First: identify your exact iPad
Go to Settings > General > About and note the iPad’s model and generation. A family name such as “iPad Air” or “iPad Pro” is not enough to establish stylus compatibility.
- Match the exact model against Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility guide or the stylus maker’s current product listing.
- Check any iPadOS requirement and whether the product listing is for the USB-C or an older Lightning variant.
- Confirm the features you need in both the stylus documentation and your chosen app.
Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro for iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad Air 11- and 13-inch models with M2, M3, or M4, and iPad Pro 11- and 13-inch models with M4 or M5. Apple Pencil USB-C supports a wider range, including iPad mini (6th generation and A17 Pro), iPad (10th generation and A16), selected iPad Air models, and numerous iPad Pro models. Use Apple’s live compatibility table as the final authority.

Best for drawing: Apple Pencil Pro
Choose Apple Pencil Pro if you draw on a supported iPad and want Apple’s richest set of drawing and gesture features among these choices. Apple documents pressure and tilt sensitivity, hover on supported iPads, squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, Find My, and magnetic pairing and charging.

Official Apple option: Apple Pencil USB-C
Apple Pencil USB-C is an official option for handwriting and basic drawing on supported iPads. Apple lists a broader range of compatible models than for Pencil Pro. It charges by USB-C, and Macworld’s comparison says it lacks pressure sensitivity. That makes it a less suitable choice for pressure-driven illustration than Pencil Pro.

Crayon is not pressure-sensitive, according to independent comparison coverage. Tilt can change stroke behavior, but it is not the same as pressure response. - Palm rejection supports a more natural handwriting posture.
