For a first bed pillowcase, start with a basic banded case or a burrito-style pattern. The Hello Sewing burrito pillowcase, AllPeopleQuilt Basic Pillowcase, and SewCanShe one-yard magic pillowcase are practical starting points. Choose a queen or king pattern when needed, and measure the actual pillow before cutting: a label such as “standard” or “queen” does not guarantee that every pattern will fit every insert.

This collection includes free bed-pillowcase patterns, burrito and French-seam tutorials, patchwork cuffs, ruffles, piping, appliqué, travel cases, plush-fabric options, decorative covers, and related projects. A few popular roundup entries are actually a sham, bag, dress, or PJ bag, so they are clearly separated below.

Table of Contents

First, decide which kind of pillow project you need

The word pillowcase is used loosely online. A bed pillowcase is a slip-style case for a sleeping pillow, usually with an open cuff, an enclosed end, or an envelope flap. A burrito, magic, hot-dog, or roll-it-up pillowcase describes a construction method: the fabrics are rolled together so the cuff seam is enclosed inside the finished case.

An envelope pillow cover is usually a decorative cushion cover with overlapping back panels. A pillow sham is a decorative cover that may include flanges, quilting, a separate backing, lining, binding, or a closure. A pillowcase dress is children’s clothing, while a pillowcase gift bag or PJ bag is a storage or drawstring project. These adjacent projects appear in some pillowcase roundups, but they are not interchangeable with bedding.

Pillowcase sizes: measure the insert, not just the label

Common U.S. pillow-insert dimensions are:

Pillow type Common insert size
Standard 20 × 26 inches
Queen 20 × 30 inches
King 20 × 36 inches
Travel example 16 × 12 inches

These are starting points rather than universal finished-case measurements. Purl Soho and Matteo use the standard, queen, and king insert sizes above, but patterns add ease, hems, cuffs, flanges, envelope overlap, and seam allowances differently.

For example, Spruce & Fjell lists finished cases of 21 × 32, 21 × 36, and 21 × 42 inches for standard, queen, and king pillows. The AllPeopleQuilt basic standard pattern finishes at approximately 30 × 20 inches, while its decorative cases may finish around 30¾ × 20½ or 30¾ × 21 inches.

Retail bedding labels can differ as well: some charts list pillowcases as 20 × 30 or 20 × 40 inches. Compare the chosen pattern’s finished dimensions with your pillow rather than combining measurements from different tutorials. A thick, firm, memory-foam, or unusually lofty pillow may need more ease than a flat polyester-fill insert.

In the U.K., common pillowcase sizes are approximately 50 × 75 cm, 50 × 90 cm, and 65 × 65 cm for standard, king, and square cases. A U.S. “standard” pattern should not automatically be assumed to fit an international pillow; use the regional size guide and measure the insert.

Best beginner pillowcase patterns

1. Basic Pillowcase Pattern — the straightforward choice

Open the free Basic Pillowcase PDF. This is a simple contrasting-band bed pillowcase. The pattern makes two contrasting standard cases from 1⅛ yards of each of two fabrics, assuming 42 inches of usable width. It is a sensible first project because the band construction is uncomplicated and the PDF states the cutting and finishing information directly.

2. Roll It Up Pillowcase — the enclosed-cuff method

Open the Roll It Up Pillowcase PDF. The body is rolled into the cuff before the long seam is sewn, then pulled through the tube. The result hides the cuff seam inside the case. The standard version finishes at approximately 30 × 20 inches and uses a French-seam-style enclosed finish. It is also called a magic, burrito, or hot-dog pillowcase.

AllPeopleQuilt also provides a Superhero version and a Floral version. The Superhero PDF includes extra photographs aimed at children and beginners, but the two Kids’ Style downloads use the same basic method in different fabric presentations. They should be treated as visual variations, not three completely different constructions.

3. Hello Sewing Burrito Pillowcase — three sizes and written guidance

Follow Hello Sewing’s burrito pillowcase tutorial. It includes standard, queen, and king variations, written instructions, and video support. Its side and bottom seams can be finished as French seams, making it useful for frequent-wash sleeping cases when a serger is not available. The tutorial’s standard-size chart uses a 27 × 43-inch main piece and an 11 × 43-inch cuff piece; use its complete size chart rather than scaling those standard measurements yourself.

4. SewCanShe One-Yard Magic Pillowcase — stash-friendly

Download the SewCanShe One-Yard Magic Pillowcase. It is designed to use exactly one yard with no fabric waste and makes a 20 × 30-inch standard case. That finished size may fit some queen pillows, but do not rely on the word “queen” without measuring your insert. Directional fabric, unusual width, and matching prints can also change the cutting plan.

5. USU Designer Pillowcase — a useful cutting chart

Use the Utah State University Extension Designer Pillowcase instructions for a banded case with clear grain and cutting guidance. It cuts the body at 27 × 42 inches for standard, 31 × 42 for queen, and 37 × 42 for king, plus a 9 × 42-inch border strip. The instructions also explain prewashing and warn against catching the rolled body in the cuff seam.

6. Purl Soho Pillowcases for Every Bed — plain or contrasting edge

See Purl Soho’s pillowcases for every bed for standard, queen, and king options. The tutorial includes plain and contrasting-edge versions, an envelope-fold cuff, and French seams. It is a good option when you want one source covering multiple bed sizes without adding patchwork.

7. Beginner Sewing Projects Pillowcase — simple one-yard approach

Open the Beginner Sewing Projects tutorial for a very simple construction presenting standard, queen, and king dimensions. Check the tutorial’s finished measurements carefully before cutting, especially if your pillow is full or oversized; the important point is to follow one complete size chart rather than mixing it with another source’s seam allowances.

8. Sew What, Alicia Custom Pillow Cases — easy adjustment

Use Sew What, Alicia’s custom pillowcase tutorial for a one-yard case with an optional French-seam finish. It is particularly useful when a pillow is shorter or longer than a standard retail insert because the tutorial explains how to adjust the case instead of forcing it into a standard label.

9. The Sewing Directory Pillowcase — draft from a case you own

Follow The Sewing Directory’s simple pillowcase project for a hemmed opening with an overlapping flap. It recommends prewashing and explains how to draft pieces from an existing pillowcase, which is helpful when no printable pattern fits the pillow in your home.

10. Crazy Little Projects French-Seam Option

See the Crazy Little Projects pillowcase tutorial for a beginner-oriented case with a French-seam option. It is a useful alternative if you prefer a visual tutorial and want to compare a simpler assembly with an enclosed raw-edge finish.

11. AppleGreen Cottage Smart Pillowcase

Open AppleGreen Cottage’s pillowcase tutorial for an alternative “smart way” of assembling a bed case. Compare its cutting chart and seam allowances with your fabric width before starting; the construction method is more important than the retailer’s size label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Life Sew Savory Pillowcase — suitable for charity planning

See Life Sew Savory’s pillowcase tutorial for a beginner-friendly approach with charity-sewing context. Treat “charity-friendly” as a project use, not as proof that every organization will accept the finished case; recipient requirements always control.

Patchwork and quilt-inspired pillowcases

These projects keep the basic pillowcase assembly manageable but add a piecing stage. They are excellent for quilt leftovers, coordinated bedding, and small blocks, though the patchwork may be intermediate even when the final case construction is simple. Press carefully, trim the finished band to the body width, and use a consistent seam allowance.

For the most scrap-efficient choices, begin with Simply Squares or Checkerboard. For a more obviously quilted look, choose Sawtooth Star, Pinwheel, Mini Star, or Show the Love. The small-block designs require more pressing, trimming, and accuracy than a plain band.

Trim and embellishment patterns

Decorative details turn a basic case into a gift, child’s project, or quilt-matching accessory. They also add construction steps that are worth planning for.

For appliqué, follow the fusible-web manufacturer’s pressing instructions. For piping and prairie points, baste or clip the trim before the final seam so it cannot shift into the seam allowance.

Special fabrics and unusual sizes

Travel pillowcase

Download the AllPeopleQuilt Travel Pillowcase. It finishes at 18 × 13 inches and is designed for a 16 × 12-inch travel pillow. The pattern includes piping. Do not substitute a standard pillowcase chart for a travel pillow: the proportions are different.

Plush and minky

Use the AllPeopleQuilt Plush Fabric Pillowcase when working with plush fabric; it assumes 58/60-inch-wide plush and finishes at 30 × 20 inches. Plush and minky can be bulky, shed, stretch, and shift under the presser foot. A pattern written specifically for that fabric is safer than blindly transferring a quilting-cotton pattern.

For a decorative rather than sleeping cover, see the Shannon Fabrics Cuddle Minky pillow sham. It is an envelope-back sham designed for Cuddle or minky fabric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Silk and satin

Discovery Fabrics’ free pillow-case tutorial includes both an invisible-zipper version and an envelope-fold version and is specifically useful for silk-oriented sewing. Silk and satin are slippery, so use fine pins or clips where appropriate, stabilize the fabric if the tutorial recommends it, and follow the fabric’s care instructions.

Linen, flannel, and old sheets

Quilting cotton is the easiest default: it is a washable woven fabric that cuts and presses predictably. Flannel is comfortable but can shrink and behave differently from quilting cotton. Linen is breathable but can wrinkle and fray more readily. Clean, sound old sheets can be economical upcycled fabric if they are prewashed and not worn thin.

The USU Extension instructions identify 100% cotton as a good pillowcase choice. Mixed fabrics should be prewashed together when possible; otherwise, different shrinkage rates may distort the finished case.

How much fabric do you need?

There is no single yardage answer. Requirements change with pillow size, fabric width, cuff or trim, directional prints, patchwork, and whether the pattern makes one case or two. Check the pattern’s width-of-fabric assumption before purchasing.

Create Whimsy example 27 × 45 body, 4 × 45 trim, and 12 × 45 cuff for a standard example Fabric widths vary by manufacturer

Many patterns assume 42, 44, or 45 inches of usable width after the selvages are removed. If your fabric is narrower, the case is king-size, or the design must run in one direction, buy extra fabric or verify the cutting layout before cutting.

Universal burrito-method walkthrough

Use the measurements from one complete burrito pattern; do not combine the seam allowances or cutting dimensions from several tutorials. This sequence follows the common construction explained by Create Whimsy, Hello Sewing, and USU Extension.

  1. Prewash, dry, and press all fabrics. Trim the edges square and identify the grain.
  2. Cut the body, cuff, and optional trim according to the selected pattern.
  3. Prepare the trim by pressing it lengthwise if the pattern calls for a folded strip.
  4. Place the cuff right side up. Layer the trim and body according to the pattern’s right-side and wrong-side instructions.
  5. Roll the body toward the cuff. Do not roll the cuff itself; the body should form a compact tube inside the cuff layers.
  6. Wrap the remaining cuff edge around the roll so the raw edges align.
  7. Pin or clip the entire long edge. Check that every layer is aligned and that the body roll is clear of the stitching path.
  8. Sew the long edge using the selected pattern’s seam allowance.
  9. Pull the body through the tube to turn the cuff right side out. Press the cuff and trim flat.
  10. Fold the case for the side and bottom seams. Finish those seams with the pattern’s French seam, zigzag, or serger method.
  11. Press and inspect the finished case. Check the cuff seam, opening, print direction, and finished dimensions before inserting the pillow.

The burrito technique hides the cuff seam because the body is rolled inside the cuff before that long seam is stitched. It is polished without requiring a serger, but the layers must be arranged correctly.

French seams, simple hems, envelopes, and zippers

French seams

French seams enclose raw edges inside a second seam. In the Hello Sewing method, the first side and bottom seams are sewn with wrong sides together using a scant quarter-inch seam, the seam is trimmed, and the case is turned so the second seam encloses the raw edge. Other patterns use different allowances—for example, a quarter-inch first seam followed by a half-inch enclosing seam—so preserve the allowances in the linked instructions rather than merging methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

French seams are a good choice for washable sleeping cases made from lightweight or medium-weight woven fabric. They can become bulky in plush fabric, thick flannel, or heavily pieced bands; a zigzag or serger finish may be more practical there.

Simple hemmed case

A simple hemmed case is the fastest approach when you have one fabric and do not need a contrasting cuff. The Sewing Directory uses a larger hemmed opening and an overlapping flap. This is easy to draft from a case you already own, but it does not have the hidden cuff seam of a burrito case.

Envelope-back cover

An envelope cover is designed for a decorative cushion, pet bed, or removable throw-pillow cover. The Spruce & Fjell envelope-back version uses three pieces and closes at the back. I Can Sew This recommends adding approximately 1½ inches to the insert dimensions for cover pieces and adding extra width for the overlap; its example uses a flap between 5 and 7 inches. Those are decorative-cover drafting instructions, not universal bed-pillowcase dimensions.

Invisible zipper

An invisible zipper gives a decorative cover a fully enclosed, fitted appearance and is useful when you are comfortable with a zipper foot. The Discovery Fabrics tutorial provides both zipper and envelope versions.

Directional prints: check before cutting

One-way prints can end up sideways in a burrito case because the body is rolled and folded during construction. Create Whimsy specifically documents this problem with directional dog fabric.

Before cutting, identify the top, bottom, and opening of the finished case. A directional print may require more fabric or a different cutting layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nondirectional prints are the easiest choice for a first burrito case. If the design must run parallel to the selvage, lay out every piece before cutting and verify that the cuff, body, and opening will face the intended direction.

Supplies and fabric preparation

  • Washable woven fabric, such as quilting cotton or lightweight-to-midweight cotton.
  • Matching all-purpose thread.
  • Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat.
  • Pins or sewing clips.
  • An iron and pressing surface.
  • A seam ripper for correcting the inevitable misaligned layer.
  • Optional: piping cord or purchased piping, fusible web, a zipper foot, batting, or a serger.

Wash, dry, and press fabric before cutting, especially cotton, flannel, and mixed-fabric projects. Prewashing reduces first-laundering shrinkage, exposes unstable fabric, and helps return the cloth to a usable grain. Prewash compatible fabrics together when possible so the body and cuff shrink similarly.

Quilting cotton is the best general-purpose choice because it is crisp and easy to cut. Flannel is cozy but may shrink more and can be harder to control. Plush and minky are bulky and prone to shifting. Silk and satin are slippery and less forgiving for beginners. Linen is attractive and breathable but wrinkles and frays more readily. Old sheets can work for economical cases if they are clean, strong, and prewashed.

Troubleshooting the burrito method

If the cuff is inside out

Before sewing the long edge, confirm that the cuff’s right side faces up and that the body is layered exactly as the pattern specifies. If the seam is already sewn, unpick it and rebuild the roll rather than trying to turn the finished cuff through the wrong opening.

If the body was caught in the cuff seam

Unpick the seam. The rolled body must remain inside the tube but outside the stitching path. Sew only the aligned long-edge layers; this is the specific mistake warned about in the USU instructions.

If the cuff seam is wavy

Reduce bulk, align the narrowest fabric edge carefully, use clips instead of pins, and press the cuff before closing the side seams. A pieced or heavily embellished band may need extra trimming to match the body width.

If the print is sideways

The fabric was oriented incorrectly before cutting or rolling. The reliable fix is to recut the affected piece if possible; otherwise reserve the result for a case where the direction is acceptable.

If the French seam is bulky

Use a zigzag or serger finish for plush, thick flannel, or heavily pieced bands. Do not force a narrow French seam through multiple bulky layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the finished case is too tight

Check the pattern’s finished dimensions, fabric-width assumption, seam allowances, and whether the selvages were trimmed. A thick pillow needs more ease than a flat insert, and a 42-inch layout may not work on narrower fabric.

If the finished case is too loose

Measure the actual insert, including its loft, rather than relying only on “standard,” “queen,” or “king.” A case that fits a thin 20 × 26-inch pillow may look loose on a different insert with a smaller body or different fill.

Charity sewing: verify the recipient’s rules

A plain cotton pillowcase can be a useful charity project, but no pattern is automatically accepted by every organization. Confirm the required size, fabric, laundering, packaging, and design rules before sewing a batch.

For example, Ryan’s Case for Smiles specifies 100% cotton, prohibits glitter fabric and no-sew pillowcases, and notes that local hospitals may reject flannel, red fabric that bleeds, or seasonal designs. Its specified standard pillowcase size is 20 × 26 inches. Other hospitals and charities may have different rules.

The One Million Pillowcase Challenge reached its one-million-case goal in December 2020 but continues to encourage sewing and donation. It also advises makers to check the intended organization’s requirements. For batch sewing, a plain burrito or basic case is usually easier to cut, sew, inspect, and launder than a heavily embellished design.

What “free pattern” permits

Free normally means free for the reader to view or download. It does not necessarily mean that the pattern may be rehosted, printed for resale, redistributed, or used to produce items for sale.

  • Use the original creator’s page or direct PDF link.
  • Do not embed, repackage, or reproduce a complete pattern in this article or in a download of your own.
  • Credit the designer or publisher when sharing the project.
  • Do not claim that finished cases may be sold unless the creator explicitly grants that permission.
  • Check whether a nominally free tutorial requires an email address or checkout step; access terms can change.

The AllPeopleQuilt PDFs, including the Roll It Up Superhero PDF and Basic Pillowcase PDF, state personal-use restrictions. Follow the terms shown on each original source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a standard pillowcase fit a queen pillow?

Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. A common standard insert is 20 × 26 inches and a queen insert is 20 × 30 inches. Some one-yard patterns may fit some queen pillows, but compare the pattern’s finished dimensions with the actual pillow’s length and loft before cutting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a pillow sham the same as a bed pillowcase?

No. A sham is usually a decorative cover and may have flanges, quilting, a backing, lining, binding, or an envelope closure. A bed pillowcase is generally a simpler slip-style case intended for sleeping pillows.

Do I need a serger to make a pillowcase?

No. A burrito construction with French seams can enclose raw edges using a regular sewing machine. A zigzag finish or serger may be more practical than a narrow French seam for bulky plush, thick flannel, or heavily pieced fabric.

Can I sell pillowcases made from a free pattern?

Only if the pattern’s creator permits commercial use. Free downloading is not the same as permission to sell finished items. Check the original pattern’s license and personal-use notice.

Why did my directional print turn sideways?

Burrito construction rolls and folds the body fabric, so a one-way print can be oriented incorrectly before sewing. Identify the finished case’s top, bottom, and opening before cutting, and use a directional layout when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the safest first project, choose a basic or burrito-style case in prewashed quilting cotton and follow one pattern’s complete measurements from start to finish. Measure the actual pillow, check the fabric-width assumption, and plan directional prints before cutting. Then move to ruffles, piping, appliqué, or patchwork bands once the basic construction is familiar.
