1. ChatGPT Images 2.0: best general-purpose tool for painters

ChatGPT Images 2.0 is a convenient choice if you want to talk through a visual idea rather than construct it through a long list of settings. You can ask for a landscape reference, change the weather, move the light source, simplify the background, or request alternate arrangements in the same conversation.

On the web, select More → Images, or open Images → Create Image. You can also describe an image in a normal conversation. Upload an existing image to request changes such as adding detail or text, or making the background transparent. Generated images are saved under Images; to delete one, delete the conversation where it was created. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images FAQ explains these workflows.

On mobile, open a generated image and select Edit. For a local change, choose Select, highlight the area, tap Next, and describe the edit. The selection is not exact: the model may also change nearby areas.

That makes ChatGPT particularly useful for:

• thumbnailing compositions before beginning a painting;
• testing different lighting conditions;
• turning a rough sketch into reference directions;
• removing distracting background elements;
• extending a cropped reference beyond its original edges; and
• iterating on a subject while keeping the conversation as a record of decisions.

It is less dependable when an edit must affect only a tiny, precisely defined region. Test hands, lettering, transparent backgrounds, multiple subjects, and repeated edits separately. A convincing first image does not guarantee consistency after several revisions.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all ChatGPT tiers. “Images with thinking” is currently available on Plus, Pro, and Business; Enterprise and Edu availability is listed as forthcoming. For developers, the current API model is gpt-image-2, with the dated snapshot gpt-image-2-2026-04-21. Generation uses POST /v1/images/generations; editing uses POST /v1/images/edits. 2. Midjourney V8.1: best for cinematic and painterly references

Midjourney is a strong choice when atmosphere is the priority. It is especially effective for dramatic lighting, bold color relationships, unusual environments, cinematic framing, and references with a distinctive visual language.

V8.1 was released on April 30, 2026, and became Midjourney’s default on June 10, 2026. Midjourney says standard V8.1 jobs are approximately four to five times faster than earlier versions. The model offers SD and HD output; HD creates 2K images without upscaling and uses 1.3 minutes of GPU time compared with 0.8 minutes for SD. Put parameters at the end, with a space before each dash and no punctuation inside the parameter string. Common controls include –ar for aspect ratio, –s for stylization, –chaos for variation, –seed for repeatable experiments, –no for exclusions, and –raw for less automatic styling. Add an image reference using the image icon in the Imagine bar. In Discord, paste the image URL at the beginning of the prompt. The reference guides the result rather than copying it exactly; Midjourney recommends cropping it to the target aspect ratio where possible. For V8.1 and V7, –iw controls image-reference weight from 0 to 3. See Midjourney’s image-prompt guide.

There is an important catch when revising a reference: the Midjourney Editor currently uses V6.1. Opening a V8.1 image in the Editor does not mean the edit is performed by V8.1. Images made with Omni Reference can only be opened in the full Edit tab; remove Omni Reference and –ow before submitting an edit. See the Editor documentation.

To generate an image, use Firefly homepage → Image → Generate image. Enter a prompt, open General settings, choose a model, and select Generate. Standard aspect-ratio options are landscape 4:3, portrait 3:4, square 1:1, widescreen 16:9, and vertical 9:16. Vertical output is available for Firefly Image 4 and Image 4 Ultra. Firefly offers Adobe and partner models, including Imagen 4, FLUX, GPT Image, Ideogram 3.0, and Runway Gen-4 Image. Available controls, costs, and reference-image support depend on the selected model; for example, Adobe’s documented Imagen workflow supports reference images with Imagen 3, not Imagen 4. 4. Ideogram 4.0: best for lettering, posters, and layout studies

Ideogram 4.0 is a strong candidate when words are part of the image: poster studies, sign painting, packaging mock-ups, title cards, logos, and compositions with several designed text blocks.

Released on June 3, 2026, Ideogram 4.0 is an open-weight model with a commercial license. Ideogram documents multilingual text rendering, bounding-box layout control, 2K photorealistic output, color-palette conditioning, hosted and API access, and downloadable weights. For painters, the practical benefit is testing how lettering interacts with a composition before committing paint to a surface. Try a single-word logo, a multi-line poster, a bilingual sign, packaging with small copy, and a design containing several text blocks. Check spelling, punctuation, line breaks, prices, and URLs manually; a successful sample is not proof of reliable small-size lettering.

Ideogram’s reference pipeline supports typed text elements and bounding boxes in the format [y_min, x_min, y_max, x_max], with coordinates normalized from 0 to 1,000. This offers a more structured approach than a generic prompt asking for “text in the upper left.”

Ideogram 4.0 is not simply Ideogram 3 with improved text: it is a new open-weight release positioned around typography, layout, and brand fidelity. The hosted product and downloadable model may require different technical workflows. See the technical overview.

5. Google Imagen 4: best dedicated generation API

Imagen 4 suits a focused text-to-image workflow through Google Cloud rather than a conversational studio. The generally available model ID is imagen-4.0-generate-001.

In Google Cloud Console, open Vertex AI → Media Studio → Image, choose the model, configure settings, and generate. Do not choose Imagen 4 for a workflow built around local corrections. Google documents mask-based and mask-free editing, object insertion and removal, outpainting, product-image editing, upscaling, subject customization, style customization, and negative prompting as unsupported for this generation model. Google’s Imagen 4 model documentation lists the supported and unsupported capabilities.

Imagen 4 can still be useful for generating batches of lighting or composition references, but it is less suitable than an editing-focused tool when the job is to keep everything else unchanged and fix one area.

6. Recraft V4.1: best for vectors and design assets

Recraft V4.1 is aimed more at graphic design than painterly reference generation. Consider it for icons, labels, flat illustrations, logos, printable motifs, and assets that need to remain editable.

The family includes V4.1, V4.1 Vector, V4.1 Pro, V4.1 Pro Vector, V4.1 Utility, and Utility Vector variants, as well as Utility Pro variants. The main V4.1 line is more expressive; Utility models are intended for simpler, more predictable compositions. Vector models produce SVG output. Be careful with older tutorials. Named styles such as Photorealism, Illustration, and Vector art are legacy controls for V2 and V3; they are not supported on V4 or V4.1. For current models, describe the visual treatment in the prompt or switch to an older model when a specific legacy style control is essential. See Recraft’s style documentation.

A fair comparison requires more than asking every tool for “a beautiful landscape.” Use the same prompt set and record the model, version, plan, date, aspect ratio, resolution, seed where available, and number of attempts.

1. Photorealism: generate people, interiors, food, and products.
2. Composition: request a specific focal point, horizon position, negative space, and aspect ratio.
3. Lighting: compare dawn, midday, candlelight, and overcast conditions.
4. Typography: test a logo, poster, package label, bilingual sign, and small printed copy.
5. Editing: remove, replace, recolor, extend, and preserve an object.
6. Consistency: regenerate the same person, character, or object several times.
