There is no single best white paint for every interior wall. The right choice depends on the room’s light, furnishings, and whether you want a warm, cool, crisp, or softened white. This shortlist brings together 15 options described by Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams; it is a starting point, not an independent ranking or a guarantee of how a color will look in your home.
15 white paint colors to consider
Use each maker’s color name and code when comparing samples. White names are not standardized across brands, so a color with the same or a similar name from another manufacturer may look different.

- Mold & Mildew-Proof paint film - guaranteed for 5 years
- Resists dirt and moisture on film coating

| Chantilly Lace | Benjamin Moore OC-65 | One of Benjamin Moore’s whitest shades, with little to no visible undertone and a neutral character. |
| Swiss Coffee | Benjamin Moore OC-45 | One of Benjamin Moore’s close-following popular whites. Compare the specific brand and color in your room rather than assuming all “Swiss Coffee” paints look alike. |
| Simply White | Benjamin Moore OC-117 | A warmer-toned white; a former Benjamin Moore Color of the Year. |
| Decorator’s White | Benjamin Moore OC-149 | A cooler white in Benjamin Moore’s wall-color guidance, also described as a clean, bright trim option. |

| Alabaster | Sherwin-Williams SW 7008 | Subtle beige undertones, with a blend of warm and cool character. |
| Pure White | Sherwin-Williams SW 7005 | A hint of gray softens the white without making it feel stark. |
| Shoji White | Sherwin-Williams SW 7042 | A warm-toned off-white. |
| Eider White | Sherwin-Williams SW 7014 | A cooler neutral with gray undertones. |
| Dover White | Sherwin-Williams SW 6385 | A yellow tint gives it a warm, inviting character. |
These descriptions come from the manufacturers’ guidance for their own colors. They are not standardized cross-brand measurements, and the shortlist does not rank the shades under controlled conditions.
How to choose a white for your room
Start with the effect you want
Decide whether you want the walls to read warm or cool, and whether you prefer a crisp white or a more muted one. Whites that look nearly identical alone can show different undertones when their chips are placed side by side. Benjamin Moore Colour & Design Expert Andrea Magno explains: “There are hundreds of Benjamin Moore shades of white. By viewing white paint colours next to one another, the undertone will become more obvious, making it easier to select a white option that leans warm or cool.” Benjamin Moore’s white paint guidance offers a way to compare its shades.
Rank #2
- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 30 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion. Paint/Stain Features: Washable, Waterproof
- Flat finish provides a fresh new look for surfaces, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
Account for the room’s natural light
Light can strengthen a white’s undertone. Sherwin-Williams says north-facing rooms enhance cool-toned whites, while south-facing rooms enhance warm undertones. If you want to balance rather than emphasize that effect, its guidance suggests considering a warm-undertone white in cool lighting or a blue-undertone white in warm lighting. Treat this as a starting point: the color still needs to be checked in the actual room. See Sherwin-Williams’ white paint guidance.
Compare against furnishings and fixed finishes
Benjamin Moore associates warmer whites with red, yellow, and neutral accessories, and cooler whites with green, blue, and cool-gray furnishings. Check the paint against elements that will stay in the room, such as flooring, counters, cabinetry, and upholstery. A shade that works with one room’s palette may clash with another’s.

Decide whether walls and trim should match
A single white across walls and trim creates a different contrast from pairing a wall color with a brighter or more muted trim white. Benjamin Moore describes White Dove as a lower-contrast trim option and Decorator’s White as a clean, bright trim choice. Test the proposed combination together; a white can look different beside another white than it does on its own.
How to sample white paint before committing
- Shortlist a few shades. Compare chips side by side to see which lean warm, cool, crisp, or muted.
- Get samples for the actual colors. Benjamin Moore recommends brush-on samples or reusable peel-and-stick samples. Screen and printed color representations can vary from the actual paint.
- Place samples in the room. View them against the room’s existing finishes and in more than one location if the light differs across the space.
- Observe them at different times. Benjamin Moore recommends living with samples for a few days and checking them from morning through evening under natural and artificial light. Its paint-color testing guidance explains this approach.
- Choose only after comparing the finalists in context. Do not rely on a screen image or a name alone to predict the finished wall.
Choose the finish separately from the color
A color choice does not determine the sheen. Benjamin Moore recommends matte or eggshell for walls, semi-gloss for trim and doors, and flat for ceilings; it describes eggshell as practical and easy to clean. This is the manufacturer’s general guidance, not a rule for every paint line or household. Check the product’s own finish recommendations before buying. See Benjamin Moore’s sheen guidance.
