For a Fourth of July meal, choose a compact topper for a small table, a long runner for a dining table, or a handwork design you can take anywhere. AllPeopleQuilt’s 2026 roundup includes 21 patriotic patterns built around red, white and blue fabrics, with stars and stripes joined by pinwheels, flying geese, hexagons, prairie points, sparklers and Americana motifs.
Choose a pattern by the project you want
| Use case | Look for | Patterns in the roundup |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, graphic holiday runner | Strip piecing, rail-fence units or straightforward star and stripe blocks | Patriotic Mix Table Runner; Front Runner; Strip of Stars; Stars & Stripes |
| Traditional star centerpiece | Pieced stars, spinning stars or radiating points | Vintage Stars Table Runner; Yankee Doodle Table Topper; Blazing Stars Table Runner; Patriotic Spinner Table Runner; Star Spangled Banner |
| Directional movement | Pinwheels or flying-geese units | Patriotic Pinwheels Table Runner; Patriotic Flying Geese Table Runner; Town Square Picnic |
| Handwork-focused project | English paper piecing, hexagons or appliqué | Patriotic Paper Pieces; Patriotic Hexagons Table Runner; Americana Rose; Olde Glory |
| Decorative dimensional detail | Prairie points, fireworks or sparkler-inspired shapes | Patriotic Prairie Points; Patriotic Sparkler; Oh, Glory! |
| Flexible Americana palette | Mixed red, white and blue prints rather than one repeated block | Red, White, and Blue Table Runner; Twinkle, Twinkle; Patriotic Mix Table Runner |
The groupings describe the techniques or visual cues named by the designs; confirm the individual pattern’s cutting instructions before buying fabric. The roundup identifies which entries are free and which are paid, so access terms should be checked on the AllPeopleQuilt listing.

The 21 patterns
Stars, stripes and classic patriotic blocks
- Vintage Stars Table Runner
- Yankee Doodle Table Topper
- Patriotic Spinner Table Runner
- Patriotic Mix Table Runner
- Blazing Stars Table Runner
- Front Runner
- Star Spangled Banner
- Olde Glory
- Red, White, and Blue Table Runner
- Twinkle, Twinkle
- Strip of Stars
- Stars & Stripes
These are the most direct choices when you want the flag’s palette and star imagery to read immediately across the table. AllPeopleQuilt describes one of its star designs this way: “The stars align in a patriotic table runner that proudly displays the red, white, and blue colors of the American flag.”
Geometric movement: geese, pinwheels and town-square blocks
- Patriotic Flying Geese Table Runner
- Patriotic Pinwheels Table Runner
- Town Square Picnic
Flying-geese units create a strong directional line, while pinwheels give a rotating effect. These formats can make a runner feel dynamic without requiring appliqué.
#1 Best Overall
Handwork and appliqué
- Patriotic Paper Pieces
- Patriotic Hexagons Table Runner
- Americana Rose
- Olde Glory
AllPeopleQuilt specifically presents its paper-pieced option as a star-studded Fourth of July topper. English paper piecing and hexagons suit portable handwork; appliqué-based Americana designs add a pictorial focal point. Follow each pattern’s method and template requirements rather than assuming that similarly named designs use the same construction.
Dimensional and fireworks-inspired details
- Oh, Glory!
- Patriotic Sparkler
- Patriotic Prairie Points
Prairie points add folded fabric dimension, while sparkler and fireworks references suggest a celebratory surface design. Check seam, pressing and attachment instructions carefully because dimensional elements can affect how the finished piece lies on a table.

Sizes and supply planning
Only some designs in the available pattern information publish finished dimensions. Kimberbell’s free patriotic runner instructions specify a finished size of 13 x 60 inches and call for red, white and blue fabric (Kimberbell, 2023). AllPeopleQuilt’s Patriotic Hexagons pattern specifies 40 assorted 5-inch squares in blue, red and white and a finished size of 21 3/4 x 35 3/4 inches (AllPeopleQuilt, 2013).
For another square-based option, Amy Latta Creations lists 30 5-inch squares—10 red, 10 white and 10 blue—plus 1/4 yard of red binding and Poly-Fil Low Loft batting for its Freedom Table Runner (2024). That materials list is a useful planning reference, but it is not a substitute for the cutting list of any of the 21 roundup patterns.
Build a reusable fabric selection
- Start with coordinated red, white and blue quilting cottons in several values and scales.
- A fat-quarter or charm-pack bundle can support multiple designs, but compare each pattern’s required cuts first.
- Keep a neutral white or cream print for star points, sashing or background areas.
- Buy batting and binding only after confirming the pattern’s finished size and finishing method.
Because the patterns use different unit sizes and techniques, a bundle that works for one runner may not yield the exact pieces needed for another. The safest approach is to print the chosen cutting list and sort fabric by color before cutting.
How to narrow the list
- Measure the table. Decide whether you need a short topper or a runner with overhang. Do not assume a pattern’s name indicates its finished dimensions.
- Choose your construction. Select strip or block piecing for a machine-pieced project, or choose paper pieces, hexagons, prairie points or appliqué when the technique is the main attraction.
- Check the materials. Match the cutting list to scraps, 5-inch squares, charm packs, fat quarters or yardage you already own.
- Confirm access. AllPeopleQuilt marks free and paid patterns in the roundup; verify the current download or purchase requirement for the specific design.
- Plan the finish. Confirm whether batting, binding, templates or specialty papers are listed before beginning.
What the roundup does—and does not—tell you
The 21 designs cover a broad range of patriotic quilting approaches, but the available listings do not establish a comparable difficulty rating, completion time, cost, or durability for every pattern. Treat those factors as project-specific. Read the individual instructions for technique prerequisites, fabric quantities, seam allowances and finishing details.

Pick from the 21-pattern roundup by matching the table’s size and your preferred technique: stars and stripes for a classic statement, flying geese or pinwheels for motion, or paper pieces, hexagons, prairie points and appliqué for hands-on detail. Use the published 13 x 60-inch and 21 3/4 x 35 3/4-inch examples only as stated references, then rely on the selected pattern’s own cutting list.
