Yes—you can print a Valentine card at home for a romantic partner, spouse, friend, family member, child, teacher, mentor, or coworker without buying a boxed set. The 23 picks below include direct PDF downloads, editable online cards, coloring cards, branded classroom handouts, and small exchange cards, so you can choose the right format instead of treating every printable as a full-size folded greeting card.

Need the fastest choice? Use LoveToKnow for a ready-to-print adult card, McGraw Hill for coloring or classroom cards, In The Playroom for a teacher, SignUp for a coworker, Greetings Island for editable text, or Canva for a photo card. Print one test copy before making multiples, and check the usage terms if the cards are for a school, workplace, business, or sale.

Choose the right kind of Valentine first

Before downloading, decide whether you need a traditional card for an envelope or a small handout for a classroom exchange. The cards in this roundup are not interchangeable.

1. With You in My Life

Best for: A romantic partner. Format: One-page quarter-fold PDF.

This sunrise-style design has a heartfelt message and works when you want something affectionate but not overly elaborate. Download the original With You in My Life card. Print the page and fold it into quarters as indicated by the layout; the panels are intentionally oriented for folding, so do not rotate the page just because some text appears upside down before folding.

Paper tip: Cardstock is preferable. Make a test copy and fold it before printing several cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. I Love You More Today

Best for: A spouse or long-term partner. Format: One-page quarter-fold PDF.

I Love You More Today uses a simple relationship-focused message. It is a quick choice when you want a conventional folded card without editing an online template.

Printing note: Download the PDF rather than printing a browser image, then use Actual size in your PDF reader if the page is not being clipped.

3. You’re Still the One

Best for: A husband or partner who likes colorful retro designs. Format: One-page quarter-fold PDF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The colorful retro-machine artwork gives this husband Valentine a playful vintage feel. It is addressed specifically enough for a husband but can also suit a partner if the wording fits your relationship.

Paper tip: Use white or lightly tinted cardstock so the colors remain clear and the finished card holds its shape.

4. Wife Valentine

Best for: A wife. Format: One-page quarter-fold PDF.

This wife-specific Valentine is a direct, romantic option for a spouse. Because it is a quarter-fold layout, the printed page will look unusual when it first comes out of the printer; fold the test sheet before changing the orientation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Forever with You

Best for: A partner or fiancé. Format: One-page quarter-fold PDF.

Forever with You has a short, commitment-oriented message. It is a good choice for someone you want to address as a partner without using a spouse-specific greeting.

Best use: Print on cardstock, fold into the finished card, and add a longer handwritten message inside.

Friend, family, and non-romantic cards

Valentine’s Day does not have to mean romantic love. These designs are better for a best friend, sibling, parent, neighbor, family member, or Galentine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. XO XO XO

Best for: A romantic partner or close friend. Format: Editable, foldable 5-by-7-inch card.

XO XO XO from Greetings Island has a modern black background, arrows, and XOXO lettering. The source lists it as a free 5-by-7-inch foldable card that can be edited and printed.

Important free-use note: Greetings Island’s free cards may include a small watermark, and free and Premium designs can appear together in the library. Check the design page at the time you use it. The editor is useful if you want to add a name or message, but a direct PDF is a better choice if you need a clean print with no account or watermark uncertainty.

9. Love Bug

Best for: A playful partner, child, or friend. Format: Editable, foldable 5-by-7-inch card.

The ladybug-themed Love Bug card has a lighter tone than a traditional romantic greeting. It is especially useful when a child wants a fun design or when the recipient enjoys puns and illustrated characters.

Check before printing: The free version may carry a small watermark. Confirm that the design is still marked free rather than Premium before spending time editing it.

10. Perfect Chemistry

Best for: A science-loving partner, friend, student, or teacher. Format: Editable, foldable 5-by-5-inch square card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perfect Chemistry combines a chemistry-themed heart with a science pun. The source lists the finished card as 5 by 5 inches, so it is not the same shape as a standard 5-by-7 greeting card.

Envelope warning: A square card needs a square or appropriately sized envelope. Measure the folded card before buying envelopes, particularly if you plan to mail it.

Coloring cards and classroom exchanges

These are intentionally smaller or more activity-oriented than adult greeting cards. They work well when a child needs several cards for classmates or wants to color a card personally.

11. You Rule Beyond Measure

Branded, novelty, and teacher cards

These options are useful when a child wants a recognizable character or a specific novelty theme. Keep the original source and its apparent personal-sharing restrictions in mind; free access is not the same as permission to sell or redistribute the artwork.

19. I Ain’t Never Had a Friend Like You

Best for: A friend or child. Format: Small cut-out branded card.

This Disney Parks card is one of six cards on the Disney printable Valentine PDF. The friendship wording makes it more broadly usable than a romantic character card.

More free Valentine card options

If none of the 23 designs fits, these resources cover additional formats and recipients.

  • Aunt Annie’s simple Valentines: The color set provides six designs per page for cardstock and front/back printing, with PDFs intended for standard Letter or A4 paper. The black-and-white version is designed for coloring. Aunt Annie also offers folded heart-shaped cards; print, fold, glue if needed, optionally trim into hearts, and write on the back.
  • The Artisan Life children’s set: Includes postcard-style cards, small exchange cards with to/from fields, and fold-over cards. The creator licenses them for personal and classroom use but not redistribution, resale, or alteration.
  • SignUp workplace cards: This two-page PDF has 12 work-appropriate designs for colleagues, teams, volunteers, offices, schools, and nonprofits. Use a short appreciation message and avoid anything that could feel intimate or suggestive.
  • Canva Valentine card maker: Best for adding a photo, custom text, colors, or a more adult design. You can export a finished design as a printable PDF, but Canva mixes Free and Pro assets. Review the current Content License Agreement before commercial use.
  • Greetings Island’s Valentine library: Useful for editable cards, home printing, local print-shop printing, and online sharing. Filter carefully because free and Premium designs appear together and a free design may include a watermark. For comparison, the Paws-itively Love You design is currently marked Premium in the supplied research, so it should not be counted as a free pick unless its status changes.
  • Printabulls’ archive: A large image-grid collection organized around partners, parents, coworkers, teachers, children, pets, black-and-white designs, and classroom themes. It is a useful backup search rather than a quick, recipient-first list.

How to print a Valentine card without shrinking or cropping it

  1. Open the original source page. Avoid printing a low-resolution image reposted to social media or a browser preview. PBS gives the same basic advice for its printable cards: download the PDF and print the downloaded file directly. See its PDF-printing guidance.
  2. Download the file. Save it to your computer or phone, then open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF reader.
  3. Choose the correct paper size. U.S. Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches. A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Do not casually substitute one for the other if exact dimensions matter.
  4. Select Actual size when possible. In Acrobat, Actual size prints without scaling. Use Fit only when the template extends beyond your printer’s printable area and a small reduction is acceptable. Adobe explains the difference in its PDF print-scaling instructions.
  5. Print one test page. Check the margins, color, cut lines, and whether the front will be upright after folding.
  6. Cut and fold according to the file. Cut on dotted lines and fold on the panel divisions or instructions. A quarter-fold PDF may look upside down or backward before it is folded by design.
  7. Print the rest. Once the test card works, print the remaining copies.

If the card comes out upside down

Do not immediately rotate the PDF or change the printer orientation. LoveToKnow’s quarter-fold files intentionally place panels in different orientations so the finished card folds correctly. Fold the test copy first. For a two-sided card, follow the source’s duplex directions rather than assuming that every file uses the same setting. Some files specify flip on the long edge; others may require flip on the short edge.

If the front and back do not line up, print the pages separately and glue them together, or check the PDF’s instructions before trying duplex printing again. A test sheet saves cardstock and ink.

Paper, supplies, and finished size

Cardstock versus regular printer paper

Cardstock is best for full-size folded cards because it makes the card stiffer and gives folds a cleaner feel. LoveToKnow, Build-A-Bear, Aunt Annie, and In The Playroom all favor or recommend cardstock for their printable formats. Check your printer’s paper-weight limit first: some home printers cannot feed thick cardstock reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regular printer paper is fine for coloring cards and classroom handouts. It is also practical when children need many copies or when you plan to glue two printed sides together. Light cardstock is a useful middle ground if the printer can handle it.

Basic supplies

  • PDF reader or online editor
  • Printer
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Scissors or a paper trimmer
  • Ruler or bone folder for crisp folds
  • Pen or marker
  • Envelope, if the finished card will be mailed

For a classroom set, plan for extra paper in case a cut line or duplex setting goes wrong. A pencil, sticker, bookmark, or permitted non-food item can accompany a card, but a gift is never required.

Do you need an envelope?

  • Small classroom cards: Usually no. They are designed to be handed out individually and may include a to/from area.
  • Foldable 5-by-7-inch cards: Usually yes if you want to mail or formally present them. Greetings Island identifies its 5-by-7 cards as compatible with standard greeting-card envelopes, but check the finished dimensions after folding.
  • 5-by-5-inch Perfect Chemistry: Plan for a square envelope rather than assuming a standard rectangular greeting-card envelope will fit.
  • Quarter-fold PDFs: These can finish smaller than a commercial greeting card. Measure the folded card before buying envelopes.

If you are mailing in the United States, USPS letter mail must be rectangular and no larger than 11½ inches long, 6⅛ inches high, and ¼ inch thick. Square, rigid, lumpy, or unusually shaped pieces may require additional postage or nonmachinable handling. Check the current USPS letter requirements before mailing; do not rely on an old stamp price or an envelope assumption.

Free does not always mean watermark-free or commercially licensed

There are three different meanings of free in this roundup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Free direct PDF: LoveToKnow, McGraw Hill, Disney Parks, Build-A-Bear, and the In The Playroom teacher file provide downloadable files. Direct PDFs are generally the quickest route and avoid designing a card from scratch.
  2. Free editable card: Greetings Island allows customization on free designs, but a small watermark may appear. Premium designs can appear alongside free ones, so check the individual page before editing.
  3. Free design platform: Canva has both Free and Pro templates and assets. A template that looks free may contain a paid element or produce a watermark. Canva’s Content License Agreement distinguishes Free, Pro, Branded, and Education content, so review the license for the specific assets you use.

For personal gifts and ordinary classroom exchanges, these distinctions may not affect your choice. They matter if you want to print cards for a business, sell them, include them in a paid product, repost the PDF, or distribute the artwork online. For example, The Artisan Life permits personal and classroom use but prohibits altering, selling, and redistributing its files; Kate.net similarly restricts its cards to personal or school use and prohibits redistribution, modification, and commercial printing. See the Artisan Life terms and Kate.net usage rules before using those alternatives.

Branded Disney and Build-A-Bear designs should remain linked to their original sources and should not be presented as unrestricted commercial artwork. If a design is suddenly marked Premium, choose a direct PDF alternative rather than trying to bypass the paywall or removing a watermark.

Classroom and workplace etiquette

For a school exchange, follow the teacher’s instructions about the number of cards, names, gifts, and food. Candy and homemade treats can create allergy, dietary, and policy problems. Purely Printables also recommends checking classroom rules around food and gifts. Cards alone, stickers, pencils, or bookmarks are safer only when the school permits them.

For coworkers, keep the message professional and inclusive. SignUp’s workplace set is explicitly intended for offices, schools, nonprofits, volunteers, and teams. Avoid pet names, kisses, romantic declarations, or jokes that could make the recipient uncomfortable. A neutral card with a message such as Thank you for making work better is usually more appropriate than a romantic Valentine design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these Valentine cards really free?

The direct PDF resources in the list are free downloads, while Greetings Island and Canva are editable platforms with limitations. Greetings Island free designs may include a small watermark, and Canva may show Pro assets or require payment for particular elements. Always check the individual design and the creator’s terms before printing or using a card commercially.

Can I print these cards from my phone?

Usually, if your phone can download the PDF and access a compatible printer or print service. Download the original file rather than printing a browser preview, open it in a PDF reader, select the correct paper size, and print one test page. A computer is often easier for duplex settings and precise scaling.

What paper should I use for printable Valentine cards?

Use cardstock for full-size folded cards and small cards that will be handled repeatedly. Regular printer paper works for coloring pages and classroom exchanges, especially when you need many copies. Check your printer’s paper-weight limit before loading thick cardstock.

Why is my Valentine card printing upside down?

Quarter-fold PDFs often place panels in different orientations so the card reads correctly after folding. Do not rotate the page until you fold a test copy. For two-sided files, follow the source’s duplex instructions; flip on the long edge and flip on the short edge are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an envelope?

Small classroom cards usually do not need one. A finished 5-by-7-inch card generally fits a similar greeting-card envelope, while a 5-by-5-inch square card needs a square envelope. Measure the folded card before buying envelopes, especially for quarter-fold designs.

Can I add candy or a toy to a classroom Valentine?

Only if the school or teacher allows it. Food allergies, dietary restrictions, and classroom policies may prohibit candy or gifts. A card alone is sufficient; a permitted sticker, pencil, bookmark, or other non-food item may be an alternative.

Can I sell or redistribute these printable cards?

Do not assume so. Many free printables are limited to personal or classroom use and prohibit resale, commercial printing, modification, or redistribution. Canva has separate rules for Free, Pro, Branded, and Education content. Read the original creator’s license before using any card for a business.

What is the best Valentine card for a coworker?

Use SignUp’s workplace-specific PDF or a neutral Greetings Island or Canva design. Choose appreciation or teamwork language and avoid romantic wording, pet names, kisses, or anything that could feel personal in a professional setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if a Greetings Island design becomes Premium?

Choose another design or switch to a direct PDF from LoveToKnow, McGraw Hill, Build-A-Bear, Disney Parks, or In The Playroom. Template libraries can change their free and Premium classifications, so recheck the individual design page before relying on it.

The Bottom Line

The safest quick choice depends on the recipient: LoveToKnow for a full-size adult card, McGraw Hill or Build-A-Bear for classroom exchanges, In The Playroom or McGraw Hill for teachers, SignUp for coworkers, Greetings Island for editable text, and Canva for a photo card. Download the original file, print one test page at Actual size, fold or cut according to the design, and verify the usage terms before sharing or selling copies.
