Basting temporarily holds a quilt’s top, batting, and backing together so the layers stay aligned while you quilt. The three common options are safety pins, spray adhesive, and temporary hand stitches. Whichever you choose, smooth the sandwich without stretching it and work from the center toward the edges.
Prepare the quilt sandwich
Spread the backing, batting, and quilt top on a large, flat surface. Secure the backing, center and smooth the batting over it, then center and smooth the quilt top. Keep the fabric relaxed rather than pulling it taut; stretching can leave the layers distorted when they are released.
#1 Best Overall
- The quilting pins are not dull, they can penetrate fabric easily
- The Curved Safety quilting pins are made of stain steel, Sturdy
- Suitable for Quilting Sewing, easy to use
- Size 2 safety pins, with length 1.5 inch (38mm)

If the backing is pieced, press its seam allowances open to reduce bulk. Plan to baste from the center toward the edges, smoothing as you go so the layers do not shift. If a professional machine quilter will finish the quilt, follow that quilter’s preparation instructions.
1. Pin basting
Pin basting uses rustproof safety pins to hold all three layers together. It is a common choice for machine quilting because pins are easier to remove as you quilt than basting threads.
Rank #2
- Sturdy, Sharp, Open and Close easily.
- Easier to use than straight safety pins for quilt basting.
- Size 3 handles the layers with the greatest ease on thick, fluffy quilts.
- The package contains 100 Ct. Curved Basting Pins, size 3 (2") with a reusable plastic case.
- Use for sewing, quilting, crafts, jewelry making and DIY projects.
- Start near the center of the quilt. Place pins along horizontal and vertical lines to divide the sandwich into quadrants.
- Fill each area with additional pins, working outward from the center and smoothing the fabric as needed.
- Space pins about 3 to 4 inches apart. This is the spacing recommended by the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, not a universal rule for every quilt or quilting pattern.
Keep the quilt flat as you pin. For a visual demonstration of the technique, see National Quilters Circle’s pin-basting video.
2. Spray basting
Spray basting uses a temporary quilting adhesive to hold the layers together. The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors suggest it for smaller projects such as table runners and wall hangings. Use a product intended for quilting and follow its label, since application directions can differ by adhesive.
Rank #3
- Sturdy, Sharp, Open and Close easily
- The curved feature made it easy to go through several layers easily
- Rust resistant, Nickel-plated steel
- Size 2 recommended for high loft batting
- This package contains 100 Ct. Curved Safety Pins, Size 2(1-1/2")
- Secure the backing on your flat work surface, then lay the batting over it and smooth it into place.
- Position the quilt top over the batting and smooth it without stretching.
- Apply adhesive in sections, lifting and repositioning the layers as needed to remove wrinkles before the adhesive holds them together.
- Continue section by section, following the product directions, and avoid unnecessary handling after basting.
These steps reflect one maker’s tutorial rather than a guarantee for every adhesive or fabric. Avoid overspraying: excess adhesive can leave gummy residue on the work surface and quilting needle. For a visual walkthrough, see Quilty Love’s spray-basting tutorial.
3. Thread basting
Thread basting holds the layers with long, temporary hand stitches. It is often used for hand quilting because stitched layers can work better in a hoop than layers held by pins.

- With a needle and thread, make temporary stitches about 2 inches long through all three layers.
- Begin with horizontal and vertical lines through the center to divide the quilt into quadrants.
- Add diagonal basting lines in both directions, then fill the remaining surface with stitches about 3 to 4 inches apart.
- Work from the center toward the edges, smoothing the sandwich and keeping the layers aligned.
The stitch length and spacing are recommendations from the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors; adjust your approach to the quilt and your hand-quilting setup.

Which basting method should you use?
| Method | Useful when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Safety pins | You are machine quilting and want to remove the fasteners as you work. | Use rustproof pins and space them about 3 to 4 inches apart, as the cited guide recommends. |
| Spray adhesive | You are basting a smaller project such as a table runner or wall hanging. | Follow the adhesive label, work in sections, and avoid overspray. |
| Thread stitches | You are hand quilting, particularly when the quilt will be held in a hoop. | Allow time to stitch temporary lines across the surface; the cited guide recommends stitches about 2 inches long and spaced about 3 to 4 inches apart. |
These are selection cues, not fixed rules. The practical choice depends on the project’s size, whether pins or stitches will interfere with your quilting method, your comfort using adhesive, and the workspace you have available. A reader discussion at r/quilting names spray, pins, and large hand stitches as familiar options; it is informal discussion, not a survey of quilters.
