An accent wall works best when it supports a room’s focal point or function, such as a fireplace, bed, desk, built-in, or dining nook. Choose a color or treatment that relates to the room’s fixed finishes and furnishings, and judge samples in the room’s changing daylight and artificial light.

Use the ideas below as starting points, then choose a treatment according to your room’s architecture, lighting, surface condition, and how permanent you want the change to be.
How to choose the right accent wall
Stand in the doorway and note which wall you see first. A wall opposite the main entrance often has strong visibility, but it is not automatically the right choice. Look for a wall with a defined purpose or feature:
- A fireplace, television, or built-in shelving
- The wall behind a sofa, bed, desk, or dining table
- An entry console, mirror, or artwork grouping
- The end of a hallway or a stair landing
- A small, contained zone within an open-plan room
Avoid choosing a wall solely because it is easy to reach. If the accent stops in an awkward place or leaves an architectural feature visually disconnected, the room may look unfinished. In an open plan, choose a color related to the surrounding rooms and repeat it in an accessory, cabinet detail, textile, or trim color.
How to choose an accent-wall color
Begin with permanent elements you are not planning to replace: flooring, tile, cabinetry, brick, countertops, woodwork, and large upholstered pieces. Compare their undertones with potential wall colors. Sherwin-Williams advises considering permanent finishes when choosing paint colors; treat any color examples as inspiration, not universal recommendations.
A coordinated approach is to choose a color that relates to one already in the room. You can pull a hue from a rug, pillow, curtain, or artwork. Complementary colors create more contrast, while analogous colors—neighboring hues on the color wheel—usually create a softer transition.
Test samples on the actual wall and view them in daylight and under the room’s artificial lighting. Sherwin-Williams notes that lighting can affect how a paint color appears. Nearby finishes, window direction, and light sources all matter, so treat claims that a particular color always makes a room larger, calmer, warmer, or more valuable as preferences, not guarantees.

Living room accent walls
1. Deep color behind the sofa
Define the seating zone with a saturated blue, green, brown, or another shade that relates to the room. Check the sofa, floor, fireplace, and other fixed finishes before choosing a color.
2. Painted fireplace wall
Give the fireplace a contrasting field of color while keeping the fireplace as the focal point. Choose a shade that emphasizes the feature without competing with patterned stone or brick.

A lighter hue can provide a color shift when a strong dark contrast would feel too heavy. Benjamin Moore features pink and blue living-space examples; test any similar shade against the room’s finishes and lighting.
4. Grooved or paneled feature wall
Let board-and-batten, wainscoting, or other paneling provide texture, then decide whether to keep its existing finish or paint it. Prepare paneling before painting: clean it, fill defects, and use an appropriate primer and tools. Sherwin-Williams discusses these preparation steps in its paneling-painting guidance.

Bedroom accent walls
6. Painted headboard wall
Anchor the bed with one color field behind it. Coordinate the wall with bedding, wood, and bedside finishes, and sample the color with the furniture in place.

Divide the wall horizontally or use paneling below a painted upper section for a layered look. Check the division against the trim, headboard, and furniture heights before painting.
8. Slatted wood panel behind the headboard
Use vertical or horizontal slats to add texture and visual rhythm. Benjamin Moore includes a slatted-wall bedroom example; consider how the finish and direction of the slats relate to the room’s other materials.
9. Restrained pastel wall
Consider pale blue, pink, or another soft shade when the goal is a gentle color shift instead of high contrast. Check the sample in both daylight and artificial light.
Dining-room and kitchen ideas
10. Green dining wall
Use a green wall to help distinguish the dining zone in an open-plan room. Keep it in conversation with nearby colors and materials, and test the shade in the room’s actual light.

12. Rich brown dining wall
Use a rich brown to create a stronger visual anchor among neutral furnishings. Compare it with the floor and table undertones before committing.
13. Painted kitchen alcove or inset shelves
Color inside a recess or behind inset shelves can add emphasis without turning the full wall into a broad block of color. Choose a shade that relates to nearby cabinetry and finishes.
14. Dark kitchen wall or painted zone
A dark accent can create contrast beside lighter finishes. Check the room’s light and the undertones of the surrounding cabinetry before choosing a shade.

15. Navy behind open shelving or a dining nook
Pair navy with a pale neutral nearby and coordinate it with cabinet and tile undertones. A related accent can help identify a nook without making it feel disconnected from the kitchen.
16. Pink against gray cabinetry
A pink wall can contrast with gray cabinetry, as in a Benjamin Moore kitchen example. Test the pairing against the actual cabinet gray, since undertones vary.
17. Striped breakfast-nook wall
Evenly spaced horizontal stripes can make a plain wall more graphic. Sherwin-Williams describes both high-contrast and colorful stripe approaches; plan the pattern around corners and trim so it looks deliberate.
Bathroom and powder-room ideas
18. Orange or sunny painted wall
A vivid warm color can bring energy to a bathroom. Benjamin Moore illustrates orange as one option; check how it looks beside tile, fixtures, and the room’s lighting.
19. Dark-blue painted alcove
Highlight an existing recess or vanity area rather than adding a new architectural feature. Relate the color to nearby finishes and consider the room’s ventilation and moisture conditions.
20. Red wall with a repeated accessory color
Repeat a red wall color in an accessory to connect the pieces. Benjamin Moore illustrates this approach; use the example as inspiration, not a prescribed palette.
21. Botanical wallpaper in a well-ventilated powder room
Wallpaper can add pattern and texture. Traditional wallpaper may be damaged by humidity in a bath or shower room, so choose a well-ventilated bathroom or a product specifically made for humid conditions. Follow the selected wallpaper’s installation instructions.
Entryway, office, and other smaller areas
22. Blue entry wall
A blue wall can enliven an often-overlooked entry. Coordinate it with nearby rooms and with any console, mirror, or artwork on the wall.
23. Soft neutral in a compact room
Greige, taupe, gray, or a pale hue can add definition without intense contrast. Benjamin Moore highlights neutral accents in smaller functional spaces; test the shade against the room’s fixed finishes.
24. Painted panel, border, or faux-finish focal detail
If a full contrasting wall feels too dominant, emphasize trim or an architectural feature, or use a smaller border or faux-finish treatment. Sherwin-Williams identifies these as options for creating a focal point.

- Confirm the focal point. Place or account for the bed, sofa, fireplace, desk, console, shelves, or dining furniture before selecting the wall.
- Inspect the surface. Repair defects and clean the wall. For paneling, Sherwin-Williams recommends cleaning, filling defects, priming, and choosing tools suited to the details. Follow the paint manufacturer’s surface-preparation instructions.
- Test the color in place. View samples in daylight and with the room’s lights on. Compare them with flooring, cabinetry, tile, upholstery, and trim.
- Protect the room. Move furniture away, cover the floor, and remove or protect hardware and switch plates.
- Gather the appropriate tools. Choose brushes, rollers, and other supplies for the surface and product. For paneling, use tools suited to its details and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Prepare and paint according to the product instructions. Follow the paint label for surface preparation, application, recoat time, and ventilation.
- Evaluate the result in context. Assess the wall with the room furnished, since artwork, curtains, lamps, and furniture affect the overall balance.
When paint is not the best choice
Choose wallpaper, removable decals, or trim when the desired effect depends more on pattern or texture than on color. Wallpaper can be useful for a mural or a pattern-led accent, but check the product’s surface and room-condition requirements before installation. In bathrooms, consider humidity and ventilation; traditional wallpaper may be vulnerable in bath or shower rooms, so choose a well-ventilated space or wallpaper made for humid conditions.

Measure carefully and follow the selected product’s instructions, especially in rooms with humidity. Paint can provide a straightforward color treatment, while wallpaper offers patterns and textures that would take more effort to reproduce with paint.
A simple decision framework
- Want a lower-contrast change? Try a soft neutral or a color related to existing finishes.
- Want architectural emphasis? Paint behind a fireplace, bed, or built-in, or use paneling to add texture.
- Want a pattern? Consider stripes, a mural, wallpaper, a painted inset, or a smaller border treatment.
- Working in a bathroom? Consider humidity and ventilation, and follow the wallpaper product’s instructions.
- Working in an open plan? Choose a related color to help distinguish a zone while keeping it connected to nearby materials.
- Want a smaller intervention? Emphasize trim, a recess, or an architectural detail instead of painting a full wall.
The right accent wall is the one that gives the room a reason to look there. Start with the furniture and sightline, connect the color to the materials already in the space, and choose a treatment suited to the room’s conditions.
FAQ
Which wall should be an accent wall?
A wall behind a bed, sofa, fireplace, built-in, desk, dining table, or entry console can be a strong candidate because it supports a focal point or function. Choose based on the room’s architecture and furniture arrangement, not simply on which wall is easiest to paint.
How do I choose an accent-wall color?
Start with finishes and furnishings that will stay, then test colors in the room’s daylight and artificial light. A color pulled from a rug, pillow, curtain, or artwork can help connect the wall to the rest of the room.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

It depends on the room and wallpaper. Traditional wallpaper may be damaged by humidity in a bath or shower room; consider a well-ventilated bathroom or a wallpaper product specifically made for humid conditions, and follow its instructions.
What are alternatives to painting a full accent wall?
Consider wallpaper, paneling, painted alcoves or inset shelves, a border, or a faux-finish focal detail. These can add pattern, texture, or emphasis without painting a broad wall in a contrasting color.
The Bottom Line
Choose the wall that supports a focal point or room function, then connect its color or treatment to the finishes already in the space. Test colors in real lighting, prepare surfaces according to product guidance, and consider humidity and ventilation before choosing bathroom wallpaper.
