The original 16-icon roundup is best treated as a historical design index, not a verified list of downloads that still work or licenses that still permit use. Its entries feature Twitter-era bird artwork and themed icons. For current official branding, use X’s brand toolkit; check the original creator’s terms before using any third-party design.
What the original 16-icon list contains
The Smashing Apps roundup links to 16 separate resources, rather than offering one downloadable pack. Its list ranges from social buttons and bird illustrations to novelty treatments. The page calls them free, but it does not provide a current availability audit, a format inventory, or license terms for each item.

The page currently displays November 22, 2025, while search metadata identifies January 31, 2012, as its original date. The category page provides additional historical context: Smashing Apps’ Twitter-icons archive. Given that date difference and the age of the linked resources, treat the roundup as an archival index.

Those names suggest a mix of decorative, playful, and conventional social-icon styles, but the roundup does not substantiate a file format or license for every entry. Don’t assume a title such as “Vector” or “High Resolution” confirms what a download contains today.

Are the 16 downloads still available?
The roundup links to separate creator and resource pages, including sites such as DeviantArt, Hongkiat, Productive Dreams, GraphicLeftovers, Smashing Magazine, and Iconshock. The roundup itself does not establish whether each link still works, whether a file can still be downloaded, or whether its original terms remain in effect. Accordingly, none of the 16 should be presented as a verified current download based on that page alone.
A live landing page is not proof that its file is downloadable, and a file reposted elsewhere is not proof that its license travels with it. If you locate an item, prefer the original creator’s page, confirm the download and terms there, and avoid misleading download buttons or installers you did not expect.

What “free” does—and does not—tell you
A free download may still require attribution, limit commercial use, prohibit redistribution, or restrict modifications. The original roundup does not compare personal and commercial use, attribution, editing, client work, or redistribution for its 16 entries. For any item whose creator’s terms you cannot find, treat the license as unverified; do not assume it is cleared for a paid website, app, or client project.
- Does the license explicitly allow commercial use and client work?
- Is attribution or a link-back required, and where must it appear?
- May you recolor, resize, or otherwise modify the artwork?
- May the asset be included in an app, template, or other product you distribute?
- Are you obtaining it from the creator or an authorized source?
- Does the permission cover the specific use you have in mind?
Twitter bird artwork is not current X branding
The old collection belongs to the Twitter-bird era. X’s official brand toolkit provides current X logo assets and other brand resources, including username and partnership lockups, post templates, and embed-related resources. X says use of its trademark resources is subject to its brand guidelines, terms of service, and other policies.

Choose official X assets when identifying an active account, business relationship, advertisement, product feature, or other use where current brand identity matters. A third-party bird illustration may suit a personal blog, historical article, retro design, or clearly unofficial editorial graphic, but it should not imply that X endorses you.
Twitter’s 2021 external brand guidelines are historical guidance, not a substitute for current X rules. They specified a blue or white logo, equal size and height alongside other social icons, and a minimum width of 32 pixels for the logo social icon. They also advised using the logo outside a container when possible and prohibited altering, rotating, stretching, skewing, accessorizing, or adding effects to it. For current use, consult X’s present toolkit and policies rather than assuming those legacy specifications remain the governing standard.

Choosing a file for a website or design
Because the old roundup does not verify formats item by item, inspect the actual download and license before choosing. These general format trade-offs can help once you have a properly licensed file:
- SVG: Scales cleanly for responsive and high-density displays. Before using one, inspect it for unexpected scripts, external references, or unnecessary content.
- PNG: Convenient for quick placement, but enlarging a small raster image can make it blurry.
- ICO: Intended chiefly for favicons; it is usually not the most flexible choice for a social button.
- PSD, AI, or EPS: Can suit design work where editable source artwork is useful, but check the actual file and software requirements.
- Webfont icons: Can work in interfaces, but consider the font’s license, loading behavior, and accessibility.
- Raster sprites: Common in older web designs, but less adaptable to responsive layouts.
Novelty illustrations may look distinctive at large sizes and become illegible in a compact mobile control. Check contrast against the actual background and preview the asset at its displayed size before publishing.
How to use an icon accessibly and responsibly
- Make the icon a real link to the intended profile or action, not just a decorative image.
- Give an icon-only link an accessible name such as “Follow us on X.” If visible text already names the destination and the image is purely decorative, use an empty
altattribute. - Keep the link easy to tap, preserve sufficient contrast, and test it at small sizes and on mobile.
- Do not rely on a symbol alone if readers need to understand where it leads.
- Avoid embedding third-party tracking code just to display an icon.
- For an official X button or post, X recommends its embed codes to preserve proper rendering and functionality.
Current alternatives when an old link fails
For official X identity
Use X’s brand toolkit when you need an official current logo or related brand resource. It is the first-party option; decorative Twitter-bird variants are not a replacement for official identity assets.
For a range of third-party styles
Icons8’s social-media Twitter/X collection is a maintained alternative offering multiple icon styles and PNG and vector downloads. Its terms vary by use: Icons8’s free-use policy describes attribution requirements that depend on where and how an asset is used. Its pricing and subscription information describes paid licensing, but does not establish one price or identical terms for every asset. Check the specific asset and applicable license instead of assuming free means attribution-free or commercially unrestricted.
