinct 2024-era alternative rather than padding the list with another children’s doodle app. Confirm Play Store availability, minimum Android version, current update status, and pricing in your country before committing important work.
Best app by scenario
- Best overall illustration: ibis Paint X.
- Best free/open-source painting: Krita, especially on a larger tablet.
- Best beginner sketching: Sketchbook.
- Best manga and comics: MediBang Paint.
- Best polished painting upgrade: Infinite Painter.
- Best traditional painting alternatives: Infinite Painter or ArtFlow.
- Best infinite canvas and diagrams: Concepts.
- Best animation: FlipaClip.
- Best Samsung-oriented casual drawing: PENUP.
- Best simple finger drawing: PaperColor/PaperDraw or Kids Doodle.
- Best large Android tablet workflow: Krita, Infinite Painter, ibis Paint X, or Sketchbook.
- Best phone workflow: ibis Paint X, Sketchbook, MediBang Paint, or Concepts. Desktop-like interfaces deserve caution on small screens.
- Best route away from ads: Krita, or a verified ad-free Sketchbook setup; otherwise consider a paid upgrade rather than assuming the free tier is ad-free.
Phone versus tablet: the choice changes the ranking
A feature-rich app can be excellent on a 12-inch tablet and frustrating on a six-inch phone. Phones favour quick sketches, line art, and compact interfaces. Tablets provide room for tool panels, larger canvases, palm placement, and active-pen gestures.
Krita’s desktop-style controls are the clearest example: powerful on a tablet, potentially cumbersome on a phone. MediBang says its panels can be collapsed to increase drawing space and supports Android smartphones and tablets: see its Android documentation. Infinite Painter is explicitly available for phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, but its free limitations still apply.
Pressure and tilt are not guaranteed by the app alone. The stylus, digitiser, Android implementation, firmware, and app must all expose the relevant input. Test a few strokes before paying for a Pro unlock, especially with generic Bluetooth pens or inexpensive phones.
Export and file safety
Sharing a flattened image is not the same as preserving a project. Before serious work, determine whether the app can export:
- PNG: useful for transparency and clean digital art.
- JPEG: suitable for ordinary images but lossy and unable to preserve transparency.
- WEBP: useful where supported, but not accepted by every downstream tool.
- PSD: valuable for moving layered work to desktop software, provided the export actually preserves layers and compatible blend modes.
- Native project files: the safest way to preserve app-specific layers and editability, but they can be tied to one application.
Check whether high-resolution, CMYK, layered, or multi-page export is restricted. Current Infinite Painter documentation lists JPG, PNG, WEBP, ZIP, layered PSD, and Painter project export, but that is a current listing and should not be silently backdated to 2024. Likewise, ibisPaint’s current comparison includes export, CMYK, cloud, and tier-specific details that may have changed since 2024.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Backup checklist before a major project
- Save the native project file locally.
- Export a flattened PNG or JPEG for quick viewing.
- Export a layered format such as PSD if your app supports it.
- Copy the files to a second location instead of relying on one device.
- Open a test export in the software you plan to use next.
- Export again before uninstalling, resetting, or changing accounts.
Accounts, cloud features, and offline drawing
An app may allow local drawing without an account while requiring sign-in for cloud storage, shared materials, synchronisation, or cross-device access. Cloud storage is not automatically a complete backup system: it may have storage limits, depend on an internet connection, or become less useful if a subscription ends.
MediBang specifically says cloud save, cloud materials, and cloud text require internet access. Ordinary local drawing may still work offline, but cloud-dependent resources will not. Keep an exported local copy regardless of which app you use.
What to check before installing
- Minimum Android version and whether the listing is available in your country.
- Whether your phone or tablet has enough RAM for the canvas size you plan to use.
- Whether the stylus provides pressure and tilt through a supported protocol.
- Maximum canvas dimensions and layer limits.
- Whether exports are flattened, layered, watermarked, or premium-only.
- Whether ads are banners, full-screen interruptions, or rewarded unlocks.
- Whether payment is a one-time unlock, recurring subscription, trial, or Play Pass entitlement.
- Whether cloud features require an account or internet access.
- Whether the app has reliable native project recovery after a crash.
Bottom line
Install ibis Paint X first if you want the best balance of features and phone usability. Choose Krita for a genuinely free, serious tablet painting workflow; Sketchbook for a clean beginner experience; MediBang Paint for manga and comics; Infinite Painter if you may pay for a polished stylus-focused upgrade; and Concepts for infinite-canvas diagrams and visual planning. For children, animation, or casual doodling, use the specialised apps rather than expecting a painting suite to do every job.
One historical caution matters: current store pages are not proof of what an app offered in 2024. Treat prices, Android requirements, feature counts, and free-tier rules as date- and region-specific. MediBang Paletta is deliberately absent because its Android release announcement is dated 2026, not 2024.
