Affinity by Canva is the best broad Photoshop alternative for most people in 2026, while GIMP is the strongest free and open-source choice. Photopea is the closest browser-based substitute, Krita and Clip Studio Paint are better for digital painting and comics, and Capture One, DxO PhotoLab, or ON1 Photo RAW make more sense for serious photographers.

There is no exact one-for-one Photoshop replacement. Photoshop combines pixel editing, compositing, typography, illustration, RAW support, automation, plugins, and AI tools; most competitors specialize in only some of those jobs. The right choice depends on whether you edit photographs, paint, design graphics, work with PSD files, or need a simple browser tool.

“Photoshop alternative” can mean three different things:

  • Direct replacement: a layer-based editor with masks, selections, compositing, text, and filters.
  • Specialist replacement: an application that is better for one job, such as RAW development or painting.
  • Simpler substitute: a tool for quick corrections, templates, resizing, or social content.

Canva, Adobe Express, Fotor, and BeFunky are useful alternatives for particular tasks, but they are not equivalent to Photoshop’s full pixel-editing and compositing workflow.

The 19 best Photoshop alternatives

1. Affinity by Canva — best broad Photoshop replacement

Best for: Designers, photographers, illustrators, and users who want raster, vector, and layout tools without the traditional Adobe subscription model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current Affinity product line is important because older articles are now out of date. Canva has consolidated the former Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher products into a unified Affinity application and announced a free core application. Canva AI features may involve a separate Canva subscription.

Affinity is the closest all-round choice for many former Photoshop users: it offers layers, masks, selections, typography, compositing, vector work, and page-layout capabilities. However, PSD compatibility is not guaranteed to be perfect. Smart Objects, plugins, actions, complex layer effects, fonts, and adjustment behavior should be tested before switching. Confirm current Windows, macOS, and iPad availability on the official site.

2. GIMP — best free and open-source desktop editor

Best for: Budget-conscious users, Linux users, students, and anyone who wants local editing without a subscription.

GIMP supports Windows, macOS, and Linux and includes layers, masks, paths, selections, filters, scripting, and plugins. It is powerful enough for extensive photo manipulation and many design tasks. The interface, terminology, and some workflows differ substantially from Photoshop, and certain professional publishing or color-managed tasks may require additional setup. GIMP can open many PSD files, but complicated documents should be checked individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Photopea — best browser-based Photoshop substitute

Best for: Occasional edits, school or work computers, and users who need to open PSD files without installing software.

Photopea has a Photoshop-like interface and supports common raster formats and many PSD workflows. It is convenient across operating systems, but browser performance depends on device memory, browser limits, and network conditions. Large files can be uncomfortable, free use may include advertising, and cloud or account behavior should be reviewed before handling confidential images.

4. Krita — best for digital painting

Best for: Concept art, illustration, comics, animation, and pen-display users.

Krita is free and open source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its brush engine, stabilizers, assistants, animation tools, and painting-focused workspace make it one of the strongest Photoshop alternatives for artists. It is not primarily a RAW developer, photo catalog, or print-production application, and complex PSD files should be tested rather than assumed compatible.

5. Pixelmator Pro — best Mac-native photo editor

Best for: Mac users who value a polished native interface and Apple ecosystem integration.

Pixelmator Pro combines photo editing, compositing, vector shapes, text, and machine-learning tools. Its main limitation is platform coverage: it is a poor fit for Windows, Linux, or mixed-platform teams. Check Apple’s current purchase model and system requirements before committing.

6. Corel PaintShop Pro — best Windows perpetual-license option

Best for: Windows photographers and hobbyists who prefer a traditional desktop license.

PaintShop Pro provides photo correction, layers, selections, effects, RAW support, and design tools. It is positioned as subscription-free, but edition details, upgrades, and availability can vary. It is Windows-only and does not offer the cross-platform flexibility of Affinity or GIMP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. ON1 Photo RAW — best all-in-one photographer workflow

Best for: Photographers who want RAW development, organization, retouching, effects, and layers in one application.

ON1 Photo RAW combines cataloging, non-destructive photo editing, effects, and pixel-based work for Mac and Windows. Its purchase options can include perpetual and subscription-related editions. It is more photography-oriented than design-oriented, so it should not be chosen for advanced typography, page layout, or every Photoshop compositing feature.

8. Capture One — best for professional RAW and color workflows

Best for: Studio, commercial, portrait, and serious enthusiast photographers.

Capture One is built around RAW processing, color control, catalog or session workflows, tethering, and professional photographic output. It can replace much of a Lightroom-and-Photoshop photography workflow, but it is not a general illustration or graphic-design application. Review the current pricing and licensing options for your region.

9. DxO PhotoLab — best for optical correction and noise reduction

Best for: Photographers prioritizing lens corrections, RAW quality, and high-ISO noise reduction.

DxO PhotoLab uses camera-and-lens correction profiles and offers a strong RAW workflow. Its central strengths are optical correction and photographic quality, not Photoshop-style layer compositing, illustration, or typography. Check whether your camera and lens combination is supported.

10. Luminar Neo — best simplified AI-assisted photo editor

Best for: Users who want quick portrait, sky, lighting, and enhancement tools.

Luminar Neo emphasizes accessible controls and automated or AI-assisted edits. Its licensing, upgrades, and subscription offers can change, and users who want precise manual control may prefer Affinity, GIMP, or a dedicated RAW developer. It is not a full replacement for Photoshop’s design and compositing toolset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. darktable — best open-source RAW workflow

Best for: Linux users and photographers who want a free local RAW developer with cataloging and batch tools.

darktable provides non-destructive RAW editing, photo management, and batch-oriented processing. It is a serious photography application, but its learning curve is steeper and it is not a layer-based Photoshop compositor. Pair it with GIMP or Krita when you need extensive pixel editing.

12. RawTherapee — best technical free RAW developer

Best for: Advanced photographers who want detailed control over RAW rendering.

RawTherapee is free, open source, and highly configurable. It is designed for technical RAW processing rather than layers, typography, or compositing, so most users will pair it with another editor for finishing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Pixlr — best quick online editor for social content

Best for: Browser-based edits, thumbnails, social graphics, and casual corrections.

Pixlr is easier to start with than a full desktop editor and combines photo-editing and design features. Review the current pricing page for advertising, export, and AI restrictions. It is not intended to replace a professional Photoshop workflow involving large files, complex masks, or print production.

14. Canva — best for templates and collaborative design

Best for: Social posts, presentations, marketing materials, thumbnails, and teams without specialist design training.

Canva excels at templates, layout, typography, collaboration, and cloud sharing. It is not a pixel-perfect Photoshop replacement, depends more heavily on accounts and cloud workflows, and may place premium assets or advanced AI features behind paid plans.

15. Adobe Express — best simple Adobe alternative

Best for: Quick social content, resizing, background removal, and template-based work.

Adobe Express offers simple browser and mobile workflows and connects with Adobe’s ecosystem. It can replace some everyday Photoshop tasks, but it is still an Adobe product and does not provide Photoshop’s advanced layer editing, compositing, or automation.

16. Fotor — best beginner-oriented online enhancement

Best for: Portrait enhancement, collages, quick corrections, and simple AI-assisted edits.

Fotor is accessible on the web and mobile, with automated enhancement and ready-made effects. Its paid boundaries, AI credits, export rules, and commercial-use terms should be checked before professional use. It is not designed for high-end print or complex layered work.

17. BeFunky — best for simple effects and collages

Best for: Casual users, collages, social images, and quick stylized edits.

BeFunky has a beginner-friendly browser workflow, but limited professional compositing, RAW, CMYK, and PSD capabilities make it unsuitable as a general Photoshop replacement.

18. Clip Studio Paint — best for comics and illustration production

Best for: Comic artists, manga creators, illustrators, and animation-oriented artists.

Clip Studio Paint specializes in brushes, inking, panels, speech balloons, vector layers, 3D references, and animation. It is often a better tool than Photoshop for comic production, but it is not primarily a photo editor. Editions and platform licensing differ, so check the current terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

19. MediBang Paint — best lightweight comic-art option

Best for: Beginners and comic artists who want an accessible drawing application.

MediBang Paint offers drawing, comic panels, brushes, and mobile-oriented workflows. It is useful for lightweight illustration, but not for professional photo retouching, RAW development, or complex print production.

Free, paid, perpetual, or subscription?

Compare the whole cost model, not just the download price:

  • Free and open source: GIMP, Krita, darktable, and RawTherapee.
  • Free core or freemium: Affinity, Photopea, Pixlr, Canva, Adobe Express, Fotor, and some mobile tools may reserve AI, assets, exports, storage, or collaboration for paid plans.
  • Perpetual license: PaintShop Pro and some photography or Mac applications may offer a one-time purchase, but major upgrades can cost extra.
  • Subscription or changing license options: Capture One, Luminar Neo, ON1, Clip Studio Paint, and others require checking the current edition and region.

A one-time purchase is not automatically cheaper forever: include upgrade charges, separate mobile licenses, plugins, cloud storage, training, and migration time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PSD compatibility: the most common switching trap

“Supports PSD” usually means that an application can open or export a Photoshop file—not that every editable feature will survive a round trip. Basic raster layers may transfer well, while Smart Objects, embedded documents, adjustment layers, layer styles, masks, clipping groups, text, artboards, linked assets, blend modes, and third-party plugins may change or flatten.

Before switching, test these representative documents:

  1. A layered composite.
  2. A file with adjustment layers and masks.
  3. A document using Smart Objects or embedded files.
  4. A design containing custom fonts and layer styles.
  5. A client or print file containing artboards, profiles, or automation.

Also verify 16-bit and 32-bit workflows, CMYK, spot colors, ICC profiles, animation or video timelines, Photoshop plugins, actions, scripts, and linked assets. Keep Photoshop or another known-good fallback until your important files have been checked.

Photography: editor versus RAW workflow

Photographers should separate five jobs: RAW development, cataloging, batch processing, pixel retouching, and compositing. Capture One is strong for color, tethering, and studio workflows; DxO PhotoLab emphasizes optical corrections and noise reduction; ON1 Photo RAW combines management and editing; darktable and RawTherapee provide free local RAW workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIMP, Canva, and Photopea may be useful after a photo has been rendered, but they should not automatically be treated as a professional RAW-management replacement. Check camera support, lens profiles, non-destructive local adjustments, batch export, panorama and HDR tools, print preparation, and catalog performance.

Painting and illustration: choose a tool built for the brush

For digital painting, Krita is the strongest free general recommendation. Clip Studio Paint is particularly compelling for comics, manga, inking, panels, speech balloons, 3D references, and animation. MediBang Paint is a lighter entry point. Photoshop can paint, but a specialist application may provide better brush behavior, stabilizers, perspective assistance, and comic-production tools.

Desktop, browser, mobile, and Linux considerations

Native applications generally offer more predictable offline access, file handling, color management, and performance. Browser editors are convenient and work across operating systems, but large documents are limited by browser memory, device hardware, network access, and account or storage policies. Cloud-based AI tools may upload images for processing, so do not assume browser editing is private or offline.

For Linux, the practical native shortlist is GIMP, Krita, darktable, and RawTherapee; Photopea, Pixlr, Canva, and Adobe Express work through a browser. Do not assume that Windows or macOS commercial applications run natively on Linux. For iPad and Android, verify the exact edition and feature parity rather than relying on the desktop product name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older computers may benefit from a lightweight native application, although modern RAW and AI features can still require substantial RAM, GPU support, or a recent operating system. Photoshop’s own requirements are version-specific; use Adobe’s current technical-requirements page only as a comparison baseline.

AI features and privacy

AI claims need careful checking. Background removal, subject selection, object removal, upscaling, denoising, face retouching, generative fill, and text-to-image features may differ in whether they are local or cloud-processed, included or credit-metered, free or subscription-only, and stored or deleted after processing.

Before using AI on client or sensitive images, check commercial-use terms, data retention, training policies, provenance or content credentials, watermarks, credit limits, and whether the feature is available in the plan you are considering. Affinity’s core application being free does not automatically mean Canva AI or premium Canva assets are free.

Migration checklist

  1. Back up your original PSD, RAW, and project files.
  2. Install or trial the candidate application.
  3. Open five representative documents, not just a simple image.
  4. Check fonts, masks, blend modes, Smart Objects, layer styles, and adjustment layers.
  5. Export to the formats required by clients, printers, websites, or collaborators.
  6. Rebuild important actions, scripts, presets, brushes, and automation.
  7. Confirm commercial-use, cloud-storage, and AI-processing policies.
  8. Keep the existing workflow available until the new application passes real work.

Final recommendation matrix

  • Choose Affinity for the broadest non-Adobe desktop replacement.
  • Choose GIMP for free, open-source, local editing—especially on Linux.
  • Choose Photopea when browser access and PSD editing matter most.
  • Choose Krita for free digital painting and illustration.
  • Choose Clip Studio Paint for comics, manga, and production illustration.
  • Choose Capture One for professional color and tethered RAW photography.
  • Choose DxO PhotoLab for optical correction and noise reduction.
  • Choose ON1 Photo RAW for an all-in-one photographer workflow.
  • Choose Pixelmator Pro for polished Mac-native editing.
  • Choose PaintShop Pro for Windows users who prefer a perpetual-license model.
  • Choose Canva or Adobe Express for templates, collaboration, and quick social content—not advanced compositing.
