There is no universally best bedroom paint color: choose one that suits the room’s light, furnishings, mood, and how you want the space to feel. Below are 18 bedroom-ready colors from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, plus practical steps for comparing undertones and testing samples in your actual room before buying full-size paint.

Color descriptions such as “calming” and “restful” are design guidance, not evidence that a paint color will improve sleep. A color’s appearance can also shift with lighting and surroundings, so use the list to narrow your choices rather than treating screen previews as final.

18 bedroom paint colors to consider

Color names can look very different on a phone or computer than they do on a wall. Use this list to narrow your choices, then test the finalists in the actual bedroom.

1. White Dove OC-17 — Benjamin Moore

White Dove is a soft off-white that gives a bedroom a bright backdrop without the hard, stark appearance of some pure whites. It works particularly well with natural wood, linen bedding, black accents, and warm metal hardware. Use it on walls and trim when you want a quiet, unified envelope.

2. Pale Oak OC-20 — Benjamin Moore

Pale Oak is a light neutral for homeowners who want warmth without committing to a traditional beige. Its restrained color makes it a useful choice for bedrooms with patterned rugs, colorful art, or upholstered furniture. Compare it with your flooring before painting: warm wood can make the shade read noticeably warmer.

3. Pashmina AF-100 — Benjamin Moore

This warm taupe creates a grounded, cocoon-like setting. Pashmina is deeper and more substantial than a pale greige, making it a good fit for a bedroom that feels overly bright or visually disconnected from its furnishings. Pair it with creamy whites rather than icy whites.

4. Quiet Moments 1563 — Benjamin Moore

Quiet Moments is a gentle mix of blue and gray, with a listed light-reflectance value of 60.73. That makes it a middle-ground option: colorful enough to establish a mood, but not so saturated that it dominates the room. It suits white bedding, pale oak, brushed nickel, and muted green accents.

5. October Mist 1495 — Benjamin Moore

October Mist is a muted green for a nature-inspired bedroom. Its softened quality keeps the color from feeling overly bright, while the green adds more character than a standard neutral. It works well beside natural fibers, medium wood tones, and warm white trim.

6. Morning Dew OC-140 — Benjamin Moore

Morning Dew is a soft off-white with green and gray notes. It is a useful alternative to a straightforward warm white when you want the walls to retain a subtle connection to foliage and outdoor light. Sample it beside your trim; the green-gray undertone may become more noticeable against a yellowed white.

7. Coventry Gray HC-169 — Benjamin Moore

Coventry Gray is a midtone gray with neutral undertones. It provides more contrast and visual weight than a pale gray without moving into charcoal territory. In a bedroom with limited daylight, test it carefully: artificial light and dark furnishings can make a midtone appear heavier than expected.

8. Van Courtland Blue HC-145 — Benjamin Moore

Van Courtland Blue is a more saturated blue for walls that need a stronger point of view. Use it throughout the room for a traditional, enveloping effect, or reserve it for one wall behind the bed. Crisp trim and warm wood help keep the blue from feeling cold.

9. Porcelain 2113-60 — Benjamin Moore

Porcelain is a dusty lilac that introduces color without the intensity of a highly saturated purple. It can soften a bedroom with gray upholstery, pale pink textiles, or warm white bedding. Because lilac can shift under different bulbs, test it at night as well as during the day.

10. Crystalline AF-485 — Benjamin Moore

Crystalline is a pale green-leaning shade that brings a light, airy quality to the walls. It is suited to bedrooms where you want color but not a dramatic statement. Combine it with off-white trim and natural textures for a relaxed palette, or use darker green accents to give the pale walls definition.

11. Neutral Ground SW 7568 — Sherwin-Williams

Neutral Ground is a warm neutral that supports a cozy bedroom scheme. It is a practical choice when a bright white feels too sharp but a deeper taupe would make the room feel closed in. Sherwin-Williams includes warm whites and neutrals such as this among its bedroom expert picks.

12. Snowbound SW 7004 — Sherwin-Williams

Snowbound is a soft white that can keep a bedroom feeling clean without making it look overly sterile. It pairs well with gray, blue, black, and natural wood. Check it against your existing trim, since two nearby whites can reveal different pink, gray, or yellow undertones.

13. Sleepy Blue SW 6225 — Sherwin-Williams

Sherwin-Williams describes Sleepy Blue as a light, warm, comforting blue suitable for bedrooms and nurseries. Its lighter value makes it easier to use on all four walls than a deep blue, particularly when the room has modest daylight. Warm lamps and wood furniture can balance the cooler color family.

14. Sea Salt SW 6204 — Sherwin-Williams

Sea Salt is a green-leaning color that Sherwin-Williams positions as fresh and grounding for a restful retreat. Its appearance can change significantly with surrounding colors and lighting, sometimes reading more blue or gray than expected. Sample it beside the floor, trim, and bedding before committing.

15. Acacia Haze SW 9132 — Sherwin-Williams

Acacia Haze is a muted green with enough depth to anchor a bedroom. It is effective in rooms with white linens, woven textures, brass, or warm wood. On all four walls, it creates a more intimate feel; on a headboard wall, it supplies contrast without the intensity of a jewel tone.

16. Krypton SW 6247 — Sherwin-Williams

Krypton is a blue-gray option for a bedroom that needs color with restraint. The gray component makes it more subdued than a clear sky blue, while the blue keeps the walls from becoming flat. Use warmer white trim and textiles if the room’s daylight already feels cool.

17. Naval SW 6244 — Sherwin-Williams

Naval is a deep blue suited to an accent wall, ceiling, or fully enveloping color scheme. A dark bedroom color can create a cozy, intimate impression, but it also absorbs more visual light. If you use Naval on every wall, plan strong contrast through bedding, trim, lighting, or artwork.

18. Alabaster SW 7008 — Sherwin-Williams

Alabaster is a light neutral that can help a small bedroom appear more open. It is softer than a stark white and flexible enough to work with both cool and warm furnishings. Use it when you want the room to feel brighter while retaining some warmth.

How to choose among the 18 colors

Start with the room’s light

Face the windows and observe the room in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Natural light, window direction, nearby foliage, flooring, and artificial bulbs all affect undertones. Benjamin Moore notes that bulbs above 3,500K tend to cast cooler light, while lower color temperatures appear warmer. Benjamin Moore’s guidance on warm and cool colors explains how lighting affects color.

A blue-gray may look crisp in daylight and noticeably cooler under a daylight bulb. A taupe or warm white may become more yellow under a warm lamp. Neither result is automatically wrong; it simply needs to suit how the room is used.

Compare neutrals side by side

Never judge a white, beige, or gray in isolation. Place two or three samples together on the same wall and compare them with the trim. A white can look warmer beside a cool gray and cooler beside a creamy beige. This side-by-side test exposes undertones far faster than looking at a single swatch.

Use light and dark colors deliberately

Lighter paint does not physically enlarge a room. It can, however, make a small bedroom appear more spacious by reflecting more light and reducing visual boundaries. Darker colors can make the same room feel cozier and more intimate. Consider the effect you want rather than treating either approach as a rule.

Match the color to the furnishings

Paint should be selected with the permanent elements in view: carpet, hardwood, tile, curtains, headboard, and built-in cabinetry. Hold samples vertically near the floor and beside the trim. A color that looks balanced against a white online background may clash with orange-toned oak or a pink-beige carpet.

How to test bedroom paint before buying gallons

  1. Choose three finalists. Include at least one shade lighter or less saturated than your first choice.
  2. Use large samples. Apply brush-on samples to separate boards or large pieces of poster board, or use peel-and-stick samples. Small chips are useful for screening colors but can hide undertones. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams both recommend evaluating samples in the project space.
  3. Move the samples. Check each wall, especially the wall behind the bed and the wall opposite the window. A color may look different beside carpet, trim, and furniture.
  4. Watch them for a full day. Compare morning daylight, afternoon light, evening lamps, and the room’s lights switched on and off.
  5. Check the finish. A sample in a different sheen will not reflect light exactly like the final wall coating.
  6. Buy the full-size paint only after comparison. Manufacturer websites warn that colors displayed on screens may differ from actual paint, so a digital swatch should not be the final authority. Benjamin Moore notes this on its Quiet Moments color page.

Bedroom paint finish: what to use

For most bedroom walls, an eggshell or matte finish is a practical balance between low sheen and cleanability. Matte hides minor drywall texture and patching more effectively, while eggshell reflects a little more light and is generally easier to wipe. Use a durable satin finish selectively on trim, doors, or other areas that receive more contact; a high sheen can emphasize wall imperfections.

Use the same color on walls and ceiling when you want a continuous, enveloping effect, particularly with a muted blue, green, or taupe. A lighter ceiling can preserve brightness in a smaller room. Before painting, repair dents, sand glossy areas, clean dusty walls, and spot-prime patches so the final color does not flash unevenly.

What “calming” bedroom color really means

Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams use words such as “soothing,” “restful,” and “calming” as design descriptions. They are not clinical evidence that a specific paint color improves sleep. The most useful choice is the one that feels comfortable in your room, works with its lighting, and supports your routine. Blackout curtains, noise control, ventilation, and a suitable mattress will matter more to sleep than a particular paint code. Benjamin Moore’s soothing-bedroom guide presents color in this design context.

FAQ

What is the most relaxing color for a bedroom?

There is no universally best bedroom color. Muted blue, green, warm white, taupe, and soft gray are common choices because they create restrained palettes, but the right option depends on your lighting, furnishings, and personal preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a small bedroom be painted a light or dark color?

A light shade can make a small bedroom appear more open by reflecting more light. A dark shade can make it feel cozier and more intimate. Test both approaches if you are unsure, and consider using a dark color on one wall rather than throughout the room.

How many paint samples should I test?

Test about three finalists, including one lighter or less saturated alternative. View large samples on multiple walls during daylight and under the room’s nighttime lighting before purchasing full-size paint.

What paint sheen is best for bedroom walls?

Matte and eggshell are the usual choices. Matte hides minor surface flaws, while eggshell provides slightly more reflection and easier wipe-downs. Satin is generally better reserved for trim, doors, and higher-contact surfaces.

The Bottom Line

For a bright, flexible bedroom, start with White Dove, Snowbound, Alabaster, Pale Oak, or Neutral Ground. For muted color, compare Quiet Moments, Sleepy Blue, Sea Salt, October Mist, Crystalline, or Krypton. For a deeper, more enveloping room, consider Pashmina, Acacia Haze, Van Courtland Blue, or Naval. Whatever you choose, test it in the real room at different times of day—the wall, not the screen, makes the final decision.
