Yes—you can make Halloween décor, party supplies, costumes, gifts, and children’s activities in one crafting session. The 80 ideas below use ordinary paper, recycled containers, pumpkins, fabric scraps, jars, and basic craft supplies. Planning times are editorial estimates for active work, not hands-on test results. Most take 10 minutes to 2 hours; projects marked with drying can still be displayed the same day, but none requires overnight curing.

Use the labels to filter by age, mess, materials, location, and tools. For any paper, fabric, dried-flower, or cheesecloth lantern, use an LED light—not an open flame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. Cheesecloth ghosts

Drape cheesecloth over a support such as an upturned bowl, apply watered-down glue or fabric stiffener, and let it dry thoroughly before lifting it. Time: 45–90 min · Age: 6+ with supervision · Mess: medium · Drying: same-day drying · Use: indoor or sheltered outdoor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  3. Ombre pumpkin

Time: 60–120 min · Age: teen/adult or older child · Mess: medium · Drying: same-day drying · Use: adult-style décor.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  4. Decoupage pumpkin

Cut paper leaves, bats, flowers, or vintage-style motifs, brush decoupage medium onto a faux or real pumpkin, and smooth the pieces down from the center outward. Add a thin top coat after the first layer sets. If paper wrinkles, lift it gently while wet and use smaller pieces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  10. Yarn-wrapped faux pumpkin

Secure the beginning of the yarn at the stem, wrap it around a foam or plastic pumpkin in even rows, and glue or tuck the final end. Use contrasting yarn for stripes. This project is reusable but not suitable for wet outdoor display unless the materials are labeled for it.

Time: 45–90 min · Age: 8+ · Mess: low · Drying: short drying · Use: indoor décor.

5. Pumpkin carving and lighting

These projects can be finished in a day, but they need more adult involvement. Real pumpkins are perishable: the University of Illinois Extension recommends carving close to Halloween; lifespan depends on weather and conditions. Choose an unblemished pumpkin, keep it cool until carving, and use an LED light.

  1. Stencil jack-o’-lantern

Clean the pumpkin, tape on a simple stencil, transfer the design, and carve with a pumpkin tool. An adult should control the cutting and stabilize the pumpkin; children can choose the design, scoop seeds with supervision, and paint the face afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time: 60–120 min · Age: adult-led · Mess: high · Drying: none · Tool: adult carving tool · Use: indoor or sheltered outdoor.

  2. Drilled constellation pumpkin

Mark dots on a pumpkin, drill through the marks, clear away debris, and place an LED inside. An adult must operate the drill on a stable work surface with eye protection and ventilation. No-drill alternative: punch holes in a paper lantern or press dots into a faux pumpkin.

Time: 45–90 min · Age: adult tool · Mess: medium · Drying: none · Use: sheltered outdoor or indoor.

  3. Pumpkin vase

Cut and hollow a pumpkin, then place a watertight container inside before adding flowers. Keep the container from leaking onto furniture and make this project close to the event because the pumpkin is perishable. Never combine flowers, water, and a candle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time: 60–120 min · Age: adult-led · Mess: high · Drying: none · Use: indoor table décor.

  5. Stacked pumpkin totem

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

    One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time: 60–120 min · Age: teen/adult or older child · Mess: medium · Drying: same-day drying · Use: indoor or sheltered outdoor.

  6. Pumpkin-seed mosaic

Use cleaned, fully dry seeds or purchased craft seeds. Sketch a pumpkin face or abstract pattern on cardstock, brush glue into small areas, and press seeds into place. Keep the piece flat while it dries and keep loose seeds away from toddlers.

Time: 45–90 min · Age: 8+ · Mess: medium · Drying: short drying · Use: wall art or gift.

  7. Melted-crayon pumpkin

  10. Faux-pumpkin candy bowl

Best picks by situation

If you have only 15 minutes

Make coffee-filter ghosts, paper doorknob ghosts, pipe-cleaner spiders, bookmarks, or paper crowns. They use little or no wet adhesive and can go straight onto a wall, table, or party table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have only recycled materials

Choose toilet-roll witches or mummies, egg-carton bats or spiders, paper-bag monsters, milk-jug ghosts, cereal-box tombstones, or a cardboard coffin box. Cardstock details, markers, and tape can replace most paint and glue.

If you are crafting with preschoolers

Choose paper plates, coffee filters, handprint art, stamps with adult-cut shapes, or paper crowns. Adults should handle scissors, keep paint off skin unless it is specifically labeled for that use, and remove googly eyes, beads, pom-poms, and other small parts from the activity area.

If you need favors for 20 people

Pre-cut monster treat bags, black-cat place cards, bat drink stirrers, bookmarks, paper crowns, invitations, or cupcake toppers. Make one sample first, then create an assembly line: cutting, decorating, attaching, drying, and packing.

If you want décor that lasts beyond Halloween

Use faux pumpkins, felt bats, yarn wreaths, fabric totes, cardstock templates, and painted frames. Store them flat or in labeled boxes and keep them dry. Real carved pumpkins, natural leaves, untreated paper, and cheesecloth are more temporary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the most polished painted result

Choose an ombre pumpkin, decoupage pumpkin, black-cat pumpkin, chalkboard pumpkin, haunted portrait frame, or plastic-bottle pumpkin. Clean the surface first, apply thin coats, and switch to paper or adhesive details when the final coat is not dry enough to handle.

Same-day troubleshooting

The paint is still wet.

Move the piece to a ventilated area and stop adding layers. Display it on its protective work surface, or replace painted details with cardstock, markers, stickers, or ribbon. Do not stack or transport it until the product label’s drying time has passed.

Glue wrinkled the paper.

Use less wet glue, apply it to the edges rather than flooding the sheet, and weigh the paper flat under clean scrap paper. For an urgent repair, switch to glue dots, double-sided tape, or a glue stick.

The adhesive will not hold.

Clean and dry the surface, roughen glossy plastic only if appropriate, and use an adhesive labeled for that material. Clips, string, zip ties, and paper tabs are useful no-glue alternatives. Do not use hot glue around children or on heat-sensitive plastic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The paper decoration blew away.

Bring it indoors or under cover. Add a heavier base, secure it with removable hardware, or remake it from a labeled outdoor material. Untreated paper, tissue, cardboard, and fabric should not be described as weatherproof.

The pumpkin is soft or collapsing.

Do not carve or light it. Replace it with a faux pumpkin, a firm undamaged pumpkin, or a paper-cup lantern. Carve real pumpkins close to Halloween because cutting starts moisture loss and decay; University of Illinois Extension provides pumpkin selection and lifespan guidance.

The label is peeling from a jar.

Dry the jar completely, trim the label, and reinforce only the outside edges with suitable removable tape. Keep the label and all craft products away from food contact; put wrapped treats in a separate liner or bowl.

A child cannot safely use the suggested tool.

Make the adult-only cut, drill, glue, heat, or spray-paint step before the activity and give the child decorating or assembly work. A craft knife becomes scissors-only with larger openings; a drilled pumpkin becomes a paper lantern; spray paint becomes brush paint or black cardstock.

Cleanup, storage, and disposal

  • Collect loose batteries immediately and store reusable LED lights with their batteries removed if the product instructions allow it. Never leave spare coin cells in a craft bin.
  • Let paint and glue dry before stacking projects. Store felt, faux pumpkins, wreaths, totes, templates, and cardstock décor in labeled, dry containers.
  • Keep real pumpkins and natural leaves separate from reusable décor. Compost or dispose of them according to local rules once they soften or mold.
  • Do not pour paint, glue, or strong craft chemicals down a drain unless the product label permits it. Follow the label for disposal and ventilation.
  • Remove decorations from exits, stairs, walkways, heaters, and light fixtures after the celebration. A pretty decoration is not worth creating a trip or fire hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Halloween crafts can I finish in the shortest time?

Coffee-filter ghosts, paper doorknob ghosts, pipe-cleaner spiders, bookmarks, and paper crowns generally take about 10–20 minutes of active work. They are good choices when you need decoration without drying time.

What Halloween crafts are best for preschoolers?

Paper-plate ghosts, coffee-filter ghosts, handprint monster art, simple stamps, and paper crowns are the easiest supervised choices. Adults should do the cutting, use only age-appropriate labeled art products, and keep small parts such as googly eyes, beads, pom-poms, and batteries away from young children.

Can I use real candles in Halloween craft lanterns?

Use battery-operated LED tea lights or candles instead. Paper, fabric, dried flowers, cheesecloth, and cardboard can ignite, and NFPA and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend flameless lighting for Halloween decorations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will a carved pumpkin last?

A carved pumpkin’s lifespan varies with weather and conditions. University of Illinois Extension recommends carving close to Halloween; keep an uncarved pumpkin cool until then and use an LED light after carving.

Which projects work outdoors?

Milk-jug ghosts, plastic-bottle pumpkins, faux pumpkins, and sheltered luminaria are the most practical options in this list. Untreated paper, cardboard, tissue, and fabric are not rainproof; use only materials labeled for outdoor exposure and secure lightweight décor against wind.

What should I do if a craft is not dry by the end of the day?

Stop adding layers, move the project to a ventilated area, and display it on its protective work surface only if it will not be touched. For an immediate substitute, use cardstock, markers, stickers, ribbon, glue dots, or double-sided tape instead of wet paint or glue.

The Bottom Line

For the fastest reliable result, choose paper ghosts, bats, garlands, treat bags, or bookmarks. For attractive adult décor, choose a painted or decoupaged faux pumpkin, a wreath, a haunted frame, or cheesecloth ghosts. Plan the work around active time and drying time, keep adult-only tools clearly separated, and use LED lighting throughout. That combination gives you a genuinely displayable Halloween craft today without hiding the practical limits or safety hazards.
