Select the text, vector, or link layer in GIMP’s Layers dialog, then choose Layer → Rasterize. You can also right-click the layer and choose Rasterize. GIMP converts the special layer into a normal bitmap layer so you can paint, erase, clone, smudge, or apply other pixel-based edits.

What rasterizing does

Rasterizing converts a special layer into a layer made from pixels. In GIMP 3.2, the command applies to text layers, vector layers, and link layers. The layer keeps its rendered appearance, but its original special-layer information is no longer the active editing representation.

For example, rasterizing text preserves how the lettering currently looks, but you can no longer conveniently edit its wording, font, size, or text-layer properties as text. A rasterized vector layer no longer provides the same vector-based fill, stroke, or outline editing. A rasterized linked layer no longer updates through its link relationship.

How to rasterize a layer in GIMP 3.2

  1. Open your image in GIMP.
  2. In the Layers dialog, click the text, vector, or link layer you want to convert.
  3. Choose Layer → Rasterize from the main menu.
  4. Alternatively, right-click the selected layer in the Layers dialog and choose Rasterize.
  5. Choose a pixel-editing tool such as Paintbrush, Eraser, Clone, or Smudge and edit the layer.

If you may need the original editable layer, duplicate it first with Layer → Duplicate Layer. Rasterize the duplicate and keep the original hidden or available for later changes.

How to tell that rasterization worked

  • The command changes from Rasterize to Revert Rasterize when the applicable layer is selected.
  • The warning preventing direct pixel editing should no longer appear.
  • Painting, erasing, cloning, smudging, and similar pixel operations can be applied directly.
  • Text-specific or vector-specific editing controls are no longer the layer’s active editing model.

The layer thumbnail may look almost identical before and after rasterization. Rasterization does not automatically blur, sharpen, enlarge, or improve the image; it changes how the layer stores and accepts edits. GIMP’s API describes a rasterized text layer as a generic raster variant whose rendered pixel buffer is used for drawing operations (GIMP developer documentation).

What you lose by rasterizing

Rasterizing is useful when you need pixel-level control, but it gives up the advantages of the original layer type:

  • Text: You lose convenient editing of the wording, font, font size, line spacing, and other text properties.
  • Vector artwork: You no longer have the same scalable, outline-based editing model.
  • Linked content: The layer no longer updates through its external link.
  • Resolution independence: Enlarging the rendered pixels later can make edges appear jagged or blurry.

Rasterize after typography, vector transformations, and composition decisions are finished, or work at the final intended pixel dimensions. Pixelation usually comes from enlarging or transforming the resulting bitmap, not from rasterization itself.

Undo or revert rasterization

Immediately after rasterizing, use Edit → Undo if the action is still in GIMP’s undo history.

In GIMP 3.2, select the rasterized layer and choose Layer → Revert Rasterize. The same command is available from the layer’s context menu when applicable. According to the GIMP 3.2 release notes, this workflow can clear destructive edits made after rasterization and restore the prior special-layer state. Revert it before making destructive edits if preserving the original matters; do not assume that every later change can be recovered while also keeping all of those changes.

When should you rasterize?

Rasterize when… Keep the special layer when…
You need to paint directly on text, vector artwork, or linked content. The wording, font, or size may change.
You need pixel-level erasing, cloning, smudging, or retouching. The layer may need substantial enlargement.
An operation or filter explicitly requires a bitmap layer. A linked asset may be updated later.
The design is final and its editable properties are no longer needed. You are still arranging the composition.
You want a fixed pixel treatment such as distressing, texture, or hand-painted effects. A mask, selection, or non-destructive effect can solve the problem.

For a partially destructive workflow, duplicate the layer, rasterize only the copy, and keep the original as a clean backup. If you want to edit only part of a text layer, consider a selection or mask, separate the words into different text layers first, or rasterize a duplicate rather than the original.

Rasterize is not the same as these other commands

Operation Result
Rasterize Converts a text, vector, or link layer into pixels.
Flatten Image Combines the entire image into one layer.
Merge Down Combines the selected layer with the layer below.
Text to Path Creates a path outline from text instead of creating ordinary painted pixels.
Path to selection, fill, or stroke Uses a path to make a selection or produce painted pixels.
Apply Layer Mask Permanently applies a mask to its layer; a mask is separate from the layer itself.
Export Creates an external PNG, JPEG, or other file; it does not necessarily change the editable layer in the XCF.

If you want to preserve scalable letter contours rather than paint pixels, use Text to Path. The GIMP 3.2 menu reference lists it as a separate operation.

Why Rasterize may be missing

  1. The layer is already a bitmap layer. Ordinary image layers are already rasterized, so edit them directly.
  2. The wrong item is selected. Select the actual layer row, not a layer group, mask, channel, or path.
  3. The layer type is unsupported. In GIMP 3.2, the relevant types are text, vector, and link layers.
  4. You are using another GIMP version. Open Help → About GIMP and check the version.
  5. The context menu was opened in the wrong place. Right-click the layer row in the Layers dialog, or use the main Layer menu instead.

The exact Layer → Rasterize and Layer → Revert Rasterize workflow is documented for GIMP 3.2. GIMP 2.10 and other older versions may use different labels or behavior, so do not apply GIMP 3.2 instructions blindly to older screenshots. Check the documentation branch for your installed version through GIMP’s documentation page.

Do you need to rasterize before exporting?

No. Exporting a finished image to PNG or JPEG creates a raster file without requiring you to convert the working layer first. Keep text and vector layers editable in the XCF while you are still designing, and rasterize only when an editing operation inside GIMP needs direct pixel access.

Layer masks

A layer mask is not the same as a rasterizable layer. To edit the mask, select its mask thumbnail and use mask-specific tools. To permanently apply it, use Apply Layer Mask.

Paths

A path is not a layer. You will not rasterize it through the Layers dialog. Convert it to a selection, then fill or stroke the selection as needed, or use another path-based workflow.

Imported PSD and SVG files

Imported assets may not retain every feature or editing relationship from their original application. Rasterizing does not restore Photoshop smart-object behavior or guarantee complete SVG structure. GIMP’s release notes describe link and vector layers as GIMP’s own non-destructive layer types, not as a promise of identical cross-application editability.

Bottom line

In GIMP 3.2, select the applicable layer and use Layer → Rasterize. Do it when you need direct pixel editing; otherwise, keep the text, vector, or link layer editable. Duplicating the layer first gives you a safe original, while Layer → Revert Rasterize and Edit → Undo provide recovery options in GIMP 3.2.
