Make a colorful pom-pom character, a puppet you can bring to life, or a felt headband inspired by the Muppets. These are fan-inspired ideas: use familiar colors and shapes as a starting point, then give each creation your own expression and details.
Choose a craft that fits your materials

The projects are adaptations, not all official Muppet activities. Disney Family’s The Muppets: Pom-Poms provides the directly themed Kermit and Miss Piggy pom-pom project; the puppet and headband ideas below draw on general construction guidance.

1. Make a yarn pom-pom character
Disney Family’s project turns yarn pom-poms into Kermit and Miss Piggy. Its page, dated March 15, 2020, lists a paper template, pencil, scissors, pom-pom makers, yarn, felt, craft foam, cardstock, a tape runner and hot glue.
How to make it
- Trace the template shapes onto the chosen materials and cut them out. An adult should do the cutting.
- Assemble the character’s face details from felt, craft foam and cardstock. For your own version, focus on distinctive colors and a simple expression rather than copying every detail.
- Use the pom-pom maker and yarn to make the body.
- Add Miss Piggy-inspired hair if you are making that version, then attach the face to the pom-pom. Use hot glue only with an adult handling it; tape or an appropriate craft glue may suit some pieces.
Disney’s safety instruction is explicit: “All cutting and hot gluing should be done by an adult.” Read the full Disney Family instructions for its template and project sequence.

2. Turn a sock or paper bag into a puppet
A sock or paper bag gives you a ready-made puppet base. DIY.org’s Build a puppet activity suggests finding where the mouth will open, then adding a felt mouth, fabric-strip hair, pipe-cleaner arms, eyes and marker details.
Build and decorate
- Put a hand in the sock, or fold the paper bag so you can see where its mouth will move. Mark that position before attaching decorations.
- Cut and attach a felt mouth. Add hair from fabric strips and arms from pipe cleaners if you like.
- Finish the face with washable-marker details. Felt circles or drawn eyes can replace buttons when small loose parts are unsuitable.
The activity lists craft glue, scissors, washable markers and tape among its supplies, and specifies adult supervision. For younger children, have an adult prepare cut pieces and keep small loose decorations out of reach. See DIY.org’s puppet activity for its materials and suggested construction.

If you prefer a fabric puppet
DIY.org’s separate Make a fabric puppet guide uses felt body pieces and suggests sewing or fabric glue. It also describes using a clean old sock or T-shirt as a felt alternative. An adult can prepare the needle and thread or glue and cut matching puppet shapes.
3. Make a felt headband or costume detail
For a wearable craft that does not require making a full costume, adapt the headband details in Primary’s Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy costume tutorial. Its Kermit-inspired ideas include a collar and eye headband; the Miss Piggy-inspired accessory is an ear headband.

Make it your own
- Start with a plain headband and felt. Sketch a simple eye, ear or other recognizable shape before cutting.
- Cut the shapes from felt and attach them to the headband with fabric tape or glue appropriate for the materials. The tutorial also lists a foam ball, scissors and hot glue.
- For Kermit-inspired details, add a felt collar or eye shapes; for a Miss Piggy-inspired version, make ears. Change the colors, shapes or expression to create your own character.
Follow the tutorial for its costume-specific construction details, but treat this simplified headband as a fan-inspired craft rather than an official Disney project.

You do not need every item listed for every project. Pick supplies to match the craft you choose, and substitute a suitable tape or craft glue for hot glue when the pieces allow it.
