In December 2022, artists used ArtStation’s portfolio and discovery system to stage a mass online protest against AI-generated artwork. They uploaded a shared “No AI Art” graphic to their portfolios, and the repeated images dominated the site’s Trending page. The protest objected to generated work appearing alongside human-made portfolios and called for artist control over the use of artwork in AI training.
What happened on ArtStation?
ArtStation was widely used by artists in games, film, entertainment, media, and illustration to display portfolios and find professional opportunities. Protesters objected to AI-generated images appearing alongside human-made portfolios and competing for attention in the same discovery areas. They also raised concerns about whether artwork had been used to train image generators without artists’ permission. “Theft” was a characterization used by some protesters, not a settled legal finding.

Ars Technica reported contemporaneous ArtStation search results of 2,099 for “No AI Art” and 2,111 for “no to AI generated images.” These were dated search-result snapshots, not a verified count of unique participants.
The campaign made a platform tension visible: the same discovery tools that help artists find professional opportunities could also put generated images beside work made by artists.
Why did artists object to AI-generated art?
Visibility in a professional portfolio space
Protesters argued that AI-generated images should not appear without clear distinction in prominent galleries alongside portfolios built through years of practice. They were concerned that viewers and prospective clients might not know how an image was made or what skills it demonstrated.

Consent and training data
Artists questioned whether their work had been included in image-generator training data without individual permission, payment, or a practical way to refuse. Ars Technica reported that publicly accessible ArtStation artwork was included in Stable Diffusion training data; that is a historical report and does not establish the contents of every model or present-day training set.
The protest documented artists’ concerns; it did not prove that every generated image copied an identifiable artwork or settle whether particular training practices were unlawful.
Livelihood and professional control
Artists also worried that clients might substitute inexpensive generated images for paid creative work. These were livelihood concerns and predictions. The sources reviewed do not establish a measured employment impact caused by the protest or by AI-generated work.

What did ArtStation do about AI art?
ArtStation did not ban AI-generated artwork in response to the 2022 protest. Its initial response described tags for artists to indicate whether they permitted their work to be used for noncommercial AI research or commercial AI training. The first NoAI rollout required artists to tag works individually, according to contemporaneous reporting. Do not confuse that 2022 implementation with the platform’s later settings.

Those are platform statements, not evidence that every outside party complies or that existing models have been changed.
