ChatGPT can edit images in three beginner-friendly ways: you can describe a change directly in a conversation, upload an existing image and ask for an edit, or use the selection tool to target one part of the picture. The first two workflows overlap—an uploaded image can be edited conversationally—but each approach is useful in a different situation.

These are prompt-based edits, not traditional layer-based, nondestructive editing. Describe what should change, state what must remain untouched, and inspect the result carefully because an edit can extend beyond the area you intended.
Which ChatGPT image-editing method should you use?

Choose direct chat for a quick overall change, upload an image when the artwork or photograph already exists on your device, and use Select when the edit should be confined to one region.

Before you begin
OpenAI’s current documentation says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all ChatGPT tiers, and ChatGPT Images is available on the web, iOS, and Android. The documentation separately lists Images with thinking as available on Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability described as forthcoming in that documentation. These features and labels can change, and controls may differ by account, device, or platform.
You do not need to write a technical prompt. Plain language works well, but a useful request normally includes five details:

- What to change: name the object, person, color, background, or text.
- Where it is: say “the person in the foreground,” “the upper-left corner,” or “the sign behind the subject.”
- What must stay unchanged: mention the pose, clothing, facial expression, composition, lighting, or other important details.
- How the result should look: specify realistic, illustrated, minimal, painterly, brighter, warmer, or another desired treatment.
- What shape you need: request a square, vertical 4:5, wide banner, or another aspect ratio when appropriate.
Method 1: Describe the edit directly in the conversation
This is the quickest approach when you are working with an image generated by ChatGPT. You can open the image and ask for an addition, removal, replacement, adjustment, or change in composition without first selecting a region.
Steps
- Open ChatGPT and start a conversation.
- Create an image with ChatGPT Images, or open an image that ChatGPT has already generated.
- Describe the change you want in the conversation.
- State the location of the change and what should remain unchanged.
- Review the new result. If it is not right, ask for a narrower revision rather than starting over immediately.
Useful prompts
Remove the people in the background, but keep the person in the foreground unchanged.Change the background to a sunny park while preserving the subject’s pose, clothing, and facial expression.Make this image square for a profile picture and keep the subject centered.Replace the text on the sign with “Open Saturday” and keep the same overall design.
ChatGPT Images can also be asked to add text or details, make a background transparent, and produce different aspect ratios. Generated text and fine details should still be checked closely in the finished image rather than assumed to be perfect.
How to make a broad edit safer
Tell ChatGPT both the change and the boundaries. For example, instead of saying Make this portrait brighter, try:
Brighten the portrait slightly, reduce the harsh shadows, preserve natural skin texture, and do not change the person’s facial features, clothing, or background.

This does not guarantee that every surrounding detail will remain identical. It simply gives the image editor clearer priorities.
Method 2: Upload an existing image and describe the change
Use this method for a photograph, scanned painting, product image, sketch, or other graphic that already exists. Attach the image to a ChatGPT conversation, then explain the desired result in ordinary language. OpenAI’s documentation describes ChatGPT as able to analyze uploaded images and modify them through natural-language instructions.
Steps
- Open a ChatGPT conversation.
- Attach the image from your device.
- Describe what should change.
- If there are several people or objects, identify the exact subject and location.
- Review the edited image and refine the request if necessary.
Prompts for uploaded images

For a painting or artwork, be especially specific about whether you want an edit to the artwork itself or only to its presentation. For example:
Remove the glare from the glass over this painting, preserve the brushwork and colors, and keep the frame unchanged.

Uploading on a Mac
OpenAI’s macOS instructions describe uploading a photo from the Photos library or file system through the plus icon. The app also documents taking a photo with the webcam, subject to the relevant Photos and camera permissions. These capture controls are macOS-specific; do not assume that the same buttons appear on every platform.

Method 3: Use the selection tool for a targeted edit
When only one part of an image needs changing, use the editor’s Select control before describing the edit. This provides ChatGPT with a visual indication of the area you want to modify, which is often more useful than describing a small object only in text.
Steps on the web
- Open the image in the conversation or from the Images area.
- Open the editor.
- Choose Select.
- Highlight the part of the image that should change.
- Describe the requested edit in the editor or conversation panel.
- Use Undo or Redo if the highlight needs adjustment.
- Choose Save when you are satisfied with the result.
Steps on mobile
- Tap a generated image to open the editor.
- Choose Select.
- Adjust the selection-tool size with the slider if necessary.
- Tap Next.
- Describe the change in the conversation panel.
Targeted-edit prompts
Remove only the logo inside the highlighted area and reconstruct the background.Change the color of the highlighted jacket from blue to red, without changing the person’s face or the background.Replace the highlighted sky with a golden-hour sunset, but do not change the buildings.Make the highlighted background transparent and preserve the object’s edges.
Selection is a guide, not a perfect mask
OpenAI warns that image-editing highlights are not always precise and that edits may extend beyond the selected area. Treat the selection as a targeting aid rather than a pixel-perfect mask.

You can also describe the boundary in words—for example, Change only the sky above the roofline; do not alter the roof, windows, or trees.
How to request aspect-ratio changes
The editor can regenerate an image in a different aspect ratio, and you can also request the shape in your prompt. This is useful when preparing artwork for different placements:
- Square:
Make this a square profile image and keep the subject centered. - Vertical:
Reframe this as a vertical 4:5 post without cutting off the figure. - Wide:
Extend the composition into a wide banner while keeping the original subject on the right.
Ask for the aspect ratio rather than promising a particular pixel resolution. The available controls and output options may vary by interface.
How to save, copy, or share the result
Images created with ChatGPT are automatically saved under the Images area. From the image controls, you can copy the image, save it to your device, or share it with another app. The exact placement of these controls can vary between the web, iOS, Android, and desktop interfaces.

For important work, keep the original upload or earlier generated version as well as the edited result. ChatGPT’s documented workflow is conversational image generation and editing; it should not be treated as a traditional layer-based editing file with independently recoverable layers.

The edit changes too much of the picture
Use the selection tool, narrow the wording, and list the elements that must remain unchanged. Instead of Fix the background, write Remove only the person at the far left; preserve the central subject, shadows, wall texture, and camera framing.
The wrong person or object is edited
Identify the subject by position, appearance, or relationship to nearby objects. “The person in the foreground wearing the red coat” is clearer than “the person.” A selection can provide additional guidance.
The result no longer matches the original style
State the style and preservation requirements directly: Keep the original watercolor texture, paper grain, muted palette, and loose brushwork; change only the sky. Inspect the result because a generated revision can still reinterpret surrounding details.

Quote the exact replacement text and describe its location and design. For example: Replace the lettering on the storefront sign with “Open Saturday,” keep the same placement and color, and make the words legible. Check every character in the output before using it publicly.
The selected area is difficult to control
Adjust the selection-tool size on mobile, use Undo or Redo on the web, and try a smaller area. If the edit still affects neighboring content, make separate, narrower requests instead of combining several changes.

What ChatGPT is—and is not—doing
ChatGPT edits images through conversational instructions. It can generate a revised image, remove or add elements, alter backgrounds, change details, and reframe an image. It is not documented here as a conventional editor with a layer stack, masks, or guaranteed nondestructive control.
If you need highly controlled, repeatable adjustments—such as independently editable layers, exact masking, or detailed compositing—a layer-based image-editing software may be a better next step. That kind of software is not required for the three ChatGPT workflows above; it is an option when prompt-based editing is not precise enough.
