The 26 jack-o’-lantern faces
Classic and beginner-friendly faces
1. Frankenstein’s Monster: A friendly, recognizable face suited to a tall or round pumpkin. Keep the bolts, eyes, and mouth large enough to avoid fragile pieces.
3. Jumbled Face: An asymmetrical expression that can look intentional even if the transfer is imperfect.
5. Laughing Face: Large features read well from a distance. Leave a solid strip around the mouth to strengthen the front.
11. Basic Shapes: X-shaped eyes, a triangle nose, and a simple mouth make this a strong first carving or painting project.
15. Scared Face: Large oval eyes are easier to transfer and cut than narrow angular shapes.
16. Dorky Face: A friendly, emoji-like expression. Keep openings large enough for light to show.
18. Big Grin: A bold silhouette with little fine detail; a wide, squat pumpkin suits it well.

10. Undercover Jack-o’-Lantern: Sunglasses keep the disguise recognizable even if you simplify the face. Painting is an option for faux pumpkins or children’s participation.
13. Googly Eyes: Paint some features rather than cutting every shape through the wall; painted details preserve strength and are easy to adjust.
14. Trio of Smiley Faces: Treat this as a group display of three pumpkins. Place them on a stable surface where they will not create a trip hazard.
21. Baby Face: Large eyes and a tongue create the expression without intricate lines. Keep the connections around the mouth intact.
25. Silly Face: Teeth and a tongue can make fragile sections. Leave broad bridges or paint the smallest details.
26. Kissy Face Emoji: Etched areas glow more softly than open cutouts; thin the wall behind them selectively or use a bright LED.
Spooky character faces
6. Spooky Witch Face: Choose a taller pumpkin with a smooth front and leave a border near the sides.
9. Skull-and-Crossbones: Use etching for texture and simplify marks that would become thin slivers after resizing.
12. Wicked Grin: Make gaps between jagged teeth wide enough to keep the mouth from breaking.
17. Silly Skeleton: Keep the grin broad and avoid narrow bone details; paint small marks if needed.

22. Haunting Vampire: Fangs and glaring eyes give the face its character. Avoid crowding the mouth with tiny openings.
Skulls and detailed designs
4. Skull Pumpkin Face: The source design uses a shallow etched outer area and may include a snake embellishment. Treat etched sections as shading rather than removing them completely.
8. Sugar Skull: A detailed pattern that may combine etching, drilling, and selective cuts. Use a thick-walled pumpkin and consider a reusable faux pumpkin.
20. Great Ape: Deep etching around the eyes and carved areas call for patience and a thick-walled pumpkin. Preserve material around the eyes, mouth, and outline.
23. Bucktooth Grin: The etched eye area needs to glow, while the teeth need strong bridges. Thin only behind the etched area if necessary.
What do the stencil marks mean?
Through-cut: Remove the wall completely so light passes through. Etching or scraping: Remove the skin or a shallow layer of flesh so the remaining wall glows softly. Drilling: Make small round holes for points of light. Painting: Use the stencil as a surface guide without weakening the pumpkin. Add-ons: Use paper, felt, foam, or other accessories for a no-carve result.
Follow a stencil’s legend if it has one. Otherwise, mark areas to cut out, etch, or leave intact. An enclosed piece is an island; it needs one or more bridges connecting it to the pumpkin so it does not fall out. See The Pumpkin Lady’s bridge and island guidance for structural advice.
Choose a pumpkin and transfer the stencil
- Choose a firm pumpkin. Avoid soft spots, mold, deep bruises, cracks, or a collapsing side.
- Match shape to design. Tall faces need vertical space; wide grins suit broad pumpkins. Detailed faces benefit from a smooth, thick-walled front.
- Check stability and freshness. Pick a flat base and retain a healthy stem, but never carry the pumpkin by its stem. These selection recommendations are consistent with Martha Stewart and University of Nevada Extension.
- Measure the usable front. Resize the design so its outer features stay inside the sides, and avoid placing important details across deep ridges.
- Make the paper conform. Cut short radial slits around the stencil’s edges, overlap the flaps slightly, and tape it down in sections.
- Transfer the lines. Pierce the pattern with an awl, T-pin, pushpin, or needle tool at roughly 1/8- to 1/4-inch intervals. Remove the sheet carefully and keep it nearby as a reference.
- Mark the technique. Use a washable marker to clarify cut, etched, and intact areas if the stencil does not provide a clear key.
Martha Stewart’s carving and transfer guide also describes adapting a paper stencil to a pumpkin’s curve.
Tools for simple and detailed designs
Beginner kit
- Pumpkin scraper or large spoon
- Purpose-made serrated pumpkin saw
- Awl, T-pin, or pushpin
- Masking or painter’s tape and washable marker
- Newspaper or a washable drop cloth
- Battery-operated LED tea light or glow stick
Advanced kit
- Fleshing tool or scoop for controlled wall thinning
- Linoleum or gouge tools for etching
- Drill with small bits and eye protection
- Fine detail carving tools
- Petroleum jelly for exposed cuts where appropriate
Martha Stewart’s tool guide covers purpose-made saws, fleshing tools, awls, gouges, drills, and petroleum jelly.
How to carve a through-cut face
- Prepare a stable work area. Use a flat, well-lit surface and keep the pumpkin out of a child’s lap.
- Choose an opening. For an LED, an opening in the bottom or back leaves the face uninterrupted and lets the pumpkin sit over the light.
- Remove seeds and pulp. Scrape the interior until the working wall is reasonably even.
- Thin selectively. Martha Stewart recommends about 1/2 to 3/4 inch as a general wall thickness for carving and illumination. Do not thin structural areas around teeth, bridges, corners, and islands aggressively.
- Transfer the stencil. Tape and prick the design as described above.
- Cut smaller details first. Keep your free hand behind the tool, cut away from your body, and withdraw and reposition a stuck blade instead of forcing it.
- Preserve bridges. Widen weak connections or turn tiny cutouts into etched or painted details.
- Remove pieces gently. Push cut pieces inward rather than prying outward, which can tear the skin.
- Check the result. Clean loose pulp and marker residue, then test the face with the light inside.
Etching, drilling, and painting
For an etched face, scrape away the skin and remove shallow flesh gradually. If the area is too dim, thin only behind it or use a brighter enclosed LED. For drilled detail, support the pumpkin firmly and drill slowly, leaving enough material between holes to prevent weak spots.
Recommended Free Tools
For a painted face, use the stencil on a clean, dry pumpkin and apply light coats of craft paint. Painting works especially well for Googly Eyes, Undercover Jack-o’-Lantern, and Silly Hair Pumpkins. Keep paper or foam additions away from heat.

Carving safety
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that adults handle pumpkin carving. Children can scoop seeds and pulp, hold or trace a stencil, paint, or attach decorations. Use a purpose-made pumpkin saw rather than an improvised kitchen knife.
- Work on a stable, flat, well-lit surface; keep it dry and uncluttered.
- Keep the non-cutting hand behind the tool and cut away from the body.
- Do not carve in a child’s lap or force a stuck blade.
- Wear eye protection when drilling or when small pieces may pop free.
- Prefer battery-operated lights or glow sticks. The CPSC and NFPA warn about open-flame hazards.
- If you use a real candle, supervise it continuously and keep it away from combustible decorations and walkways.
- Check that an LED’s battery compartment is secured around children. The CPSC’s 2026 recall notice illustrates the risk from accessible button batteries.
Make the jack-o’-lantern last
Carve close to the event because display life varies with temperature, rain, sun, freezing conditions, pumpkin condition, and how much material is removed. North Carolina Cooperative Extension suggests planning to carve about 8–10 days before an event; K-State Extension notes that noticeable decay may begin after a few days to about a week.
- Store it cool, shaded, and dry. Keep it off wet ground and bring it indoors during freezing weather.
- Remove pulp thoroughly. Leftover pulp and moisture encourage deterioration.
- Use an LED. It avoids candle heat, which can shorten the pumpkin’s display life.
- Protect exposed cuts where appropriate. University of Nevada Extension and Utah State Extension discuss petroleum jelly as a way to help slow drying.
- Match treatment to disposal. Follow product directions and never mix cleaners.
Bleach, vinegar, composting, and wildlife
North Carolina Cooperative Extension says a 10% bleach solution may be used for a display-only pumpkin, but bleach is unsuitable if you plan to compost it or feed it to livestock or wildlife. For a composting or animal-feed plan, the extension gives a vinegar mixture of 10 parts water to 1 part vinegar, with a 20–30 minute soak. Do not feed moldy, badly decomposed, or inappropriately chemically treated pumpkins to animals.

Seeds can be rinsed, dried, seasoned, and roasted if they were saved before exposure to dirt or chemicals. Carving pumpkins are generally more watery and stringy than pie pumpkins. Once a carved pumpkin has been left outdoors or at room temperature, treat it as decoration rather than food; Michigan State University Extension describes carved pumpkins as potentially hazardous food, and University of Nevada Extension says jack-o’-lantern pumpkins are generally better for decoration than eating.
For Candy Monster Face, put wrapped candy in a clean, removable bowl or liner, not directly against a pumpkin that has been outdoors, chemically treated, or left unrefrigerated.
Faux pumpkins and download checks
Faux pumpkins are useful for detailed designs such as Sugar Skull and Great Ape because they can be reused and worked on indoors. Follow the manufacturer’s cutting and ventilation instructions, and do not assume a faux pumpkin is safe for a candle or high heat.
The Yahoo-hosted gallery is old, and current download links could not be independently tested. Try the publisher’s page, search the exact design name plus printable or PDF, and confirm image quality and usage terms before relying on a file. Do not promise a free download unless it has been checked.
Troubleshooting common stencil problems
The paper will not lie flat. What should I do?
Cut radial slits around the stencil, overlap the flaps slightly, and tape it down in sections. Transfer one section at a time rather than forcing the whole sheet against the curve.
Why does the design look distorted?
The stencil may be too large or wrap around the pumpkin’s sides. Resize it, move it to the flattest area, and keep important features away from deep ridges.
What if pieces fall out or the mouth breaks?
The pattern may have weak bridges, narrow teeth, or tight gaps. Widen connections and gaps, round sharp corners, or convert small cutouts to etched or painted details. Toothpicks may sometimes reinforce a damaged section, but simplifying fragile details is more reliable.
Why does the face not glow?
The wall may be too thick, the light too dim, or the area etched rather than cut through. Thin only behind the design or switch to a brighter LED.

What should I do if a stencil download is missing?
Try the publisher’s page, then search the exact face name with PDF or printable. Check resolution and usage terms before using or recommending the file.
Why did my pumpkin collapse early?
It may have been carved too early, exposed to heat, rain, sun, or freezing temperatures, or thinned too aggressively. Keep it cool, shaded, and dry, use an LED, and consider a backup pumpkin for an important display.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest jack-o’-lantern face to stencil?
Basic Shapes is a simple first choice because it uses an X-shaped eye, triangle nose, and uncomplicated mouth. Big Grin, Scared Face, Dorky Face, and Ghost Face are also beginner-friendly.
Can children carve a pumpkin?
The CPSC recommends that adults do the carving. Children can scoop seeds and pulp, hold or trace the stencil, paint, or attach decorations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I cut the pumpkin opening in the top or bottom?
For a battery-operated LED, a bottom or back opening keeps the face uninterrupted and lets the pumpkin sit over the light. Follow your lighting setup; an open-flame candle should not be the default.
How do I keep a paper stencil flat on a pumpkin?
Cut short radial slits around the paper’s outer edges, overlap the flaps slightly, and tape the stencil down in sections. Pierce the design at roughly 1/8- to 1/4-inch intervals.
What do shaded parts of a stencil mean?
There is no universal shading key. Follow the stencil’s legend or mark areas to cut, etch, and leave intact yourself. Preserve bridges that connect enclosed islands.
Can I paint a stencil instead of carving it?
Yes. Googly Eyes, Undercover Jack-o’-Lantern, and Silly Hair Pumpkins work well as painted or no-carve projects. Use thin paint coats and keep paper or foam away from heat.
How long does a carved pumpkin last?
It depends on weather, pumpkin condition, and how much is removed. North Carolina Cooperative Extension suggests planning to carve about 8–10 days before an event, while K-State Extension notes that noticeable rot may begin after a few days to about a week.
Can I eat a pumpkin after carving it?
Save clean seeds before exposure to dirt or chemicals. Treat the flesh of a carved pumpkin left outdoors or at room temperature as decoration, not food.
Are faux pumpkins good for detailed stencils?
Yes. They can be reused for detailed etched designs. Follow the manufacturer’s tool and ventilation instructions and use an enclosed LED rather than assuming the material is candle-safe.
The bottom line
For an easier result, choose a firm pumpkin with a broad front, resize the face to fit, preserve strong bridges, and use an LED. Start with Basic Shapes or Big Grin, choose Googly Eyes or Silly Hair Pumpkins for a paint-and-decorate project, and reserve Sugar Skull or Great Ape for etching and drilling. Verify each old gallery download before describing it as free or printable.
