3 Ways to Learn Digital Art—and Which One Is Right for You

The best way to learn 2D digital art is to combine structured lessons, focused software tutorials, and small original projects with specific critique. Here is how to choose a route, app, equipment, and first exercise.

The three most effective ways to learn 2D digital art are: follow a structured course or class, use focused tutorials and official software documentation, and make small original projects while getting specific critique. None of these methods is complete on its own. The most reliable loop is:

  1. Structured lesson
  2. Focused exercise
  3. Original variation
  4. Finished mini-project
  5. Critique
  6. Revision

This guide focuses on digital drawing, digital painting, illustration, character art, environments, comics, and concept art. It also explains what equipment you actually need, which beginner software fits different situations, how to practice fundamentals instead of merely memorizing buttons, and how to save your work safely.

Table of Contents

Start by defining what you want to learn

“Digital art” is an umbrella term. Drawing a character in Procreate, painting an environment in Krita, designing a logo in Illustrator, modeling a 3D creature, editing a photograph, and creating generative artwork are different activities with different tools and learning paths.

  • Digital drawing and sketching
  • Digital painting
  • Character and environment illustration
  • Comics and concept art
  • Basic digital animation when it supports a drawing or painting workflow

Vector illustration, pixel art, 3D modeling, full animation production, photo compositing, and generative-art workflows require additional or different software and, in some cases, different fundamentals. There is overlap in observation, composition, color, and visual communication, but learning to paint in a raster program will not by itself teach 3D modeling or graphic-design layout.

Before choosing a learning route, answer four questions:

  • What do you want to make? Characters, landscapes, comics, portraits, abstract paintings, or something else?
  • What is your goal? A relaxing hobby, school work, a portfolio, or preparation for professional work?
  • What equipment do you already own? An iPad, a Windows computer, a Mac, an Android tablet, or a computer with a separate drawing tablet?
  • How much structure do you need? Do you want a syllabus and deadlines, or do you prefer to choose your own projects?

Your answers matter more than finding a universally “best” application. A program that is ideal for an iPad-based painter may be the wrong choice for someone who needs an Adobe workplace workflow or a free desktop application.

Do you need traditional drawing experience first?

No. You can learn traditional and digital drawing at the same time. However, moving from paper to a screen does not remove the need to learn visual fundamentals.

The transferable fundamentals include:

  • Observation and drawing from reference
  • Lines, shapes, and edges
  • Form and volume
  • Perspective
  • Gesture and anatomy for figure drawing
  • Value and light
  • Color
  • Composition
  • Visual storytelling

Digital art adds a second group of skills:

  • Stylus control and pressure response
  • Brush behavior and brush organization
  • Layers and layer groups
  • Masks, selections, and transformations
  • Clipping masks or alpha lock
  • Color profiles and export formats
  • File naming, organization, and backup

A beginner can learn both categories together. The important distinction is that software fluency is not the same as artistic progress. Knowing how to open a layer mask does not automatically improve proportion, form, lighting, or composition.

Adobe’s beginner drawing guidance emphasizes consistent practice, observation, drawing from life, studying other artists, and using reference. It also treats copying as a private observational exercise rather than something to present as your own work. That distinction is important: study a drawing to understand how it works, then make an independent variation and label studies honestly.

What equipment do you actually need?

The minimum setup is a compatible device, drawing or painting software, and—depending on the workflow—a stylus or drawing tablet. Wacom identifies these as the core components for getting started, but you do not need a premium studio setup to begin practicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setup Best for Trade-off
Screenless pen tablet A low-cost desktop setup using Krita, Photoshop, or another computer program Your hand draws on an opaque tablet while the image appears on a separate monitor
Pen display Artists who want to draw directly on the image Usually costs more and is less portable; it also needs a computer in many configurations
Standalone tablet Portable, self-contained drawing and painting Device, operating-system, app, storage, and stylus compatibility all matter

A screenless tablet is not inherently worse than a pen display. It changes the hand-eye workflow: the tablet surface is separate from the image. Some artists prefer that arrangement, while others want the direct-on-screen experience. Wacom’s comparison of pen tablets and pen displays describes this distinction as a workflow and preference decision rather than a universal quality ranking.

Do not make pressure-sensitivity numbers your main buying criterion. According to Wacom’s manufacturer guidance, beginners generally have enough sensitivity in entry-level devices, and most users have difficulty distinguishing between 4,096 and 8,192 pressure levels. Treat that as product guidance rather than independent testing, but the practical point is sound: reliable drivers, a comfortable active area, compatibility, and a surface you will actually use are more important than chasing a specification.

If you already have an iPad and compatible stylus, start there. If you have a computer but no tablet, you can begin with observation, construction, value studies, and even a mouse while deciding whether pen input is necessary. For regular pen-based painting, however, a compatible stylus, screenless tablet, pen display, or standalone tablet will generally make the workflow more natural.

Way 1: Follow a structured course or class

A structured course or class is usually the best starting point when you feel overwhelmed by the number of skills and resources available. It gives you a sequence, assignments, and a reason to move from one topic to the next instead of collecting disconnected videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a structured course teaches well

A good course can provide:

  • A logical progression from basic forms to more complex images
  • Deadlines or accountability
  • Exercises designed to expose specific weaknesses
  • Instructor or peer feedback
  • Finished projects suitable for review or a portfolio
  • A balance between artistic fundamentals and software operation

Look for a course that teaches more than menus and brush settings. A software-only course may show you how to create layers, select pixels, or adjust a brush while leaving you unable to judge proportion, form, values, light, color, or composition. Conversely, a traditional drawing course may not explain how to organize a layered document or export it correctly.

Examples of structured learning

The Coursera Digital Painting Specialization is an example of a multi-module route that combines digital painting techniques with artistic concepts and assignments. Its first module includes Photoshop setup, brushes, mixer brush, smudge, selections, masking, brushwork, and exercises, with videos, readings, and peer review.

Proko’s learning library combines foundational drawing courses, digital-painting instruction, assignments, discussion, and peer or professional feedback. Its listed digital-painting material addresses digital-specific workflows, while Drawing Basics and Perspective address foundations that transfer across software.

The official Procreate Beginners Series is a useful structured introduction for people using Procreate on iPad. Its four parts cover fundamentals, painting tools, editing tools, and actions and animation. It is an app-specific beginner curriculum, not a complete substitute for learning drawing fundamentals.

How to evaluate a course before committing

Before paying or investing several weeks, check for:

  • A visible syllabus and clear learning outcomes
  • Exercises rather than demonstrations alone
  • Finished projects, not only isolated tool tests
  • Examples of the instructor’s work and, where available, student work
  • A real feedback or critique process
  • Practice files where they are genuinely useful
  • Software and version information
  • A realistic workload
  • A clear division between fundamentals and application-specific technique

Course duration is not mastery time. A course may list a 27-hour workload or a four-hour module, but that describes content or estimated study time—not the time required to become proficient. Course directories such as Class Central can help compare topics, ratings, estimated workloads, and platforms, but catalog information is a selection aid, not proof that a course is the best choice for every learner.

Who should choose this route?

A structured course or class is especially useful for:

  • Complete beginners who do not know what to study first
  • People who have tried random tutorials and lack a sequence
  • Traditional artists making a guided transition to digital tools
  • Learners pursuing a portfolio or career direction
  • Anyone who benefits from deadlines, assignments, or a teacher

The main weakness—and the fix

Courses can create the illusion of progress. Completing a lesson while copying the instructor proves that you followed instructions; it does not prove that you can apply the idea independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After every course section, make an original variation. Change the subject, pose, lighting, color scheme, or composition. After every small group of lessons, complete a mini-project without following along. That is where information begins turning into a usable skill.

Way 2: Use guided tutorials and official documentation

Tutorials and documentation are the most efficient route when you need to learn one application or solve one defined problem. They are also a low-cost way to begin, especially when you use official resources.

When tutorials are the right tool

Use a focused tutorial to:

  • Learn a new application’s interface
  • Understand layers, masks, selections, or transformations
  • Reproduce a specific workflow
  • Fix a technical problem
  • Learn how a brush engine or color tool behaves
  • Fill a gap in a broader fundamentals curriculum

Prefer first-party documentation for interface instructions. Menu names, shortcuts, supported devices, and feature locations change. A popular video from several years ago may still teach a valid artistic principle but show controls that no longer match your installation.

Official learning paths by application

Procreate: a direct iPad workflow

Best fit: An iPad user who wants to draw directly on the screen with a touch-and-stylus workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official Procreate Beginners Series is divided into four parts:

Part Video duration Estimated lesson time Coverage
Fundamentals 16 minutes 30–45 minutes Interface, gestures, color, Paint, Smudge, Erase, and layers
Painting Tools 18 minutes 45–60 minutes QuickShape, ColorDrop, Alpha Lock, blend modes, and editing tools
Editing Tools 19 minutes 45–60 minutes Selection, Transform, Adjustments, Actions, and clipping masks
Actions & Animations 16 minutes 30–45 minutes Imported images, drawing guides, symmetry, and frame-by-frame animation

The videos total 69 minutes, while the listed estimated lesson time is approximately two and a half to three and a half hours. Those estimates describe lessons, not artistic competence. Use the Procreate Handbook alongside the series when you need a feature reference.

Krita: free, open-source desktop painting

Best fit: A desktop user seeking a free, open-source painting program with a detailed manual and a traditional computer-and-tablet workflow.

Version-sensitive information should always be checked before installation. The cited project information identifies Krita 5.3.2.1 as released on June 2, 2026 and suitable for productive work, while Krita 6.0.2.1 is described by the project as more experimental because of larger Qt-related changes. The project’s homepage and release notice should be treated as the current authority; the version details here were checked against the supplied sources on August 9, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a basic first exercise, Krita’s starting guide recommends an RGB, 8-bit-per-channel document. A practical sequence is:

  1. Create a new document using RGB and 8-bit settings for a basic painting exercise.
  2. Select the freehand brush tool.
  3. Open Brush Presets with F6.
  4. Open the Brush Editor with F5.
  5. Create separate layers for sketch, color, and details.
  6. Save the working document in Krita’s native .kra format.
  7. Export a flattened PNG only when you need to share or publish the image.

Krita’s layers and masks documentation explains why separate layers are useful: individual elements can be recolored, edited, moved, or deleted without changing the rest of the artwork.

Adobe Fresco: touch and stylus work on supported devices

Best fit: Someone who wants a touch-and-stylus drawing workflow on supported iPhone, iPad, or Windows devices.

Fresco includes in-app learning:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Learn.
  2. Tap the first thumbnail for the quick tour.
  3. Alternatively, open a working document, tap the Help icon, and choose Take the tour.
  4. From the Learn screen, select a hands-on tutorial.

These paths are documented in Adobe’s Fresco in-app learning guide. Check Adobe’s current system-requirements page before installing. The cited June 2026 information lists iPad version 7.4 and platform-specific requirements, and feature support differs among iPad, iPhone, and Windows. Do not assume that a feature shown in one device tutorial exists in exactly the same form on another platform; Adobe’s platform feature-support page is the safer reference.

Photoshop: useful when Adobe is part of your destination

Best fit: A learner whose school, workplace, course, or intended workflow uses Adobe’s ecosystem.

Adobe’s Photoshop beginner tutorials cover interface basics and workflows involving layers, masking, selections, compositing, and projects. Photoshop is capable of digital painting, but it is also widely used for image editing and compositing, so select lessons that match the kind of art you want to make.

  1. Watch only enough to understand the next action. Do not treat a long playlist as a task to finish passively.
  2. Pause and recreate the step from memory. This reveals whether you understood the process.
  3. Make a variation. Use a different subject, color scheme, brush, pose, or composition.
  4. Write down one problem. For example: “I cannot keep the light direction consistent.”
  5. Apply the technique in a small original project.
  6. Do not collect another tutorial until you have used the current technique.

A tutorial should produce an artifact. If it produces only viewing time and a folder of bookmarked videos, it has not yet become practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limitation of tutorials

Tutorials are often fragmented. You can learn dozens of shortcuts and still struggle with observation, proportion, form, value, or composition. Pair software tutorials with studies from life, simple objects, perspective exercises, gesture drawing, value exercises, and original projects.

Way 3: Learn through projects, deliberate practice, and critique

Project-based learning is where you develop the ability to make decisions without step-by-step instructions. It teaches finishing, problem-solving, personal taste, and workflow choices while producing evidence of what you can actually do.

Choose projects that reveal one weakness

A good beginner project is narrow enough to finish and specific enough to diagnose a problem. Try:

  • Painting one object using only three values
  • Drawing the same object from five different angles
  • Creating a character sheet with three poses
  • Repainting a reference with a different lighting scheme
  • Making a small environment thumbnail using one-point or two-point perspective
  • Recreating one of your traditional sketches digitally and comparing the workflows
  • Designing a small illustration with one focal point and a limited palette

Do not begin with an enormous multi-character scene if you have never completed a small study. A short finished project teaches more about planning and correction than an ambitious canvas abandoned halfway through.

A repeatable practice loop

  1. Choose one skill. Examples include edges, perspective, values, gesture, color temperature, or composition.
  2. Choose a reference. Use life observation, your own photographs, licensed material, or a clearly attributed study source.
  3. Set a constraint. Limit the exercise to one object, one figure, one light source, one palette, or one composition.
  4. Make a first attempt without over-polishing. Finish the idea quickly enough that you can still identify the structural problem.
  5. Inspect the image. Flip the canvas, view it as a thumbnail, and check it in grayscale.
  6. Ask for specific critique. A question such as “Is the light direction clear?” is more useful than “Is this good?”
  7. Revise one or two issues. Do not change everything at once.
  8. Save the before-and-after versions. This creates a record of what feedback changed.
  9. Record the next weakness to practice.

Proko’s course model explicitly pairs lessons with assignments and feedback from peers or professionals. A 2025 study of visual peer feedback in a Swedish sixth-grade visual-arts setting also reported that participants generally found the process useful and made visual revisions, including redrawing, recoloring, and composition changes. That study supports including critique in a learning loop, but it was a school-based context—not proof that one critique format is optimal for every adult digital artist.

How to request useful critique

Ask a teacher, peer group, or critique community for two or three specific observations:

  • What reads first?
  • Is the focal point clear?
  • Does the perspective hold?
  • Is the value structure readable in grayscale?
  • Does the pose communicate the intended action?
  • Where does the eye get stuck?
  • Which edge should be sharper or softer?
  • What single change would improve the image most?

A moderated critique group or instructor is usually more useful than raw social-media engagement. Likes can indicate that an image attracted attention, but they do not tell you whether the perspective is accurate, the values are organized, or the story is clear. Avoid groups that offer only vague praise or personal attacks.

Use copying as study, not as a substitute for understanding

Copying a masterwork or another artist’s image can be a valuable private observational exercise. While studying, ask why the artist placed an edge there, simplified a shape, grouped values, or chose a particular color. Then close the reference and create a new subject or variation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not trace or replicate another artist’s finished work and present it as an original. If you share a study, identify it as a study and credit the source where appropriate. Adobe’s guidance on learning to draw makes the same distinction between learning through emulation and claiming someone else’s work.

Choose one app for your first learning block

Do not switch between Procreate, Krita, Fresco, and Photoshop every few days. Choose one program for the next 10 to 20 completed exercises, or for a clearly defined course. Change only when the current software blocks the actual goal—not because another application has a more attractive brush video.

Your situation Logical starting point Why
You use an iPad and want to draw directly on the screen Procreate Its official beginner curriculum is designed specifically around Procreate on iPad
You use a desktop and want free painting software Krita It is presented by its project as free and open source and has extensive documentation
You want touch-and-stylus work across supported Apple and Windows devices Adobe Fresco Its learning tools and feature support are organized around supported platforms
Your course, school, or workplace uses Adobe Photoshop Learning its layer, mask, selection, and compositing workflow may transfer directly to that environment
You are unsure what to buy Use existing equipment first Practice reveals whether your real limitation is portability, active area, screen size, latency, or compatibility

There is no universal best app. Genre, device, budget, and destination determine suitability. Someone who wants character art should prioritize gesture, anatomy, form, and light. Someone who wants concept art should prioritize perspective, value, composition, environment studies, and thumbnails. Someone who wants vector design needs a vector program and separate design fundamentals; raster-painting advice will not cover the whole workflow. Someone who wants 3D art needs a separate curriculum for modeling, materials, lighting, and rendering.

A practical first-week plan

This is an editorial starter plan, not a guaranteed timetable for mastery. Adjust the session length to your schedule, but complete each deliverable before moving on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Session 1: Set up one application

  • Install or open one program.
  • Complete its official orientation or beginner lesson.
  • Test the stylus, tablet, undo, zoom, brush size, and color picker.
  • Create a file and save it in the application’s native format.

If you use Procreate, begin with the official Beginners Series. If you use Fresco, open Learn from the Home screen or choose Help > Take the tour inside a document. If you use Krita, create an RGB, 8-bit document, open Brush Presets with F6, and use the freehand brush. If you use Photoshop, begin with Adobe’s beginner tutorials and practice saving a layered document.

Session 2: Practice control

Fill a page with straight lines, curves, ellipses, boxes, simple shapes, and strokes at different pressures. The goal is not attractive art. It is to learn how your hand, stylus, brush, and zoom level interact.

Session 3: Study a simple object

Draw a cup, shoe, plant, tool, or other object from life. Reduce it to simple forms before adding details. Focus on proportion, contour, and volume rather than a decorative brush.

Session 4: Practice values or color

Paint the same object using three or five values, or use a limited color palette. Check the image in grayscale and ask whether the light direction is clear. This teaches more about painting structure than trying ten new brushes.

Session 5: Make a small original illustration

Combine the week’s skills into one finished image. Keep the subject small: one object, one character bust, or one simple environment thumbnail. Use layers for sketch, color, and details where your software supports them.

Session 6: Get critique

Show the image to a teacher, peer, or moderated group. Ask two specific questions, such as whether the focal point is clear and whether the values separate the subject from the background. Save the original before making changes.

Session 7: Revise, export, and back up

Make one or two revisions based on the feedback. Save the layered native file, export a separate PNG or JPEG for sharing, and place a backup in a separate location. Write down the next weakness you noticed.

Save the work you are learning from

File safety is part of a digital-art workflow. In-app saving, autosave, and cloud synchronization are useful, but none should be treated as a complete backup strategy.

Krita

  • Save the editable master as a native .kra file.
  • Krita’s default autosave interval is 15 minutes, but autosave does not replace deliberate saving.
  • If Krita crashes, restart it and look for restoration prompts.
  • Check backup and autosave files if the document does not reopen normally.
  • For a damaged .kra, make a copy, rename the copy to .zip, and look for mergedimage.png to recover a flattened reference image.

See Krita’s autosave documentation and file-recovery FAQ for the details of its recovery process.

Procreate

Procreate saves artwork locally on the iPad. That internal saving is not the same as an external backup. The official procedure is:

  1. Open the Gallery.
  2. Tap Select.
  3. Select canvases or stacks.
  4. Tap Share.
  5. Choose the Procreate format.
  6. Save it to Files or another secure location.

Procreate recommends backing up artwork before updating the app or iPadOS. Keep the editable Procreate-format file, not only an exported image.

Photoshop

Preserve the layered native document and export a separate flattened copy for sharing. Adobe’s current saving guidance explains that native files preserve layers and settings, while a copy can be flattened without changing the original. Use File > Save to preserve the current document and File > Save As to create a separately named version. Adobe also documents file-recovery settings and crash recovery.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Watching instead of practicing

Problem: You finish hours of videos but cannot make anything without following along.

Recovery: Make an original variation after every tutorial and a finished mini-project after every learning block.

App-hopping

Problem: You repeatedly change applications and spend more time configuring brushes than drawing.

Recovery: Commit to one app for 10 to 20 completed exercises. Change only for a concrete reason such as compatibility, portability, or a missing workflow.

Buying equipment too early

Problem: You assume an expensive display, premium brush pack, or higher pressure-sensitivity number will fix weak drawing skills.

Recovery: Start with equipment you already own or an entry-level compatible setup. Upgrade only after identifying a specific limitation: insufficient active area, poor portability, uncomfortable viewing angle, latency, or software incompatibility.

Copying without understanding

Problem: You replicate a finished image and mistake resemblance for understanding.

Recovery: Use references for observation, close the reference, and make a new variation. Share studies honestly and never present another artist’s work as your own.

Learning software instead of art

Problem: You know layers, masks, and brushes but struggle with proportion, form, light, or composition.

Never finishing

Problem: You start ambitious images, constantly repaint them, and have nothing to review.

Recovery: Set a small brief, limit the canvas or time, and finish a deliberately modest image. Finished work creates a feedback point; an endlessly revised canvas often hides the actual weakness.

Treating social-media likes as critique

Problem: You use engagement numbers to decide whether an image is successful.

Recovery: Ask targeted questions of a person or group capable of discussing perspective, values, composition, edges, anatomy, or storytelling.

Which learning route should you choose?

Reader situation Best starting route Reason
Complete beginner Structured course plus small projects Provides sequence and reduces uncertainty
Limited budget Official free tutorials, Krita, and project practice Builds skill before requiring substantial spending
Traditional artist moving digital Software tutorials plus digital redraws of familiar subjects Separates medium-specific problems from drawing problems
Portfolio-focused learner Projects with critique and defined briefs Produces finished, reviewable work
Need to learn one app for work Official documentation and task-specific tutorials Targets the required workflow efficiently
Easily distracted by tools One app, one brush set, one defined project Limits setup paralysis
Character-art goal Gesture, anatomy, form, and light fundamentals plus character projects Software alone will not solve construction problems
Concept-art goal Perspective, value, composition, environment studies, and thumbnails Prioritizes visual design and readable ideas

The strongest approach combines all three

These are not competing identities. A beginner might take a structured fundamentals course, use official Krita or Procreate documentation whenever a tool is confusing, and complete one small project each week for critique. A working artist might reverse the emphasis: start with a client-like project, consult documentation only when blocked, and take a targeted class to fix a recurring weakness.

The key is to connect each resource to an action:

Learn one principle or tool → practice it with a constraint → use it in an original image → request specific feedback → revise and save the result.

That loop teaches both how the software works and how to make decisions inside it. It also gives you a safe, repeatable way to begin with the equipment you already have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn digital art without a drawing tablet?

Yes. You can begin with paper-based observation and drawing studies, or use a mouse for basic computer work. For regular pen-based painting, a compatible stylus, screenless tablet, pen display, or standalone tablet is usually more natural. Start with the equipment you already have and upgrade only when you can identify a specific limitation.

Is Procreate better than Krita?

Neither is universally better. Procreate is a logical fit for an iPad user who wants to draw directly on the screen. Krita is a strong fit for a desktop user seeking free, open-source painting software. Choose based on your device, budget, workflow, and destination rather than a general ranking.

Do I need to learn traditional drawing before digital art?

No. You can learn both at the same time. Digital tools add layers, masks, brushes, selections, and export concerns, but they do not replace observation, form, perspective, value, color, composition, gesture, or anatomy practice.

How long does digital art take to learn?

There is no reliable fixed timeline. Course runtimes and lesson estimates measure content, not mastery. Progress depends on the skills you practice, the quality of feedback, your consistency, and the complexity of the work you want to make. Track completed exercises and revisions rather than hours watched.

Should I start with line art or painting?

Start with the kind of image you want to make, but practice the underlying fundamentals. Line exercises build control and shape awareness; value studies build form and light; simple projects can combine both. You do not need to master one medium completely before trying the other.

Are free tutorials enough to learn digital art?

Free tutorials can teach software basics and many individual techniques. They are less reliable as a complete curriculum because they may be fragmented. Combine a carefully chosen set of official tutorials with fundamentals practice, original projects, and specific critique. A paid course is most valuable when it adds sequence, accountability, assignments, or feedback.

How do I practice if I do not know what to draw?

Choose a narrow exercise with a constraint: one object in three values, the same object from five angles, a three-pose character sheet, or a small perspective thumbnail. Use life observation, your own photographs, licensed references, or clearly attributed study material.

How do I use reference images safely?

Use your own photographs, life observation, licensed material, or references you have permission to use. A private copy can be an observational study, but do not present a traced or replicated artwork as original. If you share a study, label it as a study and credit the source where appropriate.

What file format should I save?

Keep an editable native file as your master: for example, a Krita .kra document or a Procreate-format file. In Photoshop, preserve the layered native document. Export a separate flattened PNG or JPEG for sharing. In-app saving and autosave are not substitutes for an external backup.

How do I get useful feedback?

Ask one teacher, peer, or moderated critique group two or three specific questions. Try asking whether the focal point is clear, whether the perspective holds, whether the values read in grayscale, or what single change would improve the image most. Save the before-and-after versions so you can see what the critique changed.

The Bottom Line

Start with one application, one learning route, and one small project. Use a structured course for sequence, official tutorials for software skills, and deliberate projects with critique for independent ability. Save the layered original, back it up externally, and let each finished exercise identify the next thing to practice.
