Scribus 1.6.6 is free, open-source desktop-publishing software. As of August 10, 2026, it is the current stable release in the 1.6.x series. Download it from the Scribus 1.6.6 project directory, which contains installers for Windows, Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, a Linux x86_64 AppImage, and source archives.

Choose the file that matches your operating system and processor architecture. Windows users will usually want the 64-bit installer; Apple Silicon Macs need the arm64 DMG; Intel Macs need the DMG without arm64 in its name. Do not confuse the stable 1.6.6 directory with the separate 1.7.x development or SVN folders.

Scribus’s official downloads page currently directs users toward the project’s public SourceForge files. The direct 1.6.6 directory is the most practical route because it shows the exact filenames and architectures rather than relying on a generic download button.

Choose the correct Scribus 1.6.6 download

Platform File Approximate size Choose it when
Windows 64-bit scribus-1.6.6-windows-x64.exe 124.3 MB Windows is installed as 64-bit; this is the right choice for most current PCs.
Windows 32-bit scribus-1.6.6-windows.exe 108.0 MB Only when the installed Windows system is 32-bit.
Linux x86_64 scribus-1.6.6-linux-x86_64.AppImage 133.3 MB You want the upstream 1.6.6 binary without waiting for your distribution’s repository.
macOS Intel scribus-1.6.6.dmg 251.4 MB Your Mac has an Intel processor.
macOS Apple Silicon scribus-1.6.6-arm64.dmg 228.8 MB Your Mac has an Apple M-series chip.
Source archive scribus-1.6.6.tar.xz 74.7 MB You are building Scribus yourself or packaging it for a distribution.

These filenames and reported sizes come from the Scribus 1.6.6 file directory. Select the filename manually. On macOS in particular, a generic SourceForge download control has reportedly selected the Apple Silicon file even when an Intel build was wanted.

Is Scribus 1.6.6 really free?

Yes. Scribus has no purchase price or subscription requirement, and it is open-source software distributed under GPL-family licensing. The license permits use in commercial and government work, provided users follow the obligations that apply to the relevant GPL license.

That permission applies to Scribus itself—not automatically to everything used with it. Fonts, templates, stock images, ICC profiles, plugins, and other third-party assets may have separate license terms. Commercial printing, licensed fonts, artwork, color-management services, and professional support can also cost money.

Scribus is intended for desktop publishing rather than general word processing or photo editing. Its useful areas include brochures, newsletters, magazines, books, posters, business cards, print-ready PDFs, and structured multi-page documents.

Is 1.6.6 the stable version?

1.6.6 is the stable 1.6.x release, not the project’s development line. The Scribus team announced 1.6.6 alongside 1.7.3 on April 13, 2026. The two branches serve different purposes:

  • 1.6.6: the maintenance and compatibility release for normal users and production work.
  • 1.7.x: the development line containing newer work that may not have the same stability expectations.
  • SVN snapshots: pre-release builds intended primarily for testing, not for paid, regulated, or print-critical projects.

The 1.7.4 SVN directory explicitly identifies its files as pre-release testing builds and lists unresolved problems such as crashes, table issues, spell-checker memory growth, and file-opening problems. If you need dependable production output, download from /scribus/1.6.6/, not /scribus-devel/ or /scribus-svn/.

Version 1.6.6 is also not the eventual 1.8 major release. It should be viewed as a maintenance release, not an interface overhaul or a major new-feature edition.

Install Scribus 1.6.6 on Windows

1. Check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit

Open Settings > System > About and inspect System type. Download scribus-1.6.6-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit Windows or scribus-1.6.6-windows.exe for 32-bit Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The download directory confirms that both architectures are available. Public third-party listings disagree about the oldest supported Windows release, however: some mention Windows 7 or Windows 8 while other current metadata points to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not treat Windows 7 or 8 support as an official 1.6.6 guarantee unless the current Scribus release information confirms it.

2. Run the installer

  1. Download the matching installer from the project directory.
  2. Run the .exe file.
  3. Follow the setup wizard, accept the license, and choose the installation location.
  4. Launch Scribus from the Start menu.
  5. Open Help > About Scribus and confirm that the installed version is 1.6.6.

Before opening an important production document, export a test PDF. Check the page size, bleed, fonts, images, text flow, and color settings before replacing an older installation or overwriting the original file.

Optional: install with WinGet

Windows administrators can use the version-pinned WinGet command documented for the Scribus.Scribus package:

winget install --id Scribus.Scribus --exact --version 1.6.6

WinGet is an alternative installation route, not a substitute for manually checking the official project file directory. After installation, verify the version in Help > About Scribus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows SmartScreen warnings

Windows Defender SmartScreen can warn about a downloaded installer because of reputation or other security signals. Do not disable SmartScreen simply to install Scribus. First check that the file came from the Scribus project directory, that its filename is correct, and—where applicable—that its SHA-256 value matches a trusted reference. Investigate the warning before deciding whether to continue.

Install Scribus 1.6.6 on macOS

Choose Intel or Apple Silicon

Open Apple menu > About This Mac. An Apple Silicon Mac identifies its chip as an Apple M-series processor; an Intel Mac identifies an Intel processor.

  • Apple Silicon Mac: download scribus-1.6.6-arm64.dmg.

Do not assume that the directory’s general download control has selected the right file. Click the exact filename in the 1.6.6 directory.

Install from the DMG

  1. Open the downloaded DMG.
  2. Drag Scribus to the Applications folder.
  3. Open Scribus from Applications.
  4. Use Help > About Scribus to confirm version 1.6.6.

macOS compatibility and Gatekeeper

Public package listings do not agree on the minimum macOS version. Homebrew lists macOS 11 or newer, while other current listings identify macOS 12 or newer for Intel and macOS 13 or newer for Apple Silicon. A conservative assumption is macOS 12 for Intel and macOS 13 for Apple Silicon, but confirm the requirement on Scribus’s current download information before publishing or deploying it widely. See the listings from Homebrew, ComputerBase, and MacGadget for the differing metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If macOS reports that Scribus is from an unidentified developer or cannot be verified, stop and confirm that the DMG came from the verified Scribus project directory. Apple documents the System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway route, but also warns that overriding these protections can expose the Mac to malware. Do not use that option for an installer from an unknown mirror or a repacked download.

Install Scribus 1.6.6 on Linux

Use the official x86_64 AppImage

The AppImage is the simplest way to get the upstream 1.6.6 build when your distribution’s repositories contain an older version.

  1. Download scribus-1.6.6-linux-x86_64.AppImage from the 1.6.6 directory.
  2. Open a terminal in the download directory.
  3. Make the file executable:
chmod +x scribus-1.6.6-linux-x86_64.AppImage
  1. Launch it:
./scribus-1.6.6-linux-x86_64.AppImage

If the file manager refuses to run it, open its permission controls and enable execution, or use the terminal commands above. Once Scribus opens, confirm the version through Help > About Scribus.

This listed AppImage targets x86_64. The supplied 1.6.6 directory does not list an ARM Linux AppImage, so ARM Linux users should check their distribution packages or build Scribus from source rather than treating the x86_64 file as a universal Linux download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use distribution packages when their version is acceptable

Distribution packages integrate more naturally with the operating system, but they can lag behind upstream Scribus:

What changed in Scribus 1.6.6?

Scribus 1.6.6 is primarily a maintenance and compatibility release. The release information emphasizes bug fixes, import and export corrections, build-system updates, and code cleanup rather than a new interface or a large feature set.

Bug fixes and document handling

  • Fixed a crash caused by umlaut composition in filenames of embedded PDF documents.
  • Fixed image links being lost after using Collect for Output.
  • Fixed StoryText::endOfWord() returning an incorrect result when the cursor was already at the end of a word.
  • Improved image scaling when importing Microsoft Publisher files.
  • Fixed the color wheel failing to move correctly to the selected color.

PDF, import, and export fixes

  • Fixed PDF-export problems where text underline incorrectly depended on a text-frame dash array.
  • Fixed the corresponding text-stroke dependency on a text-frame dash array during PDF export.
  • Fixed build failures with newer Poppler releases, specifically Poppler 26.01.0 through 26.04.0.
  • Performed broad cleanup across import and export plugins and filters, including AI, CDR, CGM, CVG, EMF, FreeHand, IDML, ODG, Apple Pages, PageMaker, Microsoft Publisher, QuarkXPress, SVG, Visio, WMF, WPG, Xara, Xfig, XPS, and other formats.

Python and build-system work

  • Corrected bad escape sequences in Python docstrings.
  • Added MSVC 2026 projects and retargeted them to the Windows 10 SDK.
  • Fixed toolset errors affecting MSVC 2022 and MSVC 2026 projects.
  • Sorted projects in MSVC solutions.

The complete fix list is summarized in the 1.6.6 release notes listing. The practical significance is improved compatibility and fewer failures in specific workflows, not a promise that every document or import will render identically across versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Scribus require Ghostscript?

No—not for every Scribus installation or ordinary layout task. Basic page layout and regular PDF export may work without Ghostscript. EPS, PostScript, print-preview, or particular image and PDF workflows may require it, depending on the operation and platform.

If Scribus reports that Ghostscript is missing, install Ghostscript separately from its legitimate project source and configure Scribus to use it. If Scribus still cannot find it, check the external-tool configuration and the installed executable path rather than repeatedly reinstalling Scribus. Menu labels and paths can vary by Scribus version, so confirm the 1.6.6 interface instead of relying on an older help page. Ghostscript is not treated as a mandatory dependency by the Arch Scribus package, which is another reason not to describe it as universally required.

Is Scribus 1.6.6 safe to download?

The safest download hierarchy is:

  1. The official Scribus downloads page.
  2. The Scribus project’s SourceForge 1.6.6 directory.
  3. Your operating system’s distribution repository, when it provides a suitable version.
  4. A reputable mirror only when the official route is unavailable and the file can be independently checked.

Avoid repacked installers, cracked copies, download managers, and pages that hide the original filename. SourceForge’s directory contains detached .asc signatures for source archives, but the visible listing does not show a corresponding official signature file for every Windows, macOS, and AppImage binary. Do not claim that every binary has been verified by an official detached signature unless the current directory confirms it.

In PowerShell, run:

Get-FileHash .scribus-1.6.6-windows-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256

The result must match exactly, character for character. The hash and file metadata are reported by Fossies; Microsoft documents Get-FileHash. This check is useful only when the reference hash itself comes from a source you trust.

A third-party malware scan can be an additional check, but a clean scan is not proof that a file is safe. Correct provenance, the exact filename, and a trusted checksum or signature are more important than a scan badge on an arbitrary download page.

Should you upgrade from an older Scribus version?

For most users who want the stable 1.6.x branch, 1.6.6 is a reasonable upgrade candidate, particularly if they encounter one of the corrected image-link, PDF-export, Poppler, or import problems. Treat a production document as a test case first, however.

Upgrade checklist

  1. Back up the original .sla files.
  2. Export a reference PDF from the older Scribus version.
  3. Keep a copy of the old installer so you can return to the previous environment.
  4. Collect or otherwise preserve linked images, fonts, ICC profiles, and other assets.
  5. Open a copy of the document in 1.6.6 rather than the original.
  6. Compare text flow, line breaks, font substitutions, image links, page geometry, bleed, transparency, and color output.
  7. Export a new test PDF and compare it with the reference PDF.
  8. Only overwrite the production file after the result has been checked.

The 1.6.6 fix for image links lost after Collect for Output makes asset handling especially relevant, but it does not guarantee that every previously broken link will repair itself. Missing images may still result from moved files, renamed folders, or an incomplete asset collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scribus uses an XML-based, comparatively inspectable and scriptable .sla document format. That does not guarantee perfect backward or cross-version fidelity. Fonts, text-shaping libraries, Poppler, operating systems, and Scribus changes can affect line wrapping and rendering. For interchange with someone using another version, preserve the source document and export a reference PDF.

What Scribus is good for—and where it is not

Scribus is a strong fit when you need:

  • Local, offline desktop publishing without a subscription.
  • Multi-page brochures, newsletters, books, magazines, posters, and business cards.
  • Precise page dimensions, margins, guides, bleed, layers, frames, and master pages.
  • Text and character styles, hyphenation, kerning, typography controls, and linked text flow.
  • CMYK, spot colors, ICC color management, transparency, and prepress-oriented PDF output.
  • PDF forms and interactive PDF features.
  • Import and export filters for common text, vector, image, and publishing formats.
  • Python scripting and automation.
  • An open XML-based document format that can be inspected and scripted.

It is not a general-purpose word processor, photo editor, or browser-based collaborative design service. Its interface has a steeper learning curve than many template-driven tools, and users must actively manage fonts, linked images, color profiles, bleed, and export settings. Imports from proprietary publishing applications may also need manual cleanup, and real-time cloud collaboration is not a built-in workflow.

Scribus alternatives by workflow

  • Vector illustration: choose a vector-illustration application when the main task is drawing logos, icons, or scalable artwork rather than assembling a complete publication.
  • Photo editing: use a raster photo editor when retouching, compositing, or color-correcting images is the central task. Scribus can place images but is not a photo-retouching application.
  • Simple template-based design: a template-driven design service may be easier for quick social graphics, invitations, or basic promotional pieces, especially when browser collaboration matters more than prepress control.
  • Commercial desktop publishing: a commercial publishing package may offer a more polished integrated workflow, broader proprietary-format compatibility, or vendor support, but typically involves a purchase or subscription.
  • Browser collaboration: a cloud design platform is more suitable when several people need simultaneous editing, comments, and centralized online assets.

Choose Scribus when control over page geometry, print preparation, color, local files, and licensing matters more than templates or real-time collaboration.

Troubleshooting Scribus 1.6.6

Problem Likely cause What to do
macOS refuses to launch Scribus The wrong architecture DMG was downloaded. Use scribus-1.6.6.dmg for Intel or scribus-1.6.6-arm64.dmg for Apple Silicon.
Windows installer is rejected SmartScreen reputation warning, damaged download, or an untrusted mirror. Download again from the project directory, check the exact filename and available SHA-256 value, and investigate the warning instead of disabling SmartScreen.
Scribus opens but images are missing Links point to moved assets, or a collection operation left links unresolved. Restore the original asset directory, relink the images, and test the corrected 1.6.6 Collect for Output behavior on a copy.
PDF, EPS, or PostScript feature is unavailable Ghostscript is missing or Scribus cannot locate it. Install Ghostscript from a legitimate source and configure the external tool; verify its path rather than reinstalling Scribus repeatedly.
Linux AppImage does nothing The file does not have execute permission. Run chmod +x scribus-1.6.6-linux-x86_64.AppImage, then launch it from a terminal.
The repository installs an older version Your distribution package has not caught up with upstream 1.6.6. Check the installed version and use the upstream AppImage if you specifically need 1.6.6.
Layout changes after upgrading Different fonts, text libraries, Poppler, operating system, or Scribus version. Compare with a reference PDF, restore the backup, install the required fonts, and test from a copy.
1.7.x was downloaded by mistake The development or SVN directory was used. Remove or set aside the test build and download only from /scribus/1.6.6/.
A file opens in one Scribus version but not another Version or feature compatibility issue. Preserve the original version, work from a backup, and use PDF export for visual interchange.

Bottom line

Scribus 1.6.6 is the stable, no-cost choice for print-oriented desktop publishing on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download the exact architecture-specific file from the Scribus project directory, verify the installed version, and test an important document before upgrading it in place. Use the stable 1.6.6 files for production; reserve 1.7.x and SVN builds for controlled testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Best choice: download Scribus 1.6.6 from the project’s 1.6.6 directory, select the file matching your operating system and CPU architecture, and verify the installation in Help > About Scribus. It is free and suitable for commercial publishing, but fonts, images, color profiles, Ghostscript-dependent workflows, and document compatibility still require careful testing.
