Best choices for beginners
1. Simple Coasters

Laminate Coasters: a more protective surface
Laminate Coasters use two 4½-inch fabric squares, two 4½-inch squares of iron-on vinyl, batting, and pinking shears. The vinyl is pressed onto the fabric through a protective layer, then the laminated fabric is sewn with the other layers.
This approach is useful when you want a coaster that resists surface moisture more readily than ordinary uncoated cotton. Follow the project’s pressing instructions carefully: iron-on vinyl should not be placed directly under a hot iron. The listed supplies also include a Size-90 needle and thread. Pinking shears finish the edge with a zigzag cut.
Vinyl changes the handling of fabric. It can make pieces less flexible and may affect how easily layers feed through a sewing machine. Sew slowly, avoid unnecessary pinholes in the laminated area, and test your pressing setup on a scrap if the instructions permit.
Wine Glass Coaster
The Wine Glass Coaster is a 4½-inch-diameter circular design made from five 6-inch fabric circles. Folded circles are layered so the center opening accommodates a wine-glass stem, and the outer edge is sewn.

Interfacing is not the same as fusible web: interfacing stabilizes fabric, while fusible web is commonly used to bond appliqué shapes. Read the pattern’s material list so you purchase the intended product.
Materials checklist
You will not need everything below for every pattern. Start with the individual project instructions, then gather only what that design specifies.
- Cotton quilting fabric: the main material across the collection. Scraps, strips, small squares, novelty prints, and coordinated prints are all useful. Cotton quilting fabric is especially practical because small cuts are needed for many of these designs.
