Every December 23, Oaxaca City’s Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes) turns the Christmas-season market into a public exhibition of carved scenes. Local artisans and horticultural participants use radishes alongside flor inmortal and totomoxtle to depict everyday life, customs, legends, dances and other cultural subjects. The event is a living tradition—not simply a display of decorative vegetables—and its annual program details can change.
What is Noche de Rábanos?
Noche de Rábanos is a one-day Christmas-season celebration in Oaxaca City, held on December 23 and associated with the Christmas Eve market. Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture records the festival and its connection to that seasonal market; tourism sources place the public display in the city’s Zócalo, the central plaza. Secretariat of Culture of Mexico, Sistema de Información Cultural; Visit Mexico.
The event’s defining feature is a public exhibition of elaborate scenes made with radishes and other natural materials. The subject matter connects the craft to Oaxacan community life: works portray traditions, local customs, legends and dances. The carved pieces are presented as scenes, not just as individual vegetable sculptures.

What visitors see in the exhibition
Radishes and other natural materials
Radishes are central, but they are not the only material. Official reporting on the 2025 edition describes works made with radishes, flor inmortal (an everlasting flower) and totomoxtle (dried corn husks). The choice of materials gives the displays varied color and texture, while the scenes draw on local culture and daily life. Government of the State of Oaxaca, December 23, 2025.
Local makers and cultural subjects
Artisans and horticultural participants create the works. Their scenes may depict everyday activities, traditions, legends and dances, making the exhibition both a display of craft and a way to represent cultural stories and community identity. The particular works vary from one edition to another.

When and where to attend
The recurring date is December 23, and the exhibition takes place at Oaxaca City’s Zócalo. The exact opening time and surrounding activities should be checked in official announcements for the year you plan to visit: details published for one edition are not a standing schedule.
For example, Sectur Oaxaca announced that public viewing began at 15:00 on December 23 for the 2025 edition. Its 2025 program also included a radish harvest and theatrical presentation on December 20 and a procession on December 22. Those were dated activities for that edition, not confirmation of the schedule for another year. Sectur Oaxaca, December 19, 2025.
