The 2025 Chinese Lunar New Year fell on January 29, the first day of the first lunar month and the start of the Yi-si Year of the Snake. The Hong Kong Observatory’s Gregorian–Lunar Calendar Conversion Table maps the full year’s Gregorian dates to Chinese lunar dates.
When did the 2025 Lunar New Year begin?
It began on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) marks that date as the first day of the first lunar month in its 2025 Gregorian–Lunar Calendar Conversion Table. The Congressional Research Service’s fact sheet likewise says, “The Year of the Snake will begin on January 29, 2025” (Lunar New Year: Fact Sheet).
For a precise date conversion, use the HKO table: it pairs Gregorian dates with Chinese lunar dates and identifies the first day of each lunar month and the solar terms. DATA.GOV.HK describes the HKO-provided conversion dataset as yearly-updated Chinese-language data; its 2025 record was published November 7, 2024 (dataset record).
2025 Gregorian dates and Chinese lunar-calendar references
The official HKO PDF is the date-by-date reference for 2025. It is a conversion table, not a general schedule of public holidays.

| Question | 2025 answer | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| When was Lunar New Year? | January 29, the first day of the first lunar month | HKO 2025 conversion table |
| Which Chinese zodiac year? | Yi-si, Year of the Snake | HKO 2025 conversion table |
| How long was the lunar year? | 384 days, including a leap month, according to the Shanghai Municipal Government’s January 10, 2025 explainer | Shanghai Municipal Government |
Why the lunar year does not match the Gregorian year
The Chinese calendar combines lunar and solar cycles, so its months and year boundaries do not align exactly with Gregorian calendar months or January 1. The Shanghai Municipal Government explains that the 2025 Year of the Snake included a leap month and totaled 384 days. That figure describes the lunar year, not Gregorian 2025, which remained a 365-day Gregorian calendar year.
The HKO conversion table is useful when you need to translate a specific Gregorian date into the Chinese lunar calendar. It is not a universal calendar for every community that observes Lunar New Year; calendars and observances vary by tradition.

How the public holiday differed from the lunar date
In mainland China, the 2025 Spring Festival public holiday ran from January 28 through February 4, with Lunar New Year’s Eve on January 28. Those dates describe China’s public holiday schedule, not the date conversion itself and not holiday arrangements everywhere (China’s public holidays for 2025).

Does this calendar cover every Lunar New Year tradition?
No. HKO’s table is a Chinese Gregorian-to-lunar conversion reference. “Lunar New Year” also refers to celebrations in other cultures, and their calendars, customs, and zodiac systems can differ. The Congressional Research Service fact sheet discusses Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese observances and notes that Vietnamese zodiac animals differ from those of the Chinese zodiac (Lunar New Year: Fact Sheet). Use the HKO table for Chinese lunar date conversion rather than assuming it defines the date conventions or practices of all communities.
