These 16 sewing projects range from small accessories and gifts to household textiles and a dress or blouse. For a manageable first project, try a scrunchie, a drawstring pouch, or a tea-towel bread pouch; choose later projects by the materials and techniques you want to practice.

The roundup is by Alexandra Churchill and was updated April 6, 2026. It presents the projects as beginner-friendly overall, but does not give formal difficulty ratings for individual projects. The progression below is a practical guide, not a tested ranking.

Before you start: choose hand sewing or machine sewing

You do not need a sewing machine for every project. The canvas log bag and floor runner are hand-sewn in the source instructions, while the stuffed paper hearts and rolled-hem napkins use a machine. Other projects vary in their construction; check the instructions for the particular project before you begin.

Basic sewing supplies

Gather what your chosen project requires rather than buying every notion at once. Basic needles, thread, fabric, and a machine are relevant to some projects, but the materials differ across the list. Check the project instructions before shopping.

16 sewing projects, organized by a useful skill progression

1. Scrunchie

A scrunchie is a small project for practicing a seam, turning fabric, and inserting elastic. Cotton is suggested as an easier fabric for beginners; cotton or flannel can also be easier to cut and sew because they fray less than some alternatives.

Once you understand the construction, you can use leftover fabric to make more.

2. Stuffed paper hearts

These decorative paper pouches are filled with small tokens and stitched around the edge on a sewing machine. They can be used for holidays, parties, showers, or other celebrations.

The defined outline and small scale make this a way to practice stitching around a shape. Leave an opening for the filling as directed by the project instructions.

3. Canvas log bag

This hand-sewn log carrier uses one piece of canvas measuring 18 1/2 by 36 1/2 inches, leather handles, a stitching needle, waxed thread, and an iron. Fold each side under 1/2 inch and press; fold another 1/2 inch and hem around. Hand-stitch the handles to the centers of the short sides.

Brother FB1757X Mechanical Sewing Machine
  • 17 built-in stitches
  • 4-step buttonhole style
  • Reverse button
  • Free arm for sewing
  • LED lighting for the work area

Canvas is a substantial material, so mark and press the folds carefully and work slowly through bulky sections.

4. Cat hammock

Make the hammock from two fabric squares sewn together with batting between them, then sew ribbon to each corner for suspension. The project is designed to hang from a table with a top-platform opening.

Before allowing a cat to use it, inspect the seams, ribbon attachments, and mounting points. The project instructions do not establish a safe weight limit or guarantee that a particular table is suitable.

5. Tea-towel bread pouch

Stitch two kitchen tea towels together, leaving the top open, to make a pouch for bread or other baked goods. The source suggests discount or thrift-store towels, making this an opportunity to reuse materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wash the towels first if they are washable, and press them flat before sewing. Pin the layers so they do not shift while stitching.

6. Knitting basket

This hand-sewn basket upcycles a knit sweater, either one you already own or a thrifted garment. It can hold yarn, knitting tools, fabric scraps, or other craft supplies.

A knit sweater can stretch, so handle it gently and stabilize it as needed while sewing.

7. Waterproof book cover

Make a book cover from oilcloth and add self-adhesive Velcro as a closure. To size the oilcloth, cut it to the object’s width plus 1/2 inch for seams and 2 1/4 times its height. Fold it into a pocket shape with the right side outward and sew the edges.

Measure the book while it is closed. Oilcloth can show holes, so avoid unnecessary pinning and test the adhesive fastener on a scrap first.

8. Drawstring pouches

Small drawstring pouches can hold trinkets, jewelry, or travel items. They are also a useful way to use fabric scraps.

Choose a fabric that is comfortable for you to work with, and follow the project instructions for forming the cord casing.

9. Felt hot-water-bottle cozy

Cut two pieces of felt, each 10 by 15 inches. Sew three sides, turn the cozy inside out, insert the bottle, and cinch the top with ribbon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure your own bottle before cutting: the stated dimensions are not a guarantee that every bottle will fit. The cozy should not interfere with the bottle’s cap; follow the bottle manufacturer’s safety instructions.

10. Dress and blouse

A garment pattern allows four lengths of a blouse or dress. The source recommends lightweight cotton or linen with good drape.

Read the pattern before cutting and compare its sizing information with your measurements. Fabric choice and fit make this a more involved project than a small accessory.

11. Floor runner

Hand-sew four small 22-by-33-inch rugs together along their horizontal sides using a whipstitch. Knot the thread at each seam end.

12. Rolled-hem napkins

One yard of fabric can make a table’s worth of napkins. This project uses a sewing machine but does not require a serger; a zigzag stitch is offered as an alternative edge treatment.

Press the edges before stitching to help create a neater hem. Test the stitch on a scrap first.

13. Sleep mask

Use a template to cut three layers of soft fabric, assemble them, and finish the edge with bias tape. The curved shape makes careful cutting and stitching helpful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep any elastic or tie clear of the seam while assembling the layers, and work slowly around the curve.

14. Drawstring jewelry pouch

This contrasting-fabric travel case is designed for rings, hair pins, and other small accessories. It offers another use for drawstring-pouch construction while letting you combine fabrics.

Avoid overly bulky fabric combinations if you plan to gather the pouch tightly.

15. Duvet cover

Pair two sheets and sew the top and sides in straight lines to make a duvet cover. Ribbon ties can replace bottom button closures.

16. Embroidered stocking

An embroidered stocking combines fabric construction with personalization. Use colors and handwriting-inspired embroidery to make Christmas décor or a potential family keepsake.

Practice lettering before embroidering the final piece. This is a project for focusing on needlework rather than finishing a practical item quickly.

How to avoid common beginner problems

  • Fabric shifts: Press and align the fabric, then pin or clip it as appropriate. Check alignment frequently on large projects.
  • Edges fray: Cotton or flannel may be easier to cut and sew for a beginner; follow the project’s instructions for finishing raw edges.
  • Thick material is difficult to sew: Work slowly and do not force the needle through bulky sections.
  • Curves look uneven: Sew slowly and keep the fabric layers aligned around the curve.
  • Garment fit is wrong: Read the pattern and check its sizing information before cutting your fabric.
  • Closures pull loose: Follow the construction instructions closely at handles, ties, and other attachment points.

A sensible shopping list by project

Check the instructions for the project you choose before buying supplies. Several ideas can use materials you already own or can repurpose, including fabric scraps for pouches, thrifted tea towels for the bread pouch, and an existing or thrifted sweater for the basket.

Project Materials specified in the roundup
Canvas log bag Canvas, iron, stitching needle, waxed thread, and leather handles
Cat hammock Two fabric squares, batting, and ribbon
Book cover Oilcloth and self-adhesive Velcro
Hot-water-bottle cozy Two 10-by-15-inch felt pieces and ribbon
Dress or blouse Pattern and lightweight cotton or linen with good drape
Sleep mask Template, three layers of soft fabric, and bias tape
Embroidered stocking Fabric and embroidery supplies

Final recommendation

For a first project, choose a scrunchie, drawstring pouch, or tea-towel bread pouch. They are small, useful ways to get started. Then choose a project based on the technique or finished item you want next, from hand-sewn pieces to machine-stitched napkins or a garment.

The best progression is one that keeps you sewing. Start with a project that matches your tools and materials, and use scraps or reclaimed items when they suit the instructions.

FAQ

Do I need a sewing machine for these projects?

No. Not every project calls for a machine: the canvas log bag and floor runner are described as hand-sewn, while the stuffed paper hearts and rolled-hem napkins use a machine. Check the instructions for the project you choose.
