You can make a simple, editable logo concept in desktop Microsoft Word by combining formatted shapes with WordArt, arranging the pieces, and grouping them. Word works for a basic wordmark or badge; the available evidence does not establish that it creates print-ready, scalable identity artwork or a particular image-export format.

Choose a simple logo layout

Start with one clear element: a short name, a symbol paired with a name, or a supplied image alongside a name. Keeping the design to a few pieces makes it easier to arrange and edit in Word.

Layout What you use Useful when
Text-only wordmark WordArt You want a name styled with a fill, outline, or text effect.
Badge A shape behind a WordArt name You want a compact symbol-and-name treatment that can be moved as a unit.
Picture plus wordmark A supplied image and WordArt You already have a simple image to pair with the name; picture transparency may depend on your Word version.

These are practical arrangements using Word features, not prescribed design rules. Microsoft’s guidance covers drawing objects and WordArt in Word editions including Microsoft 365 and several perpetual releases; ribbon labels and options can vary by platform. See Microsoft’s drawing-object guidance and WordArt instructions and platform notes.

Create a simple logo in desktop Word

  1. Open a blank document. Work in desktop Word for the drawing and WordArt steps below. Microsoft notes that adding WordArt in Microsoft 365 for the web requires the desktop version.
  2. Add a symbol or background shape. Choose Insert > Shapes, select a shape, and draw it in the document. With the shape selected, use the Shape Format tab to adjust its fill, outline, size, or effects. For a text-only logo, skip this step.
  3. Add the name with WordArt. Choose Insert > WordArt, select a starting style, and type the name. Select the WordArt to adjust Text Fill, Text Outline, or Text Effects. These controls let you customize the text treatment; they do not impose a particular logo aesthetic.
  4. Arrange the pieces. Resize and position the shape and wordmark so they read as one composition. Word’s drawing-object tools include controls for sizing and aligning objects; the exact options may differ across editions and platforms.
  5. Group related objects. Select the objects you want to move together, then choose Shape Format > Arrange > Group. Microsoft explains that grouped drawing objects are treated as one object, which makes it easier to reposition the badge or other combined elements.
  6. Save the Word document as your editable working file. The cited Microsoft support pages do not establish a specific image-export workflow or guarantee a transparent-background output, so do not assume a particular export format from these steps.

For more detail on drawing, formatting, sizing, alignment, and grouping, consult Microsoft’s drawing instructions. For WordArt insertion and text formatting, consult Microsoft’s WordArt instructions.

Three logo examples you can build

Text-only wordmark

Insert a short name as WordArt, then use a restrained text fill and outline. This is the simplest option because it uses one editable object rather than coordinating separate symbol and text elements.

Badge with a shape and name

Insert a basic shape as the badge background, add the name in WordArt, and position the text over it. Select both objects and group them so the badge can be moved together. Word supports formatting and grouping drawing objects; the visual result depends on the choices you make.

Supplied picture plus wordmark

Add a supplied image and a WordArt name, then arrange them as a pair. If the image needs transparency, check your Word edition first: Microsoft says direct picture transparency is available in Word 2021 and Microsoft 365. Its support page describes a shape-fill workaround for other versions and says Word for the web cannot make a picture transparent. Follow Microsoft’s picture-transparency instructions for the applicable version.

What Word can—and cannot—establish for this workflow

Word provides editable drawing objects, shapes, and WordArt that can be formatted and grouped into a simple logo concept. That is useful for drafting a name treatment or badge in a document. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a specific image-export procedure, transparent-background export, or print-ready and scalable identity output. Keep the Word file as the editable working document, and verify any output requirements separately before relying on it for a particular production use.

Feature availability is not identical everywhere. Microsoft warns that steps and options can differ in Word for Mac or Word for the web; its WordArt instructions specifically say WordArt insertion in Microsoft 365 for the web requires the desktop app. Check the instructions for your edition before following a platform-specific step.
