The best choice depends on what you want to sew: Garden Pathways and Nine-Patch Square Dance are sensible starting points for precut-friendly projects; Star Silhouettes, Sew Many Strips, Scrappy Celebration, and Scrap Happy make strong use of a stash; Sea Swept is the foundation-piecing option; Stepping Stones is a small wall hanging; and On the Bright Side, Rolling Prairie, and Scrap Happy are substantial bed-size projects.

All 20 designs below come from AllPeopleQuilt’s March 20, 2025 roundup, “20 of Our Most Popular Patterns.” The list is a pattern-shopping guide rather than a single quilt-along tutorial: each entry has its own designer, construction approach, fabric needs, and finished dimensions. The patterns are offered through APQShop, so check the live listing for current availability, format, price, and complete fabric requirements before buying.

The 20 patterns, with their strongest use case

1. Heart of the Home

Designed by Sherri L. McConnell, Heart of the Home is a 77-1/2-inch square quilt built from Log Cabin blocks containing hearts, stars, and houses. The finished block is 12 inches. It was the 2024 Quilt-Along project, making it a particularly recognizable choice for quilters who enjoy a sampler-like design with a strong traditional theme.

2. Garden Pathways

Jessica Weirich designed Garden Pathways for One Quilt Place. The listed full-size quilt measures 85-1/2 by 94 inches and uses 6-inch finished blocks to create a lattice-like bed-quilt layout. This is the clearest choice in the roundup for someone shopping specifically for precut strips, although the pattern’s own requirements—not the bundle name—should determine what and how much to purchase.

3. To Give & To Receive

Sharon Tucker’s 66-1/2-inch scrappy throw alternates star blocks from a block exchange with 16-Patch blocks. It suits a communal project or a quilter who already has blocks, swap fabric, or a varied collection of scraps. The finished blocks are 6 inches.

4. Star Silhouettes

Star Silhouettes, by Diane Harris, measures 68-1/2 by 88-1/2 inches. Its visual impact depends on contrast, while the 4-inch finished blocks and substantial use of scraps make it a natural project for sorting a stash by value, color, or print scale.

5. Log Cabin Beads

Kathy Hamada’s Log Cabin Beads uses uneven Log Cabin blocks to create offset circles that resemble strands of beads. The listed throw or full-size quilt measures 75-1/2 by 90-1/2 inches. Choose it if you like the recognizable construction of Log Cabin blocks but want a layout with more movement than a conventional straight setting.

6. Sew Many Strips

Sew Many Strips is Tara Lynn Basiden’s Rail Fence quilt, finished at 86-1/2 inches square. The design calls for prints in many hues, so it is well suited to a multicolor fabric collection or a coordinated selection of scraps. It was the 2019 Quilt-Along project.

7. Scrappy Celebration

Lissa Alexander’s Scrappy Celebration combines assorted colors and blocks in a vibrant 63-1/2-by-72-1/2-inch quilt. It is a good candidate when the goal is to use a lively stash rather than achieve a tightly controlled two-color or limited-palette effect. The pattern was the 2023 Quilt-Along project.

8. Stepping Stones

At 34 by 25 inches, Stepping Stones is the only clearly identified wall hanging in the roundup. Mabeth Oxenreider uses light-dark interplay to create a three-dimensional impression. Its unusual construction also avoids separately binding the outside and inside corners: the top is stitched to the backing before quilting. That detail matters when comparing it with a conventional small quilt or table piece.

9. Designer Challenge: Log Cabin Block

This entry is a two-pattern challenge, not one uniform quilt pattern. It includes traditional and modern interpretations by Joanna Figueroa and Alexia Marcelle Abegg. The designs have different finished sizes and block dimensions, so consult the individual pattern information before planning fabric, cutting, or a final layout.

10. Sea Swept

Laura Flynn’s Sea Swept measures 57-1/2 by 66-1/2 inches. Swirling batik colors evoke waves, and the quilt uses foundation piecing. It is therefore the strongest selection for a maker specifically interested in that technique rather than simply looking for a conventional patchwork layout.

11. Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods, by Katie Hennagir, combines Bear’s Paw, Log Cabin, and star blocks in flannel. The finished quilt measures 70-1/2 by 84-1/2 inches, making it a substantial winter quilt. It was a 2023 Quilt-Along project. Flannel is part of the design’s character, so do not assume that an ordinary cotton bundle can be substituted without changing the result.

12. Evening Glow

Sarah J. Maxwell’s 84-1/2-inch square Evening Glow combines star and 16-Patch blocks in sunset-inspired fabrics. The pattern also offers optional tabletopper, throw, and king sizes. It was the 2024 Quilt-Along project. This is one of the more flexible choices if you like the design but need to scale the finished project to a different use.

13. S’mores

Jo Morton’s S’mores is a 57-inch square scrappy quilt built from 4-inch finished blocks. Its palette centers on chocolate brown, marshmallow cream, and assorted prints. The relatively compact finished size makes it a practical choice when you want the visual variety of a scrappy quilt without planning a full bed quilt.

14. On the Bright Side

On the Bright Side, by Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken of Jo’s Country Junction, is a king-size quilt of miniature eight-point stars. The listed finished size is 96-1/2 inches square, and the project was the 2018 Quilt-Along. Its scale and small star units make it a commitment in both sewing time and organization; it is best selected when a large square bed quilt is the actual goal.

15. Pumpkin Picking

Kristina Brinkerhoff’s Pumpkin Picking is a 57-1/2-by-73-1/2-inch seasonal sampler combining pumpkin, star, and leaf blocks. The styling can move toward fall or Halloween, so fabric selection determines much of the finished mood. It is the most directly seasonal choice in the 20-pattern list.

16. Water Colors

Water Colors, by Ledine Watson, measures 60-1/2 by 75-1/2 inches. Bold-colored simple units form blocks that appear to ripple across the quilt. It was the Summer 2023 Quilt-Along project and is a strong option for a maker who wants color and movement without a named seasonal motif.

17. Nine-Patch Square Dance

Sherri McConnell’s Nine-Patch Square Dance is a 59-1/2-by-70-inch throw with 9-inch finished blocks. It is described as both precut-friendly and scrap-friendly, making it one of the most adaptable choices for using what is already on hand. It was the 2021 Quilt-Along project.

18. Sweater Weather

Sweater Weather, by Tina Lewis, is a 69-1/2-by-85-1/2-inch two-color quilt inspired by Norwegian knitted sweaters. Its construction uses triangle-squares, rectangles, and strips. Pick it when a disciplined palette and graphic, textile-inspired appearance appeal more than a multicolor scrap aesthetic.

19. Rolling Prairie

Mabeth Oxenreider’s Rolling Prairie is a skill-building bargello quilt measuring 90-3/8 by 95 inches in the listed full-size version. The strips are arranged to suggest meadow grass moving in the wind. Because bargello construction depends on careful strip organization and sequencing, plan a labeling system before cutting.

20. Scrap Happy

Christa Watson’s Scrap Happy is a rainbow scrap-busting quilt made from 2-1/2-inch squares. The listed finished size is 88-1/2 by 96-1/2 inches, with multiple finished block sizes. It is one of the strongest choices for a large, colorful stash project, but its size means that “scrap-friendly” does not mean fabric-free: sort and measure your available squares before committing.

How to choose the right pattern

Choose by fabric you already own

  • Precut strips: Start with Garden Pathways, Nine-Patch Square Dance, or Sew Many Strips. Rolling Prairie is another strip-oriented direction, but its bargello layout calls for especially careful organization.
  • General scraps: Consider Star Silhouettes, Scrappy Celebration, To Give & To Receive, Scrap Happy, or S’mores.
  • Flannel: Cabin in the Woods is the clearly flannel-centered design.
  • Batik: Sea Swept is designed around swirling batik color.
  • A controlled two-color palette: Look at Sweater Weather.
  • Seasonal fabrics: Choose Pumpkin Picking; Cabin in the Woods, Evening Glow, and S’mores can also support winter, autumn, or cozy seasonal interpretations depending on fabric choices.

Choose by finished size

Do not buy fabric before checking the finished dimensions and the pattern’s cutting plan. Stepping Stones is a 34-by-25-inch wall hanging, while On the Bright Side is a 96-1/2-inch square king-size quilt. Between those extremes are throws, full-size quilts, and bed-size projects. A pattern’s appearance can be appealing while its required quantity, sewing time, and quilting cost are completely wrong for your intended use.

Choose by technique

  • Log Cabin construction: Heart of the Home, Log Cabin Beads, and the Designer Challenge: Log Cabin Block.
  • Foundation piecing: Sea Swept.
  • Bargello strip work: Rolling Prairie.
  • Rail Fence: Sew Many Strips.
  • Small patchwork units: Star Silhouettes, S’mores, and Scrap Happy.

The roundup does not assign difficulty ratings, so do not treat the technique labels as official beginner or advanced classifications. Use them to identify the type of construction you want to learn, then read the individual pattern requirements before purchasing.

Precut fabrics: what to buy and what not to assume

Common precut formats include 2-1/2-inch strips, 5-inch squares, 10-inch squares, fat eighths, and fat quarters. A 2-1/2-inch strip bundle is often marketed as a “jelly roll,” but names and package contents vary by manufacturer and retailer. Verify the actual dimensions and the number of pieces rather than relying on the label.

2-1/2-inch quilting strips are the most natural material purchase connected with this roundup because several designs are strip- or precut-friendly. They can reduce cutting time, but one bundle is not automatically enough for a particular quilt. Compare the pattern’s required strip count, background fabric, borders, binding, and backing with the contents of the package.

Most importantly, do not assume that one fabric bundle supplies an entire featured quilt. The Heart of the Home Quilt-Along materials list, for example, calls for several categories of colored fabric, substantial light fabric, backing, and an 86-inch-square batting piece. Its FAQ specifically notes that no single precut provides everything needed for the quilt as pictured because additional light fabrics are required.

Basic tools for planning and cutting

For ordinary rotary cutting, the essential tools are a rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and cutting mat. A 45mm rotary cutter is identified by the publisher as a useful all-purpose size. Its blade is razor-sharp: keep it guarded or locked whenever it is not in use, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

If you choose Sea Swept or another foundation-paper-pieced design, expect a different tool list: cutting mat, rotary cutter, Add-a-Quarter ruler, freezer paper, iron, and marking tools. These tools support the precision and pressing steps associated with foundation piecing; they are not evidence that every pattern in the roundup requires them.

Before purchasing any of the patterns

  1. Confirm the live listing. The roundup directs readers to APQShop, but availability, price, and digital-download details can change.
  2. Record the exact finished size. Note whether the listed measurement is a throw, full-size, king, wall hanging, or one of several options.
  3. Read the complete fabric requirements. Separate feature fabric, background, borders, binding, backing, and batting.
  4. Audit your stash or precuts. Measure strips and squares; do not count a bundle as sufficient without comparing its contents with the pattern.
  5. Plan for shrinkage and quilting. The dimensions above are finished quilt sizes from the roundup, not guaranteed post-wash measurements or quilting outcomes.
  6. Organize small units. Projects involving 4-inch blocks, miniature stars, 2-1/2-inch squares, or bargello strips benefit from labeled stacks and a written cutting map.

One important date distinction

The canonical list here is the March 20, 2025 roundup of 20 patterns. A separate January 28, 2026 roundup contains additional designs, including Wrapped in Ribbons, Shimmer, Shiny Brights, Swirling Leaves, Swing into Spring, Halloween Hoopla, and Christmas Garland. Those later designs are not part of the 20 entries above and should not be counted as replacements or additions to this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these 20 quilt patterns free?

The roundup is a collection of individual quilt patterns, not one free pattern or one tutorial. The listed patterns are available through APQShop, and readers should check each current listing for price, format, availability, and fabric requirements.

Which of the 20 patterns is best for precut strips?

Garden Pathways is explicitly designed around precut strips. Nine-Patch Square Dance is described as both precut-friendly and scrap-friendly, while Sew Many Strips and Rolling Prairie are also natural choices for strip-based fabric planning. Always compare the pattern requirements with the actual contents of a bundle.

Which patterns are best for using scraps?

Star Silhouettes, Sew Many Strips, Scrappy Celebration, To Give & To Receive, Nine-Patch Square Dance, S’mores, and Scrap Happy all lend themselves to scrap-oriented sewing. Scrap-friendly does not mean that no additional fabric is needed, especially for large quilts or background areas.

What are the smallest and largest quilts in the roundup?

Stepping Stones is the smallest listed project at 34 by 25 inches and is described as a wall hanging. On the Bright Side is the largest listed square quilt at 96-1/2 inches and is intended as a king-size project.

The Bottom Line

For the most practical match, choose Garden Pathways or Nine-Patch Square Dance for precuts, a scrap-focused design such as Star Silhouettes or Scrap Happy for stash sewing, Sea Swept for foundation piecing, or Stepping Stones for a small wall hanging. Confirm the individual APQShop pattern’s live requirements before buying fabric: finished size and background-fabric needs vary too much for one bundle to cover all 20 projects.
