Bicycle parts can become geometry, lighting, furniture, fences, displays, and monumental art. Make:’s 2016 gallery, “20 Sculptures That Upcycle Your ‘Cycle,” brings together examples ranging from abstract arrangements of wheels to recognizable bicycles transformed into objects or installations. It is an inspiration gallery—not a build guide or a safety assessment.
From bicycle parts to sculptural forms
The examples in Jeremy S. Cook’s Make: roundup move between two visual approaches: keeping parts recognizable and rearranging them until they read as new shapes. The article groups examples under themes rather than numbering 20 individual works, so the descriptions below follow those themes rather than assigning unsupported names or details to every piece. Read the Make: roundup.
Wheels become geometry
One example is a geodesic-dome-like structure assembled from bicycle wheels, including an opening that appears to have no spokes. Another arranges many wheels into a torus, or doughnut-like form. In both, the circular wheel remains legible while repetition creates a larger geometric shape. Make: attributes the dome-like example to Inspiration Green and links the torus example to World Nomads.
Drivetrains become lighting and small figures
Drivetrain components supply the visual language for several smaller works. A fixture appears to use bicycle drivetrain parts, while rear cassettes are used to hold bare bulbs. The roundup also includes a small snowman form made from a gear train. These are examples of parts repurposed as visual elements; the article does not provide electrical specifications or construction instructions.

When the bicycle stays recognizable
Fences made from bikes and frames
Some examples arrange worn, whole bicycles or frames as fencing; another gives the fence a white picket-fence treatment. The bicycle remains identifiable, but its role shifts from transportation to boundary or decoration. Make: jokes that another way of keeping pets contained may still be needed. These images are not evidence that the structures work as secure barriers or meet safety requirements.
Wall displays and wheel arrangements
A bicycle shop in Altlandsburg, Germany, displays complete bicycles on a wall. The roundup does not establish whether those bikes were for sale. A separate wall-art example uses a cluster of wheels, making the repeated circles the main visual feature rather than presenting a complete bicycle.

Furniture from forks, seats, and frames
Several pieces turn bicycle components into seating: stools made from bike parts, including one with a front suspension fork and a cushion; examples using fixed forks or an exercise-bike seat with other components; and a bench made from bicycle seats. Make: treats comfort humorously, not as a tested property. The gallery gives no dimensions, load ratings, construction details, or evidence that these objects are suitable for regular use.
Monumental and altered bicycles
Large assemblies and a bicycle pyramid
Make: reports that a sculpture shown through Bike Rumor uses 1,200 bicycles. That is an example-specific figure reported by the 2016 roundup via Bike Rumor, not a general measure of bicycle-art installations. The article also points to a smaller bicycle pyramid.

An oversized bicycle and a bent form
One oversized bicycle sculpture is described as apparently not made from actual bicycle parts, a reminder that bicycle imagery can be reproduced at a scale and in a material unrelated to the object itself. The roundup also names Alicja Kwade’s bent-bicycle sculpture, Journey without arrival, but supplies little further context about the work.
How to look at the gallery
The examples can be read along four useful axes: what material is used, what the object does, how large it is, and how recognizable the bicycle remains. Those distinctions help explain the range of ideas without implying that one work is more durable, safer, better made, or more environmentally beneficial than another.

Cook’s gallery, published April 19, 2016 (the page also displays April 18), is useful as a visual source of ideas for reimagining unwanted bicycle parts. It is not a how-to resource: it provides no dimensions, material specifications, build methods, structural testing, conservation information, or complete provenance for most examples. The linked works may have changed location or condition since publication; the gallery alone does not establish their present status.
