The 14 manicure ideas forecast for 2024 were chrome, textured designs, hazy blue, electric blue, red, squoval nails, bows, mismatched nails, peach, stars, animal prints, pierced nails, short square nails, and aura nails. The list came from a December 27, 2023 PEOPLE trend report featuring celebrity nail artist Michelle Saunders and Los Angeles-based nail artist Analysse Hernandez. It was a forecast—not a measured ranking of salon bookings, searches, or consumer adoption—so “everywhere” should be read as editorial shorthand.

This guide preserves the original 14 predictions while making them more useful: each look is explained by color, shape, finish, technique, difficulty, season, maintenance, and suitability for short or natural nails. It also separates the ideas that received repeated 2024 editorial coverage from more niche predictions such as pierced nails.

2024 Nail Trends: 14 Manicure Ideas Predicted to Be Everywhere

The original forecast mixed several different kinds of manicure ideas. Chrome is a finish, hazy blue is a color, squoval is a shape, bows are a motif, and aura nails are a gradient effect. They are not 14 equivalent categories, and they can be combined: for example, short-square nails with cherry-cola polish and one chrome accent, or squoval nails with a peach aura.

Use the list below as inspiration rather than a promise that every look became mainstream. Later 2024 coverage from Allure, Allure’s spring report, Vogue, Allure’s fall report, and Glamour’s square-nail feature repeatedly revisited several of these directions. That is useful corroboration, but it is still qualitative editorial coverage—not statistical proof of what was most popular everywhere.

Colors and finishes

1. Chrome nails

Chrome was expected to move beyond the silver-heavy manicures associated with 2023. The more wearable 2024 interpretation was a soft chromed glaze or pastel chrome rather than an aggressively mirror-metallic set. Chrome can be applied over a full color, concentrated at the tip as a chrome French manicure, or limited to one or two accent nails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to request: “I’d like a sheer pastel base with a soft chrome glaze,” or “Can we do chrome French tips instead of a full chrome set?” A pastel base makes the finish less stark, while a single metallic accent reduces both cost and commitment. Chrome powder is usually easiest for a professional using a compatible gel system; metallic polish or chrome-effect press-ons are simpler home alternatives.

Best pairing: short-square nails with pale pink chrome, squoval nails with champagne chrome, or electric-blue nails with a silver accent. Chrome, aura, and metallic effects were also prominent in Vogue’s 2024 forecast and Allure’s spring coverage.

2. Hazy blue

Hazy blue is a light blue softened with gray—think dusty blue, gray-blue, or a muted icy blue rather than a bright primary blue. The original prediction positioned it particularly well for winter, with optional silver shimmer.

This is a color choice, not a special technique, so it works with regular polish, gel polish, or press-ons. Ask for “a muted blue with a gray undertone” if a salon’s shade names are different. A glossy topcoat keeps the color clean and modern; fine silver shimmer or a thin silver French tip adds a frosty effect without turning the manicure into full nail art. The reviewed sources preserve hazy blue as an original prediction, but provide less independent evidence that it became a major mainstream trend than they do for chrome, aura, or textured nails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Electric blue

Electric blue is the saturated, high-energy counterpart to hazy blue. The original article described it as a year-round color and mentioned The Gel Bottle’s Electric Blue as an example. Because that product reference dates from 2023, check current shade names, stock, and regional availability rather than assuming the same product is still sold.

A full electric-blue set is bold but uncomplicated. For a conservative workplace or a first experiment with bright polish, choose electric-blue French tips, one accent nail, or a sheer blue base with a stronger blue tip. On short nails, a solid saturated color can look especially crisp because the manicure does not rely on length or extensions for impact.

4. Shades of red

Red was forecast to remain a reliable manicure choice, from bright cherry red to deeper blue-red, burgundy, and brown-red. The original report singled out “cherry cola,” a dark, vampy red suited to winter.

Red is one of the easiest ways to participate in a trend without adding nail art. Choose bright cherry red for a classic statement, blue-red for a cooler and cleaner effect, or cherry cola for a moodier fall and winter manicure. It works on short square, squoval, almond, and long enhanced nails, and it can usually be done with regular polish, gel, or press-ons. Later 2024 coverage continued to feature deep reds, which gives this prediction stronger staying power than a one-season color mention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Peach

Peach was connected to Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz, officially announced in December 2023. That designation verifies the color-year association; it does not prove that peach dominated nail appointments nationwide.

The most wearable version is a glossy peach sheen or a sheer peach wash. Other options include peach chrome, peach French tips, peach-orange mismatched nails, or a peach base with a soft aura center. Ask for “a warm, milky peach” if you want something delicate, or “peach-orange” for a brighter summer manicure. Peach is forgiving on short nails and works particularly well with a squoval shape and a high-shine finish.

Shapes and lengths

6. Squoval nails

Squoval means square nails with softened corners. It is not quite the flat, sharply cornered square shape and not quite an oval. The original forecast suggested that squoval nails could gain attention after several seasons of almond shapes.

Ask your technician to keep the sidewalls relatively straight, create a square tip, and soften the corners enough that they do not feel sharp. Squoval works with nearly any color: sheer pink for minimalism, red for a classic look, chrome for shine, or mismatched colors for something more playful. It is a shape rather than a length, so it can be adapted to natural short nails or enhancements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Short and square nails

Short-and-square describes both the length and the shape: the free edge is kept short and the tip is relatively flat. The forecast linked the look to 1990s minimalism, often with sheer pinks such as Chanel Ballerina or Essie Mademoiselle. Those product names are historical examples from the original article, not a guarantee of current availability.

This is the most practical option in the list for people who type frequently, work with their hands, dislike extensions, or want less upkeep. Try sheer pink, glossy red, hazy blue, peach, or one tiny star per hand. Later 2024 coverage, including Glamour’s feature on square nails, gave additional attention to square shapes at short and medium lengths.

Do not confuse the two shapes: a short square nail is deliberately short and flat-tipped; a squoval can be longer or shorter, with corners softened into a less geometric outline.

Decorative motifs

8. Bows

Bow nail art was associated with the coquette aesthetic. The design can be as simple as a tiny painted outline or as elaborate as a raised bow charm surrounded by pearls or rhinestones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose one of three commitment levels:

  • Lowest commitment: a tiny painted bow on one or two accent nails.
  • Moderate: bow stickers, decals, or transfers over a sheer pink or red base.
  • Highest: raised 3D bows, metallic charms, pearls, or rhinestones.

When booking, specify whether you want painted art or a physical charm; they require different products and amounts of time. A small bow is less likely to snag on hair, knitwear, or clothing than a large raised embellishment. Bows and 3D embellishments also appeared in Allure’s spring 2024 trend coverage.

9. Stars

Stars can turn a plain manicure into celestial nail art without requiring a full set of complex illustrations. Use tiny white or metallic stars over navy, black, sheer pink, red, or hazy blue, or make one large star the focus of an accent nail.

Hand-drawn stars can be time-consuming and require a steady brush. For a beginner-friendly version, use star decals, a stamping plate, a dotting tool, or press-ons. A simple approach is to apply the base, let regular polish dry fully, place one or two stars on an accent nail, and seal with topcoat. Allure’s star examples include dotting-tool and press-on approaches that are more predictable than attempting a complete freehand set.

10. Animal prints

The forecast included leopard, tortoiseshell, and cow print as flexible motifs that can read either classic or dramatic. You do not need a full animal-print manicure: use one accent nail, a printed French tip, or a few irregular spots over a neutral base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For cow print, start with a milky white base and add irregular brown spots with the polish brush. Use the narrow side of the brush for smaller specks, allow the design to dry, and apply topcoat. For tortoiseshell, layer translucent brown, amber, and orange jelly-like shades so the colors remain dimensional rather than flat. Leopard print can be simplified to brown or black irregular dots with partial outlines.

Full animal-print sets are more dependent on neat placement and color balance than solid polish. Faux crocodile, tortoiseshell, and animal-inspired French tips also appeared in Allure’s spring and fall 2024 coverage.

11. Pierced nails

Pierced nails use a charm or ring attached through a hole in the nail plate. They are the most safety-sensitive idea in the original list and should not be treated as a casual DIY project.

Do not drill through a natural nail at home. If you want the look, ask an experienced nail professional whether it is appropriate for your nail and how the tool is cleaned and disinfected. Skip the service if the nail is thin, split, painful, infected, or already damaged. Also avoid any manicure service over cuts, open wounds, sores, blisters, or visibly infected skin. OSHA’s nail-salon guidance discusses biological hazards, tool disinfection, and precautions around blood or infected skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safer visual substitute is a painted silver hoop, a small charm attached to the surface of an enhancement, or a piercing-style decal. These alternatives provide the edgy effect without creating a hole in the nail plate.

Styling concepts and effects

12. Mismatched nails

Mismatched nails replace the single uniform manicure with a coordinated collection of colors or designs. The easiest version is a five-color “skittle” manicure, in which every nail is a different solid shade. A more elaborate set might combine chrome, stars, animal print, and a French tip.

To keep the result intentional, repeat at least one unifying element: the same color family, finish, motif, or base color. For example, pair peach, hazy blue, and cream with the same glossy finish, or use red, burgundy, and cherry cola across different designs. Mismatched solid colors are one of the more DIY-friendly predictions because they require planning but not intricate brushwork.

  • USAGE:Great for creating complex work likes delicate painting and stereoscopic patterns. The brush set can be used for delicate art painting, face painting, model painting, rock painting, etc

13. Aura nails

Aura nails use a blurred concentration of color surrounded by one or more softer shades. The color may sit in the center of the nail like a glowing orb, or it may blend from the cuticle toward the tip. The effect is softer than a hard-edged gradient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At a salon, aura nails may be created with an airbrush, pigment powders, or gel products. At home, a makeup wedge can be used to dab colors onto the nail. Another product-dependent method uses blooming gel: apply the base color, add blooming gel, place a small dab of gel color, cure, and repeat with additional colors before topcoat. Follow the product and lamp manufacturer’s curing directions; do not substitute generic timings for a specific gel system. Allure’s aura tutorial describes sponge, pigment, airbrush, and blooming-gel approaches.

For a low-risk first attempt, use two colors rather than five: peach with pink, hazy blue with silver, or red with burgundy. Aura gradients look visible on short nails, although a little extra length gives the blurred center more room to spread.

14. Textured designs

Texture can mean subtly raised lines, pearl details, bubbles, ripples, a 3D French manicure, or fully sculpted gel. The original prediction suggested adding texture to French tips, mismatched sets, or bubble designs, using 3D gel or sculpting gel.

Ask for the specific effect rather than simply saying “textured”: “thin raised lines,” “bubble texture,” “a 3D French tip,” or “small pearl accents.” One or two textured accent nails are more practical than a raised design on every finger. Large elements can catch on hair, knitwear, bags, and clothing, and may make typing or manual work less comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Three-dimensional gel is product-specific. For example, The Gel Bottle’s 3D Studio Gel guide gives 30-second curing guidance for thin layers and 60 seconds for thicker layers in that system. Those times should not be generalized to every gel, lamp, layer thickness, or brand. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the product is fully cured.

How to choose the right 2024 trend

If you want one color and minimal upkeep

Choose red, peach, hazy blue, or electric blue. These looks require no intricate art and can be performed with regular polish, gel polish, or press-ons. For the most understated version, select sheer peach or pink with a glossy topcoat.

If you want a minimalist manicure

Choose short-and-square or squoval nails with sheer pink, a muted blue, or a subtle chrome glaze. Short natural nails do not need extensions to look finished. A soft-square shape also gives a clean outline without the sharper corners of a strict square.

If you want nail art without a full salon commitment

Try one star, one bow, an animal-print accent nail, mismatched solid colors, or chrome French tips. Decals and press-ons can replace hand-painted details, while an accent nail keeps the appointment shorter and the design easier to maintain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a dramatic salon set

Ask for aura gradients, full chrome, layered tortoiseshell, sculpted texture, or a combination of 3D bows and charms. Bring a reference image and specify your preferred length, shape, base color, finish, and which elements should be limited to accent nails.

If you type, work with your hands, or dislike extensions

Start with short square or squoval nails. Use solid red, peach, electric blue, or hazy blue, or add tiny stars and micro-bows. Avoid large charms and extensive raised texture if snagging or clearance is a concern.

If your nails are weak, peeling, painful, or damaged

Do not use pierced nails or enhancement-heavy designs to cover a nail problem. Consider postponing gel or extensions and ask a dermatologist about persistent changes. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that repeated gel manicures can contribute to brittleness, peeling, and cracking.

Which predictions had the most staying power?

Based on the editorial coverage reviewed—not on booking or sales data—the strongest corroboration during 2024 was for chrome, aura effects, 3D and textured art, bows, animal-inspired designs, short-square nails, and deep reds. These looks appeared across multiple seasonal or annual trend reports.

Blue shades, peach, jelly-like finishes, mismatched sets, and stars had more partial, seasonal, or style-specific support. They remain valid manicure ideas, but the available sources do not establish that they became dominant trends.

Pierced nails were the most niche prediction in the reviewed coverage. They may suit an edgy style, but they should not be presented as a mainstream, universally practical, or DIY-safe manicure. The original article’s suggestion that some textured and pierced designs would not take much time should also be treated cautiously: appointment length depends on nail preparation, extensions, art complexity, product system, and technician experience.

DIY, gel, or salon: what each look realistically needs

Approach Good choices Be cautious with
Regular polish Solid red, peach, blue, mismatched colors, short square, simple stars, simple bows, basic animal-print accents Raised texture, chrome powder, blooming-gel aura effects
Gel or salon products Chrome, aura gradients, French tips, durable decals, moderate texture Uncured product touching skin; incorrect curing
Press-ons or decals Stars, bows, animal prints, chrome effects, mismatched designs Poor fit, lifting, or removing adhesive by force
Professional salon Intricate hand-painted art, layered tortoiseshell, extensive 3D work, large charms Piercing over damaged nails or service over open wounds

How to describe your choice to a nail technician

A useful request includes five details: shape, length, base color, finish, and art placement. For example:

  • Minimal: “Short natural squoval nails with a sheer milky peach polish and a glossy topcoat.”
  • Chrome: “Short square nails with a sheer pink base and a subtle pearl chrome glaze, not a full mirror finish.”
  • Blue: “Medium squoval nails in muted gray-blue, with a fine silver shimmer on two accent nails.”
  • Art: “Short red nails with one tiny painted bow and one cow-print accent nail.”
  • Aura: “A peach-and-pink aura centered on each nail, using a soft blurred gradient rather than a hard circle.”
  • Texture: “A glossy neutral set with thin raised 3D lines on two nails only; please keep the texture low-profile.”

Before booking a complex set, ask whether the salon offers the required technique, whether the design needs gel or extensions, how long the appointment is expected to take, and whether charms or art carry an additional charge. Product names and shade availability mentioned in the original December 2023 forecast may have changed by 2026.

Nail health, removal, and salon safety

Gel removal

Do not pick or peel gel polish from the nail. The AAD recommends soaking only the fingertips in acetone or using acetone-soaked cotton wrapped around the nails; it notes that gel may come off after about 15 minutes, although the exact time varies by product and application. Moisturize the nails and cuticles afterward, and consider a one- to two-week polish break between gel manicures.

Uncured gel and acrylate sensitivity

The FDA explains that reactive methacrylate monomers can cause redness, swelling, and pain in people who become sensitized. Keep uncured gel off the skin, use products as directed, and stop using a product if a reaction develops. “Gel,” “acrylic,” “3D,” or “hypoallergenic” does not automatically mean a product is safe for every person.

UV exposure

For gel curing, the AAD recommends protecting the hands with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher or using opaque, fingertip-less gloves. Moderation, careful removal, and breaks are sensible if your nails become brittle, peel, or crack.

Cuticles and sanitation

Ask how reusable tools are cleaned and disinfected. Avoid aggressive cuticle cutting or pushing, which can contribute to inflammation and infection. Do not receive a manicure over cuts, open wounds, sores, blisters, or visibly infected skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop

Stop the service and seek medical advice for persistent pain, swelling, redness, pus, marked lifting, or a nail-color change that does not resolve. A dermatologist can evaluate ongoing nail damage or a suspected product allergy.

Bottom line

The most adaptable predictions were the ones that can be scaled to the wearer: red, peach, hazy or electric blue, short square or squoval shapes, a chrome accent, mismatched solid colors, tiny stars, and one small bow. Choose aura, layered animal print, chrome powder, or 3D texture when you want a more technical salon look. Treat pierced nails as an optional professional embellishment—not a home tutorial—and judge the original “everywhere” claim as a 2024 forecast supported unevenly by later editorial coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What were the 14 nail trends predicted for 2024?

The list was chrome nails, textured designs, hazy blue, electric blue, shades of red, squoval nails, bows, mismatched nails, peach, stars, animal prints, pierced nails, short-and-square nails, and aura nails.

Which 2024 nail trends are easiest to do at home?

Solid red, peach, hazy blue, electric blue, mismatched solid colors, short square nails, simple stars, simple bows, and basic animal-print accents are the most accessible. Decals, stamping plates, press-ons, and accent nails are easier than full hand-painted or sculpted sets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are pierced nails safe to do at home?

No. Do not drill through a natural nail at home. If you want the look, ask an experienced nail professional whether it is appropriate for your nail and how tools are cleaned and disinfected. A painted hoop, surface charm, or decal is a safer substitute.

What is the difference between squoval and short square nails?

Squoval describes square nails with softened corners and can be worn at different lengths. Short square describes both a short length and a relatively flat, square tip. They are related but not interchangeable terms.

Can these trends be done without gel?

Many can. Regular polish works well for solid colors, mismatched nails, simple stars, simple bows, short square shapes, and basic animal-print accents. Chrome powder, blooming-gel aura effects, raised texture, and larger charms are generally easier with compatible salon gel products.

The Bottom Line

Best all-around choices: short square or squoval nails in red, peach, hazy blue, or electric blue. Add a chrome accent, tiny star, bow, or animal-print nail if you want art without committing to a full sculpted set. Save extensive 3D work for an experienced technician, and never treat pierced nails as a DIY project.
